The retelling of the Disney musical did poorly at the box office, but perhaps it has a life on home video. Doug checks out Pete's Dragon (2016).
Pete's Dragon is a 2016 American fantasy comedy-drama adventure film directed by David Lowery, written by Lowery and Toby Halbrooks, and produced by James Whitaker. The film is a live-action reimagining of Disney's 1977 live-action/animated musical film of the same name written by Malcolm Marmorstein. The film stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban, Oona Laurence, and Robert Redford.

It's interesting how they decided to make Elliot furry instead of scaled since we haven't seen that outside of Falcor. Although, judging from the original animated Elliot's design, I always thought he was more blubbery like a walrus.

The seems to be another time when Nostalgia Critic wants something that's the exact opposite of what we got. And then when we get the opposite he wants the original. You know damn well if this movie did keep the dragon as a mystery, he would explain how it would be a much better film if they actually did reveal it and how interesting it would be to see people having to actually deal with this dynamic. He does this in so many reviews. His bread and butter is when there's no exposition he complains, and then when there's any exposition at all, he mocks it. The Grass Is Always Greener.

promontorium Doug seems to be a contrarian who then justifies his viewpoint rather than an honest reviewer. Most of the time what he says isn’t WRONG, but it will be tempered by what the general consensus is. I’m kind of the same way, you can’t help but want to find some flaw with the general consensus. You challenge yourself to think outside of the trend so often, play devil’s advocate, that it becomes how you approach all media eventually. Not to mention his videos get more responses if they’re negative because it’s “funnier” to watch someone hate something. These short 5 minute reviews are the most honest I’ve seen him get, though. Those and the hour long reaction vids with his brother.

People look at the old Pete's Dragon with nostalgia goggles. The movie has laughable songs, dialogue that was way cornier than this remake, and a story that dragged on for the sake of it. Once you take off the rose-colored lens, the movie falls apart.

Or maybe a mash up of both might have worked; Pete the abused slave, invents an imaginary dragon to cope with the ordeals he faces, runs away, accidentally finds new, loving family. Pete then comes to terms with the abuse he faced and realises he no longer needs Elliot as a coping mechanism, whilst the family are rekindled with their childhood imagination and grow closer as a family due to 'Elliot.' The scene with Elliot looking sad through the window, is as Nostalgia Critic said; Pete himself feeling sad over the loss of the imaginary friend that helped him through the worst times of his life, whilst finally accepting the love of his new family. Any thoughts?

That comment about "what if the existence of the dragon was left up in the air" and whatnot made me think. What if the dragon's existence was like in The Last Unicorn? The adult's pure disbelief in dragons causes them to not see him at all, while those that do can see him. I actually think that's kinda interesting.

Something that consistently gets to me with kids movies is the amount of them that can be entirely dismissed by 'oh, kids have such great imagination'. When I saw this, I was actually impressed that the dragon was real. I'm sick to death of movies like I Kill Giants and Bridge to Terebithia that try to show us fantasy and magic, but it all just boils down to 'it was all in their head' or 'this is what happens when kids have issues and can't express it'. When I sit down to watch a movie where I'm told to suspend my disbelief enough to imagine that this situation could be real, I want to actually be rewarded for doing that with fantasy and magic that feels satisfying to watch, with situations where the characters learn and grow because of the unusual situations, not despite them. I don't want the movie to tell me that I would have been better off staying cynical, not believing, or that the lesson is to keep your head out of the clouds because growth can only happen in 'the real world', because that's always a movie version of the real world anyway. Lessons can be taught, characters can grow, developments in people can happen in a fantasy setting. And when it's a kid's film with that fantasy setting I feel really let down for my investment into that fantasy setting when it's all shown to be fake, imagined, like some kind of delusion being shared with the audience. Books, comics and films are the places where we can safely take off the beliefs of the rational, the normal, and experience things that can't happen in reality even if we wanted them to. So even though Pete's Dragon wasn't one of the best examples of it, I'm genuinely happy that what Pete believed was a real thing, one that everyone could see, and that had consequences for being revealed. Because it's just disappointing every time the ending of a film just tells us to grow up and stop pretending.

When the trailer for this remake first appeared, I wrote this parody lyric. It's set to the tune of "Bill of Sale" from the original film, with the Disney executives as the Gogans and a disgruntled fan as Nora: EXECUTIVES: We're gonna show ya How to Train Your Audience to recall Properties from the Seventies That they've never seen at all! Hey, kids! Ask your parents 'Cause this is their childhood! Then drag 'em to the theater 'Cause the reboot is twice as good! DISNEY FAN: There's no lighthouse (EXECS: Feel the dark and gritty tone!) FAN: That's not right, Mouse. (EXECS: Kid lost in the woods alone!) FAN: All you've shown up to now is lacking heart! (EXECS: He'll fly Up high! Shiny CGI!) FAN: You will ruin it (EXECS: Boy, ya like to carry on!) FAN: De-showtune it! (EXECS: Musicals are dead and gone!) FAN: Watch out, or I'll pick it apart! EXECS: We'd like to see ya try it! Buddy, it's just a teaser trailer Come on, give it a chance! FAN: When it comes out, the fans'll shred it Like that poor pair of pants!* You say It's "Pete's Dragon" but It doesn't feel the same! EXECS: How can ya say that when our lead has DEAR LITTLE PETEY'S NAME! We've got a reboot plot right here And we're gonna do 'em all! Wait'll we get to "Condorman" and "Unidentified-Flying-Oddball"! These films are our property Same as the family cow! We're gonna greenlight fifty more And we're gonna milk it NOW! We got a reboot plot right here! We got a reboot plot right here! We got a reboot plot right here! We got a reboot plot right here! We got a reboot plot right here... RIGHT HERE! *This joke referred to what Pete is wearing in the trailer, which I thought was a shredded pair of pants. Now, I'm not really sure what it's supposed to be, but hopefully it rhymes with "chance."

The original was a masterpiece. Watch it again. Elliott represented Pete's coping mechanism from his abuse. When he finds a loving family he has to let go of that mechanism that got him in trouble all the time.

I hated that no one in this movie acted like a human. The dragon was a more believable person than any of these sparkly eyed Hallmark characters on screen. In fact they were SO overly positive that "AGAIN" this would have made a way better re/hand animated movie. Say in the style of Iron Giant. But Iron Giant had better adult humor and a way more likable cast so maybe it is all just wishful thinking on my part.

I saw this movie recently and for me, the best parts of the movie were the beginning and the end. Also, anyone else feel like this is the type of movie that would come out in the 90’s?

Not sure why you think going the super cliched route of “imaginary friend ambiguity” would make this film more interesting. If that was the central question of the film, I’d have been bored to tears. Removing the ambiguity makes the story a lot more interesting to me. Maybe they could have done something more interesting with that choice, but I still think it was the right call.

I have no memory of this movie playing in theaters. All I remember is an announcement some years ago. I thought they never went through with it. So it was out in theaters in 2016? I completely missed that. Weird.

My mom loves the original and likes the remake. Although she feels like it went a little to gritty for her. In the original aside from the one time the dragon is grabbed that's the only stakes it has. This turns a little to dark for my mom but she has nostalgia factor to it

With all these Disney live action remakes, I can see what Disney is going for. Retelling classic stories with updated technology for a new audience. But here's the thing: their classic animation already did that. Look at the Disney Renaissance or even their 3D animated films today. I think Disney is doing better bringing new ideas to life, especially with CGI movies, rather than repackaging their "old" ones. I understand Disney wants to remain relevant with their audience and earn profit like any other business. But if that's the case, why not re-release some of the films nationwide? You can allow a new generation to see the animation that made Disney great then and has helped it become what it is today. What makes good Disney films is imagination; creating something complex, beautiful and interesting out of a simple story; it requires talent, hard work and creativity. That's what the Disney films in the 1930's, 1950's, and from 1989-1998 did. But these remakes are taking from what's already been done (those finished films) and adding things not needed. By trying to make the new ones shot for shot remakes, you actually prove how timeless the originals are and how dated the remakes will be; these new films thus lose that touch of magic that captivated audiences back then. If I wanted to see any of these remakes, I would watch the original classics instead. I think Disney can do live action films well, but not by remaking their animated classics.
