channeling? wrong term, im from old school, channeling is where we raise frame through floor, creating a upside down C-channel for frame to sit in, not just a raised floor, & instead of the body sitting on top of the frame, so you have to step over frame climbing into car, the process your doing is sectioning, & not done either in over 30 years, but glad your enjoying, truly an at form not many can do.
@MakeItKustom
@MakeItKustom 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much man I’m glad you’re enjoying it! I think we might have just a slight misunderstanding in what’s happening to this car. It is a channel or a body drop. Sectioning is where you cut the body and take a section out. channelling and body dropping are the same thing where the frame is being raised up into the car which is what is happening here.

Really enjoyed that .. and having done a somewhat similar body drop over a different chassis I have to agree with measurements.. more measurements.. sit back and look..look again.. 90% planning 10 % cutting. As you said it can go wrong if you don’t consider everything that changes. That’s why you don’t see this often.. it’s a big undertaking.

It would be nice to start with a car as solid as that Caddy ,,, im channeling a 40 ford sedan right now ,,, moved the front fendr mounts on the cowl up 2 and a quarter inches , the rear wheel houses are being moved up an inch and a half , and getting new inners , moved inboard at the top for large tire clearance ,, the rockers will now be taller also ,,, after the floor is done ,and structural, the windshield will be leaned back a bit ,, the top will get chopped and pankaked ,, an loose the B pillar,, hard top style,, chopping this sedan will involve moving the whole roof slightly forward at the rear and leaning the trunk opening also ,,to get rid of the hump over the back glass,, have another whole roof to use for the right radiuses ,,, enjoying your videos ,, keep up the good work !

Have you ever thought about widening it? I've seen a couple car widened. A lot of work. The passenger area stays the same but just below the windows they added a two inch each side. Need to modify bumpers and grill hood and trunk need to be widened. Wider tires or spacers. A lot of work but much meaner looking. One more fantastic video. Thank you.

I just added 6 inches to the middle of a Nash Metropoltan convertable,,, looks better than stock ! Its getting a 55 ford trunk lid ,cut down abit,, to get rid of the spare tire indent ,,, a modern chrysler Hemi ,,, 15 inch wheels are the reason its wider ,,

One thing i would strongly advise using eye protection against welding glare as much as you possibly can. I know its almost unavailable at times, and it sucks, but trust me when i say its worth it. I never thought much about it yesrs ago, i would just close my eyes when arc or mig welding. Found out the hard way that our eyelids offer slim protection from welding glare and mig glare is worse. Approaching 60 now, and my eyes are roached. Even with glasses i can only read for so long before my vision goes blurry, and im no longer able to focus....

Killer! Sounds like that project is going to be super unique! I remember when I was a kid there was a chopped top mini on the top of a telephone pole at a scrapyard. It was a panel as well. @MakeItKustom
@MakeItKustom 3 жыл бұрын
OK we are also modifying the suspension as well so that the car drops but picture the car dropped only on suspension as far as it can go with the frame would hit the ground first. Because the frame hangs slightly below the body the body would appear to be 2 1/2 inches above the ground. If I drop the body around the frame like I’m doing then when we lower the car on hydraulics the body itself will actually touch the ground
@Jdakota

Wow, Makes my 1940 coupe 2" channeling look easy. Did you brace the floor sheetmetal? If so what guage sheet metal did you use for the braces? On my 40 Desoto Im extending the body mounts (not the frame body mounts) up by 2 inches using 14 gauge metal, thinking about using 16 gauge for the braces, and 18 gauge bead rolled for the floors and the Z shape channel. Thanks a lot for your amazing videos not only explaining the steps but discussing the concepts and the "why's" . Keep up the great work

I totally understand the theory in doing this but if it’s a hell of a lot of work to body a car that’s already body dropped from the factory in the first place , there is also already a severe lack of head room Getting in and out of these cars as it is I can imagine 2.5 less inches of that as I’m constantly banging my head every time as it is now . I’m happy enough with chassis modifications for air suspension , just my opinion one of the big attractions for me with these cars is the already low stance set by manufacturer by recessing the frame into the floor pans .
@MakeItKustom
@MakeItKustom 3 жыл бұрын
You’re right they’re beautiful as they are but nothing Can’t compare to these factory body lines when they are laying directly on the pavement
@frankammirati3385
@frankammirati3385 3 жыл бұрын
@@MakeItKustom I totally agree I just opt for doing with suspension drop rather than a top drop or body drop , a aging body dictates that for me , can’t tell how many time I’ve slammed my head into the drip rails getting in and it just pisses me off to no end , once I’m in I’m good though .

I've always known it as SECTIONING, and not body drop. I know there is a lot of work. And cutting in the right place is the key to a successful process. Also I know not to cut just a straight line, but use drop downs and ups in the cuts. You can set up a way to lower the top half, like a pair of hydraulic jacks, hooked to a pipe or other steel fixture..Just take your time and THINK and be careful.I know you can do it. Ronnie.

Because the frame hangs lower than the body. Now the body is level with the bottom of the frame. And after I do my proper suspension install which will be hydraulics not air ride this car will lay flat as a pancake
@jsh3234
@jsh3234 3 жыл бұрын
@@MakeItKustom okay yes that makes sense now. Did not realize that the bottom of the body wasn't close to the bottom of the rails, but now the question, why do you prefer hydraulics over bags. I would think hydraulics would be a more harsher ride.

keep the floor. rust is lighter and way less expensive than cf, basically free weight reduction

Jeez man, am I the only one having huge difficulty trying to hear what your saying, while that music is being played in the back ground. I don't miss cutting up old rust buckets. I do however miss fabrication. Did auto collision and was a welder fitter for most of my life. Looks pretty straight forward looking forward.. It will be a nice looking ride when you all said, and done.

How do you know that you’re cutting an exact 2.5 inches? I mean how do you measure it properly? 2.5 inches on a radius wouldn’t measure the same if you measure it vertically, right? It would be short. So if you cut 2.5 inches on a flat panel you’d have to cut a little more material on a panel with a radius, I think….
@MakeItKustom
@MakeItKustom 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you are correct about the radius. There’s some rust in this area so I pretty much just sliced it and let it slip beside itself because I will be replacing that area to repair the rust

@@MakeItKustom Maybe I'm confused, but are you lowering the body on the frame so it sits lower? Can you not just channel the frame up into the floor? Oh btw, great videos. I like low-budget builds, don't become famous and start buying expense tools and build expensive cars... ;)

Dude your super bad, there’s so many ways to get in trouble with women I know because I’ve been married for 32years , so I know how to get out of it the best way possible. The bracing your talking about is just like marriage, the metal, the cool tools you have it’s an art. You have to get this rite or else, you got balls my man . I’ve seen a number of your KZbin panels and I have complete confidence you’ll pull it off , if your Chanel disappears I’ll know why, god speed, you’ll get it rite.
