There's an in-universe reason why Sonic makes movie and actor references. Like you stated, he was bored and lonely without someone to bounce off of. In the first movie, he's seen many movies and read many comics in his current life on Earth, thrown in without Longclaw to guide him, her last lines to him were to never stop running and stay away from others lest they use his power for nefarious schemes. This little guy has only known to speak with references through media in solidarity.

I think the reason I don't have much of a problem with the human character subplot in this movie was because I went to see Sonic 2 with my girlfriend. who generally isn't a Sonic fan (the only knowledge she has of Sonic lore and characters is from the SnapCube Fandubs lol). She absolutely loved Rachel and the wedding subplot and thought it was hilarious. I think what these films did the best out of most video game adaptations is easing non-Sonic fans into the world and characters but not getting rid of what makes Sonic so popular to begin with. That's why I'm glad that the films have progressively been becoming more and more Sonic like by escalating how many elements from the games they adapt.

Someone already explained the constant references Sonic makes, so I'll explain the Ghostbusters one. The Ghostbusters StayPuft Marshmallow Man is referenced a couple of times due to the Master Emerald being explained as being able to turn thoughts into reality. The Staypuft Marshmallow Man came about in Ghostbusters because Ray tried to think of the most harmless thing while the other 3 tried to keep their minds blank when forced to choose the form of the destructor, and the Marshmallow Man was chosen and made real from Ray's thoughts, just like what the Master Emerald is said to be able to do. This extra layer is why they didn't go for a simple megazord reference or something else.

You certainly aren't the only one. I have invited friends to see Sonic 3 with me and they had to catch up on 2. They loved the wedding. So did my friend who I took to the cinema originally, as did the other mums in the cinema. This was a calculated addition to the movie to make the movie appeal to more audiences. Is it perfectly inserted and integrated? No. Is it the worst part of the movie? Definitely up to who's watching.

I would like to try to defend the wedding scene, because I think its flaws are highly exaggerated. It functions in the plot by introducing GUN, by humanizing Rachel and helping her warm up to them all, by getting Olive Garden guy on Sonic's side, by getting Tom and Maddie introduced to Tails, and by establishing a small arc for Tom (wanting Sonic to have some "wingmen," though I'd say that it goes understated in the end). Even in the earlier parts of the movie where the wedding doesn't seem to affect anything, it shows Tom and Sonic's relationship and how Sonic is interested in Rachel's life even if she wanted nothing to do with him before (probably thanks in part to Maddie's influence). Lastly, humor is subjective but I find the wedding scene memorable and quotable unironically. I agree it does go on too long though. If I could trim anything out, it would be the part where they have to rescue Sonic and Tails. Despite some funny moments with Rachel, I think they should've shaved off that entire section and just focused on Rachel's arc. I'll agree it's the weakest part of the movie, and I'll even agree it's not entirely necessary, and there are more natural ways these things could've been introduced into the plot. But I think you're really underestimating what it brings to the table, even beyond a subjective entertainment level. Your rejection of the "general audiences" take is only more proof of that. The average viewer probably wouldn't appreciate Rachel's emotions about being TRICKED INTO A FAKE WEDDING being completely shoved off in a corner just to get back to the Sonic characters. I know we Sonic fans want to see Sonic, but as a Sonic MOVIE fan, I want to see ALL of these characters get satisfying arcs, not just the Sonic characters.

I don’t get why people are like “oh the human characters ruin the movie and waste time!1!1” while in reality not just the human characters are a nice addition but they have nice things to offer and they don’t have the highest budget ever to make it where 100% of the movie has cgi elements. This. The human characters are not even bad, I enjoy them. It's okay if you don't but there are far more egregious examples. Cutting down scenes from the incredibly well animated CGI characters and machinery also saves a ton of budget.

The biggest problem I have with Tails is his friendship with Sonic, and by that I mean the lack thereof. It doesn't feel genuine and it feels rushed, instead of introducing their dynamic as 2 dudes clicking with each other that will eventually turn into a strong bond they introduced their dynamic as "It's Sonic and it's Tails and they are best friends of course". Like the movie's goal was to have the videogame friendship adapted and instead of getting there they just skipped the foundation and the building towards that and fast-forwarded to their goal. It doesn't work, the sleeping tail blanket scene doesn't work cause I don't believe in their friendship yet, without the knowledge of "ah, the duo from the games yeah, inseparable" this duo is completely shallow here. They should have gone way more low-key and less on the nose with the best friends angle and let that naturally develop off-screen in-between projects. That way while we don't see it happen on-screen there's a passage of time, literal months, you can buy that they bonded over that time.

The perfect scene in my opinion was the opening scene because I love the Scavengers and the way Robotnik met Knuckles on the mushroom planet. They actually did plan on including Angel Island after that, but scrapped it for some sort of timing reasons, as what I heard on the GHZ podcast interview. Indeed. I really feel the Sonic films need to embrace that more. Say whatever you will about "The Super Mario Bros Movie" and it's pop culture needle drops, but there was a fair and healthy dose of score that was dedicated to putting in allusions to various pieces of Mario music, and the film would have been more generic without it. As Sonic stands, it's doing solid on references and character, but less so on really feeling like the game with that touch.

As a semi counter to the drip feed of Sonic characters, one could say it's for general audiences to digest easier, but I'd say these characters benefit greatly from being soft rebooted/reimagined in a new context/world divorced from the games and that isn't preestablished. That way we can see stuff like Team Sonic form without anything in the lore of the games sort of preventing it from making sense (like Knuckles watching over the Master Emerald for example), or seeing Sonic and Shadow meet for the first time.

Yeah, this is why I actually went to see this one in theaters proper. It was properly embracing the material in a way I didn't think I wanted to just pass off until it got a home release. Hell, I had my doubts at Idris Elba as Knuckles as I expected him to being another starry name just sleepwalking an easy check. Glad my doubts were put to rest as he quickly blended in, comedy and drama and all. And imagine my surprise getting Colleen to actually reprise her role this time. I think it was a combination of various circumstances that allowed her to come back for both budget and time reasons, but I am still very happy to see such a rare thing come to happen in a big cinematic adaptation of something mostly driven by a voice cast (Memories of a completely recast Ninjago film that didn't quite feel right....)

Sonic Movie 2 is where it's at,it ups everything(but the music)to the ante,introduces Tails and Knuckles, and had given them the spotlight they've needed for the longest time. The action is stellar,although I do feel we needed more locations for Sonic & Tails to go to so it would feel more like an adventure,the snowboarding and Labyrinth scenes are more of what I want and I hope Movie 4 feels like a full on A to B adventure like many of the games as I'm not really getting much of that from Movie 3. One more thing,I honestly think they added Shadow to the movieverse way too early,any other character they add in the future won't live up to the second most popular character in the whole canon.I feel they have to add some incredibly deep cut characters like Hasbean from Doctor Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine to capture that hype factor,they could have him be a creation of Agent Stone through some testing with new coffee ideas,maybe some weird magical mcguffin like I dunno the Phantom Ruby falls from the sky and he uses to create the perfecf coffee and ends up creating Hasbean.

I think that one of the most likely reasons why they added Shadow in this soon could be due to them needing to make an SA2 inspired movie for that to happen because he debuted in that game and Eggman played a big role in SA2 so they couldn't make a movie adaption of that game if he isn't in it (they already confirmed that they would never recast that character in the movies, that that role would always be for Jim Carrey). So they probably thought that it was their last chance to do it because Jim had mentioned that he was thinking of retiring and would only come back if the script is gold. It didn't get revealed by that actor to anyone until recently that he was just taking a break.

Can't lie, while most disregard the wedding, it did lead to a hilarious moment in the theater for me and my friends. When what's her name tried to get revenge on her man, there's a part where she tosses away the gun Tails made and a guy in the front row said "Why'd you drop the gun?" and in response, I went "Yeah, why did you drop the gun?" The whole theater ended up laughing for a good five minutes after hearing us ask that.

To answer your question about Walla Walla, yes it's a real place, my aunt lives there, I don't know why it's called that. I also don't know about Iowa's name, I think it comes from some indigenous tribe but don't quote me on that cuz I could be wrong.

The problem with the Mario movie was that they had a really, really weird choice for the voice of Mario. Mario ends just sounding like just some guy or an everyman. Although Keanu Reeves being cast as Shadow is still hard to believe because people have joked "What if Keanu Reeves ended up voicing Shadow? That would be cool, but won't happen." Then, it did.

It doesn’t make a big difference. But getting a good knuckles voice is nice. Acknowledging knuckles is basically black is icing on the cake for me. Seriously outside maybe boom knuckles voices have kinda sucked prior to Idris

In my opinion, which sonic movie is better is dependent on whether you value individual epic moments, or an overall cohesive whole. There are scenes and sequences in Sonic 2 that, for me, far surpass anything sonic 1 has to offer. However, sonic 1 is a far better movie in terms of overall construction. Also, the reason why I like the movie references is because of ADHD. Movie Sonic is very clearly an ADHD kid, and as someone with ADHD who gravitates to movies, tv shows, and books, and who loves making references to them, I relate to Sonic making movie references because if I was on an adventure to save the world, my ADHD butt would probably make a bunch of movie references too.

Dude, Walla Walla was where notable real places in Looney Tunes took place. Walla Walla is the home of the Wishy Washy Washing Machine Company (referenced in 1955's This Is a Life?) as well as The Ace Novelty Company (referenced in 1956's The High and the Flighty). It's a REAL city in Washington. You're not the most studied lad on here are you? Also a baby fox is called a kit. kit | kit | noun the young of certain animals, such as the beaver, fox, ferret, and mink. As for the Rachel issue. It's a necessary evil. For starters it establishes the lengths GUN would go to achieve a mission. Second, it also addresses Sonic's need for his own crew. That was also fine. But, I get it, it was a way to continue building on the characters made out of a lark for comedy and to give Sonic his shoes. Perhaps they serve a much larger purpose in Sonic 3 thematically. Time will tell. Also, have you forgotten THE WINTER SOLDIER WAS BRAINWASHED? It's a more educated reference from Sonic.

When it comes to criticism of the film, obviously fair game. I don't agree that the wedding scene's execution was the way to go. As for the Walla Walla thing: Not a lot of us Brits would know much about the names of individual American cities, what states they're in, etc. But you were right about one thing in that, evidently I am not the most studied lad on here, no. Given that Walla Walla was named after a Native American tribe. I'm not out to throw pot-shots at Native Americans, especially as a Brit, so that section is removed.
