Singapore government needs to clarify why the need for Singapore to participate in the Johor Special Economic zone citing benefits to Singapore and be transparent on what has already been spent on it and how much more are we committed to spend. The video showed only all the benefits flowing the other way leaving nothing for Singapore . Businesses and entrepreneurs know where to go to leverage their costs and will readily move to Johor if the cost benefits can be realized through larger profits . They do not need Singapore government to push them out. The only benefit I can see is for Singapore to participate in the SEZ is to secure greater co operation, more open borders and linkages with the Malaysians to allow Singapore government to set up government hospitals , retirement homes and special retirement visas for Singaporeans retirees to retire in Malaysia to avoid the high cost of living in Singapore. But this will take time and unfortunately, as seen in the recent past, Malaysia's political scene can change drastically in a very short time. But it is a calculated risk worth taking. The benefits highlighted by the panel and its impact on Singapore in summary are a) Malaysians can get higher minimum wages in the SEZ so those working in Singapore will return to Malaysia. So Singaporeans will loose their closest source of cheaper supply of labour and the labour costs in Singapore will increase causing more inflation in Singapore b) As mentioned in the video Singaporean PMETS might be attracted to work in the Johor SEZ so now we see the reverse of flow of Singaporeans crossing the causeway to work in Johor?? Most likely the Singaporean PMETS working in Johor will be attracted to live in Johor because now they have Employment visas to allow them to stay there while they lease our their expensive homes in Singapore. With the decrease in demand for housing with the exodus of Malaysians and Singaporeans attracted to Johor SEZ to live and work , the increase in vacant housing units in Singapore will depress prices and rentals. With a declining birth rate do we want our productive citizens to work in other countries and not contribute to the economy of Singapore?? c) Johor SEZ's success will ultimately increase the costs of living in Johor as can be see with property prices sky rocketing. More Malaysians attracted by the SEZ to return and live in Johor and possibly some Singaporeans PMETS will be attracted also . The prices of goods and services in Johor will also increase. Singaporeans will loose their supply of cheaper goods and services across the causeway and this will also cost higher inflation and cost of living in Singapore d) currently Malaysia's ex politician is already asking why Singapore government, as a partner, did not offer tax incentives for companies to start up business in the SEZ. Yes unbelievable but it has happened. Will Malaysia require more participation from Singapore government in the future once the SEZ starts to take shape. Singapore's initial foray into China Suzhou's industrial park had many problems so how do we avoid these problems and manage these expectations e) Malaysia is also attracting family offices to their Special Financial Zone in Johor directly competes with Singapore . There are currently 2000 home offices in Singapore with the two largest having assets under management of more than $10 billion each. Will this competition from Johor limit the growth of family offices in Singapore? The question of the benefits for Singapore participation in the SEZ is left unanswered so Singapore government needs to respond before the elections. So much for a deep dive in the shallow end of the pool . I am sure the chaps from Channel News Asia felt it. Bankers are not politicians and they are accountable for profits to get their own bonus. He mentioned that economic zones are hard to succeed and the country must have their own attraction/ attributes to make it successful. Singapore's reputation as a financial centre does not belong to Malaysia so why allow them the leverage it?. Does he even know we are a sovereign country separated from Malaysia for the past 60 years??

JSSEZ has taken a lot of references from Hong Kong-Shenzhen example. Hope both governments look at not only the potential benefits but also potential problems that come with it. If they cant manage the inevitable issues that comes along, the cons are going to outweigh the pros very fast. Ppl tend to focus on the similarities that JSSEZ share with Hong Kong-Shenzhen but a glaring difference is that Hong Kong and Shenzhen are under one country, China whereas Johor and Singapore are from different countries. This fact alone means progress will have to be managed even more sensitively and carefully. Things can go south very fast if both sides are only willing to get the most out of it at the expense of the other side. Win-win cannot work if you win to the detriment of the other side.

🍀The special zone is created to give hope to both johor and singaporeans. Actually hope is too beautiful a word but it is still hope. In the end it is actually a second jar container aka battle ground for people to be trap in in order for them to fight. Only the winners can survive. You all got see how black magic is concocted? You put everyone in it and they eat each other up until only the strongest survive. The first jar which is Singapore is already finished by now as most of the games and prizes in it are out of most average and struggling people by now so a special zone is created for the same daily commuting malaysians, smes, lower and middle class singaporeans to have a second place to try all over again but as usual the same oligarchs and the bigger businesses as well as suppliers and property speculators will move in as well and then politics from both sides will also be activated to pull as well. Things are actually different but also the same in the end. Its purgatory repeat again but most people wont realise it at all because too many things are happening in daily life. And hey the prizes and hope are there so people still have no choice but to fight for a chance in life in the end.

PAP MPs ability to push these concerns is limited by party loyalty. The likelihood of PAP MPs voting against their own party lines remains doubtful, leaving pressing issues under-debated.

Debates are carried internally all the time not only necessary in Parliament. There is an internal process for PAP and whole of government to thrash out policies before presenting it for public consumption and implementation

Even when PAP MPs raise questions-such as those regarding the implementation of SimplyGo or the S$556 million ERP 2.0 system

PAP incidents were largely addressed through ministerial statements, leaving the public dissatisfied with the lack of independent investigations or robust debate in Parliament.

Go back to school lah. You can’t even get the present and past tenses right. Singapore WAS, not is, considered part of the Johor sultanate.

Singapore is now a sovereign country, a First World nation next to a ‘big’ Bolehland which has been lagging behind Singapore in many metrics, including economy, education, you name it, for decades and it will be so for generations to come. Singapore has the best Air Force in the region, and arguably the best Navy too. Perhaps Bolehland would one day be foolish enough to try to ‘take back’ its rich neighbour. Singapore will then prevail and perhaps Johor, Sabah, Sarawak will then join Singapore and enjoy exchange rate of at least 1SGD to MYR3.5.

Both sides don’t want to collectively solve the frequent jams in the last 50 years, so put down what you are smoking. Special zone my ass. Not in my lifetime.
