Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally (RN) party scored historic gains to win the first round of France's parliamentary election on Sunday (Jun 30), according to exit polls. The final result will depend on days of horsetrading before next week's run-off. President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to call snap elections has “backfired in major ways”, says Jorn Fleck, senior director of think tank Atlantic Council’s Europe Center. He tells CNA’s Asia First that “serious political gridlock and unpredictability” is likely to happen in France, which will have repercussions at the European Union level.

Yes! I searched Google for the exact phrase "far right" and then for the exact phrase "far left" and Google returned 151 million results for the former 30 million results for the latter -- five times fewer.

Why is the right called "far right" five times more often than the left is called "far left"? (I discovered that statistic by searching Google for the exact phrase "far right" and then for the exact phrase "far left". The phrase "far right" returned 151 million results whereas "far left" returned 30 million results. And 151M divided by 30M equals 5.033.)
