Think of it like how Bluetooth can discover your wireless device by pairing/ syncing with it, but on the WLAN network instead, open connection devices with no security can be discovered and accessed. This was a very valid technical question but it was not worded correctly, and notice how the ceo said he would get back to him on that if its a technical question, he understood.

This is is actually a massive issue and Chu’s response made me shudder. If an app can access another device on the same network it can also infer what people are browsing on that network. So if you have tik tok, but your brother doesn’t tik tok can actually tell what your brother’s device, what he’s searching, and then push that information to give you content that may react to or products you might buy. The fact that you guys don’t see this as a major cybersecurity concern is ridiculous

Been in cybersecurity for years, the question is not stupid just because you do not understand. Tiktok (and countless other apps) will access your network, they can monitor your traffic the same as your ISP will. Typically big companies like this will collect this data, save it and then use it to personalize ads or content you receive. Congress is worried that in Tiktok's case, they are collecting this data and then selling it back to the Chinese government. That is essentially the question he is asking.

He’s highly skilled at negotiation, however it’s just a technique in response to the technique used by the guy asking the questions. The first question is not a dumb question, it’s actually the opposite. It’s a fairly beginner technique called leading the witness. lawyers do this all of the time. He already knows the answer to the question, he’s just laying the foundation for follow up questions. Well, the comments are all wrong. The question is very very legitimate. For instance, Google Maps detects (doesn't connect) to multiple nearby WiFi signals to triangulate it's location in indoor settings like malls, to inform Google Ads if someone has converted from the ads, which is obviously not anything to do with the intended use of the app. The fact he is elite level dodging, and using "We don't do anything outside normal industry norms" answer suggests that they may indeed be getting more than just internet from the WiFi network, it might be getting data on the network devices and potentially monitoring traffic.

The CEO most likely has a business education and not network/software so he’s confused. His product people would know if TikTok tries to access other devices on the WiFi - many apps do. Nothing necessarily nefarious about it - most of it is to provide functionality like the Roku remote app discovering Roku devices automatically on your WiFi. It couldn’t do that if it did not have the permission to scan your home network. Most apps do not need such permissions but you can always have an app that surreptitiously collects information about devices on your home network and sends them back to the app creator. If an app is allowed access to other devices on your network, it can collect a fair bit of unique information about your household. Many devices on your home network like WiFi routers even, may have default passwords that can be abused by a rogue app to get further access into your network and eventually data. All that said, I really doubt TikTok does of any that. It is a horrible SM platform. I doubt it is the next communist implant as these Congresspeople have been trying so hard to prove.
