Even though Patch Adams hated the movie, he did say in an interview that Robin Williams was quite possibly the only person who could’ve portrayed him. Now that makes me think that Adams didn’t hate per se the way Williams portrayed him but more so the direction that the filmmakers went. He had much respect for Robin Williams and was heartbroken when he heard of his death.

BTW, for those interested, the real practices of the real life Hunter 'Patch' Adams are much more complex than just 'Laughter's the best medicine'. While laughter and clowning are an important part, it's a more general belief in the idea that the emotional and spiritual wellbeing of a patient AND their family, is just as important as the patient's physical wellbeing. He advocates free healthcare, holistic care, forming emotional connections with one's patients, and yes, he does arrange trips of 'clown care' troupes to visit overseas hospitals. He's a pretty fascinating guy!

He is indeed a really fascinating man and somebody who deserves a much better film made about him, one that actually explains his methods and work in detail. He's done some great stuff for a lot of people, and he understands that psychology plays a huge part in the overall health of a person. Cutting back stress, encouraging laughter and happiness, holistic healthcare and other methods are all things he advocates, while still agreeing with common sense things like sterile conditions, privacy and drug treatments. This movie made the guy look like he was high on crack or something. It also made Patch seem like an uneducated scam artist, which is not true at all. He does a great deal of charity work, and he's an educated doctor who's gone through a lot of work and training to get to where he is. I could see a biographical miniseries about him being quite successful, provided that it actually portrayed him in an accurate way and didn't just make him look like a tool.

Apparently a woman getting molested and then murdered after finally falling in love sounded more sad than a real man getting murdered in a murder- suicide so they went with that! That's just sick! This movie has just discredited the real fact that a man was killed just for wanting to help people! Not only that, but the fact that they changed his gender, changed his backstory, and made him into a petty love interest makes me want to vomit. I can't believe that there are people who would do this out there, and quite frankly I'm saddened that these people exist. But hey, a fictional woman who was molested and later murdered is much more impactful than a man who tried to help people that was tragically shot to death by a patient! Whoever thought that was a good idea has a certain place in Hell waiting for them.

The worst part of this film is that it makes the other doctors seem uncaring and emotionless just to make Patch look good in comparison to them. And the fact that the movie expects us to be on Patch's side just because he's the main character even though he steals from a hospital, acts like an idiot and does nothing to help or cure the patients is truly stupid. No wonder the real Patch Adams hated this because the film basically shit all over his life's work and made him look like a total buffoon. He actually created new forms of medicine but the fictional character in this film that was supposedly based on him did nothing but wear a red nose and act like a clown as if that would supposedly cure the ill. It was the film's crappy attempt to shoehorn a bullshit "laughter is the best medicine" message in. Not to mention the fact that he makes fun of a catatonic guy on top of all that. IMO this is one of Robin Williams's worst films. Mrs Doubtfire and Jack were both far better than this. As was Williams voicing the Genie in Aladdin.

You know, I like to call his movie and Robin Williams' character Jack Adams, not because of the movie Jack, but because the character thinks acting like a total jackass to try and make patients laugh is the only way to emotionally interact with patients. Also, Jack Adams sounds close to jackass, so Jack Adams is what this movie should be called. I only refer to the real Patch Adams as Patch Adams.

The main problem is similar to some bad episodes of children's cartoons, and it's a common writing fuck-up: Protagonist-Centered morality. It's more like "I'm Perfect, and it's the World needs to change" when the writing should be closer to "I need to be better." It's annoying and insulting to have a written work tell it's better-minded audience that this us what's right.
@DonnaBrooks
@DonnaBrooks 5 жыл бұрын
@@V4Now Displaying poor bedside manner is one thing. Portraying doctors as villains who think they are better than their patients, and portraying actual medical knowledge as somehow inferior to just making people laugh is UNFAIR, inaccurate, and dangerous, akin to advocating relying on prayer or positive thinking to cure people instead of realizing that sometimes people DO need antibiotics or surgery or other treatments used in allopathic medicine. Treating people holistically is what is needed, and based on the comments here, it seems that was the real Patch Adams' message and M.O. Also, there's a difference between poor bedside manner and not making decisions emotionally. It's why doctors don't treat themselves or their families.

You know... This review made me think of my late uncle, who was a pediatric oncologist. We lost him to the disease he fought his entire life. I didn't know him too well because he lived in a different country. I wish I could have been closer to him. His death destroyed my family. My dad is still heartbroken. He told me my uncle's number one rule was, "The kids are in charge." He went with a girl he was treating to her school to help her give a speech because she was scared. She recovered and followed in the footsteps of the man who saved her life. He attended her graduation. He was a gentle, good, God-fearing man, and the world is less bright without him. Rest in peace, Oom Johannie.

So a little backstory: I'm almost 40, and I was born with Spinal Bifida, causing MANY physical issues that have been handled with just about 70ish surgeries over my lifetime. I've had more doctors than I can count, but 2 docs stand out still . A Pediatric urological surgeon and a neurosurgeon, and they were polar opposites. The first one was my doc when I was about 4-8, not only was he a brilliant surgeon but he always made me laugh. He'd run by my room and chuck wet paper towels at my bed, or randomly come into my room with a syringe behind his back full of water to squirt me. I had a small water gun under my pillow to fight back. That man's skill brought me through some of the worst surgeries I had as a kid, and his humor helped me laugh through it all. The second was my doc through my mid teens and mid-late twenties. He was always very direct and stoic, but also a brilliant surgeon. However, I was an extremely tough patient to fix. We did the same surgery to my spinal chord 6 times. The 4th my spinal chord was permanently damaged following the S2/S3 neural pathways, meaning I lost most of the feeling bellow the knee, back thigh, and rear. Making using my prosthetic impossible and my leg unable to support me un aided. When he found out he came into my room to apologize, He had tears in his eyes when he did it. All this to say, both types of doctors can be extremely effective, in the right circumstance.

Nicole Lee Being emotionally involved isn’t the same as fucking. Don’t get me wrong, I hated this movie but my best doctors are emotionally involved with me. They actually care about me as a person, not just a patient. It is difficult for doctors to do that because dealing with so much pain and suffering makes many people burn out unless they shut down their emotions. And the medical system, especially our for profit system encourages doctors to not treat patients like people. But the best doctors can do it, they are the ones who have a true calling and it’s been my privilege to have a couple like that.

This is one of my favorite NC episodes ever and as someone who worked as a clown that volunteered at hospitals. This movie makes Patch look like an incompetent jackass which he's not, he's an incredible human being I had the pleasure to meet. And it used to just be a collection of traits, and used to just be them getting sweet and gentle when they get close to someone. Than it became a trope, and even further down the line it completely changed from what it was and into just treating the one you like with coldness. Also with writers writing characters to be tsundere, to fit into that archetype, that trope, that it just becomes annoying and clichéd. Also some Anime just make it flat out violent and abusive. There is a difference between being hot-headed and abrasive, and being a flat-out abusive b*tch. The problem with how it was done in American movies was that it was done to make up for the depiction of woman in the previous decade. Thus was an overdone trope in order to overcompensate for past wrongs. It also doesn't give them likable aspects, thus the "Thaw your Icy Heart" part that makes Tsunderes cute or likable simply doesn't occur. Making them just plain unlikable.

The fact that they changed Patch's friend (a real person) to a woman who was a victim of csa so that they could basically use her as a plot device to not only try to force a romance, but also try to go 'oh what a swell guy Patch is' as well as to make us feel bad for HIM when she's killed is absolutely scummy. I'd be beyond pissed if someone changed my deceased friend just so they could force a pointless romance that didn't happen

While I still enjoy Robin Williams' performance in this film, I understand Nostalgia Critic's willingness and boldness to focus on the gross inaccuracies portrayed in what was supposed to be the story of Hunter Adams' hard work and well thought out message rather than an over-simplified comic version. Honestly, Even Williams himself, bless him, might have shared these feelings to an extent when working on the film. You never truly know what's going through an actor's mind in those moments. To be fair, there is a huge difference between the set of challenges involved in playing a character vs an actual person.

I wouldn’t say his demons got the better of him. He had Parkinson’s, and some called Lewy Body Disease, and was most likely suffering horribly from the symptoms. It’s a LITTLE like CHRIS BENOIT. He did do something unforgivable, but it was due to his brain basically turning to jelly from concussions. Chris JERICHO publicly stated that Benoit was a devoted family man, so he had a hard time accepting what happened, b/c it was at COMPLETE ODDS with his personality. It’s just PURE TRAGEDY. Also, can you IMAGINE how incredibly DEPRESSING it would be to see his deterioration? I’m sure, like Ali did, he would carry on for years, Ali was a boxer who kept fighting long after he should’ve stopped, whereas with Williams, we would’ve had to see him onstage every so often. When you think of how brilliantly manic he was, it would be INCREDIBLY DEPRESSING.

Robin Williams DID have a lot of personal problems, but I think it mostly comes down to this: ANYBODY who had a mind that worked THAT FAST was always going to be frustrated by the world around him, but b/c it couldn’t keep up. From what I understand, so much of his troubles seemed to be caused by the fact that the world around him was meaner and darker than it should’ve been. When you read about his whole experience /w Disney about how Aladdin was promoted, your heart breaks for sweet he really was.

One thing I wasn’t aware of: Williams had been diagnosed with PARKINSON’S before his suicide, and that almost certainly contributed to his death. And when you think about how particularly awful it would’ve been to see him degenerate, maybe he did us ALL a favor. It was bad enough when Muhammad Ali started to show symptoms, but with Williams, with his manic style of comedy, it would’ve been SO MUCH WORSE. My stepdad is going through this now, and it can be truly heartbreaking.

Honestly, even if I had no idea who Patch Adams was, I think I'd still hate this movie. The one thing I can't stand in a dramatic movie is when they bypass logical character motivations for a cheap cry. This movie is nothing but that. The scene at 17:04 pretty much had me speechless in how forced and stupid it was (and by that I mean its on par with the stealing from a hospital scene). I'm surprised the Nostalgia Critic left that scene as unscathed as he did.

One of my biggest complaints about most doctors is they tend to be terrible listeners. Also, there is good evidence that a patient’s emotional state plays an essential role in recovery. That’s one of the probable reasons for the placebo effect. So I was definitely open to the message of this movie. But instead of addressing these questions in an interesting way, it reduced them to the most trivial, idiotic cliches.

I Actually was able to speak to a person who was a nurse clown that did work with Dr. Adams. He did have some input on the story/script. She told me that changing the person from a man to a woman was actually requested and favored by Hunter Adams. He also wanted them to not show any violence in the film. This is why the murder scene was filmed the way it was. he also didn't want any affection shown between Williams and the female doctor as he did want to keep them as friends but the studio did go with them being romantic (Personally I do agree with this as elements such as this can help with the impact of the. later scene). I think this was a decision that he really hated , among others done to the film. I might be wrong about this but weirdly, She also told me he requested that no funds made from the film would go towards his hospital and he hopped that the viewers would donate to it out of kindness from watching the film.

In my experience they put people with similar disorders/problems/illness together so they can relate to each other (ex suicidal people together so they can get sympathy from someone who is in the same situation as them and clearly can understand) But I haven’t done any research to see if that’s true everywhere, I just assumed it was bad movie representation of mental institution

At 13:51 where did that old man get a gun? Who would give an elderly man who is in a hospital access to a GUN?? I know he's shooting the balloons, and that's supposed to be "whimsical" or whatever, but even still, wouldn't any of the doctors make sure that the patients don't have weapons or, even have any security to make sure NOBODY WOULD SNEAK IN AT NIGHT??? Explain movie! EXPLAIN!!

It was the 60s, if that helps. I assume gun laws and security was a lot different 40-odd years ago.

When I first watched this movie last year, I loved it. I looked through the reviews and was shocked at the reception it got. Nostalgia Critic raises some good points but I feel like he views this through a greatly cynical lens. Robin Williams (my personal fave actor) delivers such a wonderful charm, and his humanitarian approach to doctoring and to studies shines a beacon on what a sense of humour brings. The encouragement of brevity in university could do wonders for mental health, and I think this movie shows it well. Hospitals are often seen as sterile, soulless places, so much that hospices exist to try and create a lighter-hearted existence for a patient’s dying days. Patch Adams channels this through his teachings, and the relatable story of rebelling against the establishment is done well, if occasionally with self-indulgence. Yes they could have stayed more true to the source material, but I don’t mind when creative licence is used in adaptations. I think this movie deserves a lot more credit than it gets

As Critic himself says _at the very beginning_ , Most if not all critics of this movie disagree not with the teachings of (real life) Patch Adams, but with the poor way this movie tried to deliver them. Notice how Movie!Adams is never shown actually treating patients; the teachings of real life Patch Adams make the assumption that in between improving your patient's mental state, you're still going to, you know, _actually practice medicine_ . It's also important to consider _the doctor's_ emotional well-being, since getting emotionally attached to a patient only for them to die is pretty difficult, and is the main reason they try to stay emotionally distant in the first place.

No it does not and that is a difference of opinion, you aren't going to convince people to like something because you refuse to see the bad parts for what they are. The major changes to his relationships and complete lack of his deeper thoughts besides "silly happy fun makes everything better" is not something easily dismissed. And over all the movie is just sappy for the sake of being so, the scene where he has the family go out and he is the one to have final moments with the man is complete crap. Just as the critic pointed out, they use this emotional shlock to hammer in just how "amazing" and "in tune" he is....

I don't know... I work in a hospital and many doctors are social cripples and talk about patience like they are not there when they are right next to them in their beds. I have witnessed that more then once.
