That's like me making a movie for kids to wanna learn history and show a bunch of dead people. "Wanna know what happened to them and when? Look up the Vietnam War." Like Doug says here, the moral falls flat because the mc is already a bookworm from starters, his whole life is what he reads in books. I get that it's more about the things book teach you, such as courage, but if he was already a nerdy kid he would have read those books and learnt that lesson ANYWAY. The reason why Neverending Story works here and Pagemaster doesnt is that the main kid was an average kid, so that anyone could relate to him, I cant relate to this stuck up statistics kid. But even besides that, the whole movie is boring as hell, I distinctly remember changing the channel whenever they aired this, and it's not that the plot is boring, it has a lot of off colors, it's paced like a turtle and it's a drag to watch, not even the climax picks up the pace a little. It's a snoozefest.

Even the scene where a rapid dog came out of SH hounds of the baskervilles, it's one of the best sherlock novels, sure the movie didn't expand on the fictional novel characters that much, maybe it's best they shouldn't have, if kids got interested in them from the scenes of the movie, they would want to read the books to learn more

Like others have pointed out, I think the reason they gloss over a lot of plot elements is to get people interested in finding out the context behind those scenes. They show the most exciting stuff to make you wonder what led to it. And before anyone says that's a terrible approach, that's literally what movie trailers and TV show ads are for. They show you specific scenes to get you hyped up. In fact, sometimes they'll even show clips that aren't in the final product to mislead the audience and catch them by surprise when they see how the film actually plays out. And if you read some of the comments, you'll notice a lot of people read these books because the film didn't spoil those stories for them but made them look exciting by showing some of the more exciting moments/plot points. I just notice quite a few people saying that just showing one plot point without context isn't a valid way to get people interested in something when, again, that's literally what ads do. Another apt comparison, imagine if the plot summary on the back of a book told you every single plot point. What's the point in even reading it when you know exactly what happens at the end? You see where I'm coming from? Before you say it makes no sense for a film to take that approach, keep in mind this isn't an adaptation of a book. It's an original film that uses those other books are a basis for the worlds the main lead has to go through. If this was an adaptation of all three of those stories, sure, then the lack of context would be a valid complaint, but again, it's not.

actually, by only teasing these books and characters, it encourages you to go out and read more about them. It's actually explained well by the page master himself. Explore the worlds within these books and you may find a connection to reading you never thought you could have. Pagemaster is not a guilty pleasure of mine, it's just a pleasure. It's dark, adventurous, goofy, and fantastical. Except for every scene before and after the library... those are just terrible

@supermariofan034 жыл бұрын
How does that excuse the characters based on said novels being underdeveloped? Be a movie first, then be an inspiration for kids to read.
@TheRoloSound4 жыл бұрын
@@supermariofan03 I don't know, I would be inclined to agree with you, but the overwhelming amount of comments referring to how much people enjoyed this movie as a kid (and even now) kind of proves to me that this movie did exactly what it intended to do. There are movies with incredibly diverse and fleshed out characters, there are visually interesting movies, and some movies that do both wonderfully (all having the ability to carry a message while being entertaining). This movie did a fair job showing the base traits of characters from various novels, especially with the short amount of time each character was on screen. At the same time, the animation was breathtaking and really sucked you into the genres being portrayed. Putting too much focus on fleshing out these characters we only really get a glimpse at would defeat the purpose of the film. I wouldn't go so far to say this movie is a masterpiece, but it is fascinating if nothing else, especially for a 90's film about reading. It holds a special place in my childhood as well as the childhoods of many others. Trying to put it under the microscope of (fancy voice) 'Serious Critique' shows (in my opinion) a lack of understanding for what this movie is trying (and succeeds) to be: a film to convince children, through exciting/beautiful visuals and a glimpse into various novels, that exploring fiction is a worthwhile endeavor.
@supermariofan034 жыл бұрын
TheRoloSound Look if you like this movie, more power to you. But considering that you admitted the movie didn’t flesh out these characters, it contradicts your point of the movie trying to get the kids to read these literature novels. Why not, oh I don’t know, have these characters along with Culkin and the books on this grand epic journey?! Add some intriguing dialogue moments to further flesh them out that will most definitely have kids be like “Wow. I want to read Jekyll and Hyde. I want to read Moby Dick.” Having these characters appear for only a few minutes and just get them the fuck out would only drive kids further away from said novels and just go back to more grinding on Final Fantasy VI. Oh and by the way, you might want to do your research. The movie “succeeded”? That’s not what the overall box office results and critic reviews tell me.
@TheRoloSound4 жыл бұрын
@@supermariofan03 My point is that the movie has no need to "flesh out" the characters from these novels. If you watched the movie, then you would know that these characters are (in a way) confined to their stories. Bringing them along the journey defeats the premise. The point is not to follow these characters through the story. The point is to have Culkin and the books (as well as the audience) catch a glimpse of those characters within their respective stories. It is meant as a metaphor: Culkin gets lost in the library and begins skimming through random books based on which section of the library he is in. The number of people in the comments who attribute either their beginning or continued interest in reading fiction to this movie contradicts the notion that this movie had no effect. Finally, I guess I need to address the last thing you said. I never once said that this movie did well at the box office, nor did I claim that critics loved it. I said that the movie succeeded in what it was trying to accomplish. In clearer terms, "The final product matches the filmmaker's vision for it." This movie introduced Jekyll and Hyde, Moby Dick, and Treasure Island to me as a kid, which is more than I can say for many of the adults in my life at that age, and did it in an easy-to-digest, colorful, and creative way. Again, this movie has its flaws. It isn't a critically great movie, but none of that even matters. What matters is that the filmmaker's vision reached the audience it was intended for. Otherwise, we wouldn't be having this discussion. It was fun visiting a comment thread I started 3 years ago, but I think I may have said all I can from my perspective. It was nice meeting you.

Well, what I got out of it was the atmosphere. It conveyed the horror of the horror part really well and the adventure of the adventure part well too. It inspired me to go and read the books from those sections and discover for myself why they were such great literary classics. I actually like how it only vaguely glossed over each individual book from those sections, and told more with the animation than it did with the dialogue and story telling, because they would say what the book was and give you a snippet of story from it to get you hooked in sometimes an entirely visual manor. But the images that it gave me were striking enough to stay in my imagination after the film was over. The fantasy section however, I feel was completely wasted. As far as dumb 90's movies go, this ain't the worst, and the visuals and atmosphere (mostly) are its main draw.

Aside from the Fantasy section scene, I loved this movie as a kid! It actually made me read Moby Dick and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde because I was curious about their stories. I get that it's not for everyone, but it introduced me to new kinds of stories that I wouldn't have read as a kid (and introduced me to my love of horror - the genre, not the book).

Pagemaster was one of my fave movies as a kid. I actually remembered it so much as an adult that I was able to find it again as a college kid and find it online. And, maybe it was my NOSTALGIA at play but I enjoyed it just as much. :)

Not only do I remember The Pagemaster it is one of my all time favorite movies as a kid. My favorite character had to be Horror. I'd always mimic that scene where he explains the jist of how his books work. My mom would always yell at me to keep it down when I did the blood curdling scream he does right before he holds up a flower to signify he was murdered in a horror slasher book.

I agree with many others. I loved this movie because I am a bookworm. The literary cameos remind me of the series, Wishbone where they give you a bit of the story so you can read it for yourself. That said the review is hilarious and is one of my favorites. I actually have a beautifully illustrated novelization of this movie. "The only way he could have gotten that information by reading books!" True, but as the book I am reading now The Marvelous Adventures of Gwendolyn Gray says there is a difference between books and stories. Rich probably only read Non-Fiction books and journals that confirmed his statistics and fears.

it's funny cause from a critical standpoint i perfectly understand how many failures this movie has and yet it was one of my favorite movies as a kid. i don't know why but i watched it all the time and the jekyll and hyde scene was always my favorite version of it as a kid. still don't know why but i've just always loved this movie

I think the main issue of this movie is the final message, like Richard took his helmet off and ride this very dangerous ramp, with NO ONE around, and clearly it is show as a positive thing by the movie, and I was like, no, not at all, it's a very dangerous thing to do, please don't do that, wear a protection and don't do that kind of stuff alone ! And even the parents, like, the father is disappointed because his son is scared of the high, yeah, that kind of things can happen, it's called a phobia, go see a therapist, don't force your son to climb that ladder and just complain after, like, what kind of father are you ? Also, I find it ood that Richard knows how to ride a bike, I mean, if he's scared of just climbing a ladder, how did he learn to ride a bike, which is implying a lot, or at least some, falls. I mean, a lot of people gets hurt, or even die while using a bike, so why isn't he's scared ? Then another thing, when richard enter the librairy, he's totally soaked, and when he recover his body, he's all dry, but the movie clearly shows that his body was waiting for him (his soul ?) all along. So, we can deduce that some times have passed, like, two hours, maybe three. And before he gets home, there's this little scene where we can see the mother who becomes worried like "maybe we should call the police", hum, yeah maybe, like you send your son to get some nails, and severals hours have passed and he's still not there, well, maybe you should have looked for him a fucking hour ago ?! I don't know, calling the shop, getting outside to see if someone has seen him ? And if you already have done all that, you shouldn't even ask about calling, it should be obvious !

You know, thinking about it this morning, something occurred to me. Did Doctor Jekyll KNOW he was drinking the potion that turns him into Mr. Hyde? I mean, really think about it. He poured it into extremely fancy glasses and even offered it to Adventure without a second thought. Doctor Jekyll would never share that potion willingly with anyone else. Was this at the point in the story of Jekyll and Hyde where Jekyll has become aware Hyde is another personality and activity avoiding taking the potion willingly? Was Jekyll tricked in that scene by Hyde, who secretly swapped one of Jekyll's drinks with the potion to ensure he could get out again. Jekyll seems genuinely scared when he screams as the potion starts taking effect, so maybe he genuinely wasn't aware what he'd poured into those glasses was the potion
