Best speech from Mr Ng Kok Song. You truly understand the spirit of the EP Constitution and has insights of why LKY set up the Elected Presidency in the 1st place. You speak the truth; comes across as not only will you question the govt if and when necessary, but you Dare to question. Absolutely agree that one cannot check on the policies that one has implemented or put in force. Also, resigning one month prior from a political party, IMO, doesn't make one a non-partisan candidate. I wish you all the best on 1Sep23. NKS mentioned that he wld divest from his investment company to avoid conflict of interest if elected (not required by law, but a sacrifice he says he is willing to make) For majority of singaporeans, i think it wld be rlly hard to not have any ties to the establishment, considering the size of singapore and the way almost everything is linked to the establishment in someway or another. This is even more so for presidential candidates who hv to run a 500m company, it wld be hard for a company that size to not have any dealings at all with the establishment The other "independent" candidate is so clearly aligned and supported by the opposition (i also dont want some guy just opposinf for the sake of opposing) & delusional that he is out of the question for me.

It is precisely that all 3 candidates have either ties with the establishment or the opposition that claims about being non-partisan or independent can easily be taken at face value. He can divest, start a biz or do whatever with his investments. There is still a chance he might feel beholden when situation calls for a decision. As for Mr Tharman, no doubt he is subject to the same risk, he has served in the public service all his life. I have more confidence in his ability to discern whether a decision to spend the reserves is indeed necessary for the people or really just giving out goodies to buy votes.

This office will not be worse off if NKS becomes the president. But i am voting based on merits and experience. Any successful business relies on the best talents on board, no sympathy or try try. That is what makes Singapore successful. Tharman has a clear edge based on merits and my vote will always be basing on merits. However, I recently got to know him because I found some old videos other posted (e.g, WCCM Singapore) about NKS 8, 9, and 10 years ago. What he said 8 years ago is exactly what he said 2 weeks ago.

On KZbin, there are many videos others posted about him 8 and 9 years ago where we can see his wife who was very ill and dying . We can also see how he looked when he was young. How he did meditation with his wife, how he danced with his wife. If you're interested, you can search for these videos on KZbin. So far, what he said 8 and 10 years ago is still the same as what he said in the past two weeks. He even described how his wife wrote a letter to LKY to thank him, and he said the same thing 2 weeks ago. He's a consistent person. The rest is up to you.

Mr Tharman is my favourite candidate but I can't vote for him. Let's assume the scenario that the government has done some shady stuff, I would expect someone holding a key role in the government (Mr Tharman) to be involved. He wouldn't bring them down to their knees if he's involved. It's just a simple conflict of interests. And let's look at why the PAP is "sacrificing" Mr Tharman, who is such a key figure in the government? Why do they need to field a super candidate? It shows a desire to win the presidency. Why is winning the presidency so important when the role of the president is just to safe guard the reserves? If the government is clean, anyone can become the president and they have nothing to fear. Don't forget the president cannot raid the reserves, only the government can. Sacrificing a A list minister from the cabinet like Mr Tharman is quite fishy in my opinion. Picking Mr Tharman as president because of his ability is like picking a star striker for the goalkeeper role, and we don't even know which side he's playing for.

The many accolades of these 3 presidential candidates are impressive… and it left me wondering if they were strengths we had or enjoyed in the outgoing President Halimah. And if we are honest enough to admit that she, while a kind and unifying force for SG, did not bring into the office the executive stature or international influence…then: a) Was SG shortchanged in the last 5 years? b) if not, then Tharman’s impressive records are best served in the cabinet, not the president’s office since we had a somewhat ceremonial president the past 5 years and we weren’t any worse off. Yes independence can help, but one important role of president is to be the face of Singapore to the world. As much people said about independence of candidate, it is a good consideration but there are more important criteria. Also, the independence factor won’t stop people colluding. Ong Teng Cheong was called the people president but he was part of PAP previously. So let’s focus on the capabilities of the candidates. And let’s agreed to disagreed in a gentlemanly manner.

Our government didn’t short change us, we are a little island state of no natural resources and look at us today. We can’t stop but stay competitive in order to stay afloat. Singaporeans are a unique and blessed group of people and our reputation is among the stars because we have and had the best of the best people running the country all these years. If Mr. Tharman is not elected as the next President of Singapore, the PAP will understand that voters do not support the government appointing ex-ministers to stand for president election (Under the Constitution, the president must be a Singaporean citizen, non-partisan and elected by a popular vote) Different investment profiles of NTUC and Temasek and GIC. NTUC is an insurance company that typically invests in long-term government bonds, which is a safe but low-return investment strategy. Temasek and GIC, on the other hand, are sovereign wealth funds that invest in a wider range of assets, including private equity, real estate, and infrastructure. This more complex investment strategy has the potential to generate higher returns, but it also carries more risk. This is the reason I think NKS is better fit the job to look after our reserve before give it to Temasek and GIC (plus working under LKY for 30 years). Singaporean will need to weigh the different investment profiles of the two candidates carefully when making their decision.

Mr Tharman is my favourite candidate but I can't vote for him. Let's assume the scenario that the government has done some shady stuff, I would expect someone holding a key role in the government (Mr Tharman) to be involved. He wouldn't bring them down to their knees if he's involved. It's just a simple conflict of interests. And let's look at why the PAP is "sacrificing" Mr Tharman, who is such a key figure in the government? Why do they need to field a super candidate? It shows a desire to win the presidency. Why is winning the presidency so important when the role of the president is just to safe guard the reserves? If the government is clean, anyone can become the president and they have nothing to fear. Don't forget the president cannot raid the reserves, only the government can. Sacrificing a A list minister from the cabinet like Mr Tharman is quite fishy in my opinion. Picking Mr Tharman as president because of his ability is like picking a star striker for the goalkeeper role, and we don't even know which side he's playing for.

Tharman is okay but sounds like he hasn't given the Presidency role as much thought. He sounds like a man who has suppressed his passions and opinions for a party line, almost robot-like. He reiterates his past contributions and almost treats the Presidency as a retirement job for international work - "stability" (more of the same), no sense of proactivity or innovation to initiate new concrete ideas. Unfortunately this is common amongst civil/public servants unlike those in the private sector (e.g. Facebook, Amazon, etc). It's time for a new imaginative president not burdened by bureaucratic thinking and who dares to call out the status quo where necessary (NKS).

I'm a stickler for communications and I admit TKL was not my first choice, but his sincerity is off the charts. He seems like the true sound of Singapore and it will stop the charade that we are an international city across the island. The fact is, the ones enjoying the international lifestyle are mostly govt, expat and the Chinese Singaporeans. We tried the glitz of the English educated and it didn't work for all and the cliques, so may be, it is better to be honest about who Singapore really is and will be shaped by, and the land will respect us more for it.
