Chant of the Mystics: Asperges Me - Divine Gregorian Chant - Healing & Purifiying Chant Music

"Asperges me" is a Latin Gregorian Chant antiphon. It traditionally accompanies the so called Asperges, the ritual sprinkling of the participants in the catholic rite by the celebrant with holy water. This is part of the entrance ritual, where a spiritual cleansing of the people takes place. Its words are taken from Psalm 51 (50). The deeper and consequential meaning of this prayer and rite is, that the entrance to the spiritual reality is only possible by the thorough inner purification of heart, mind and being, which then with Divine help opens up the entrance to the inner mysteries.

For those of us who attend the Latin Mass and sing this every Sunday, it is so odd to hear. Compared to other chants, it has an overall more major key feeling, that is to say more triumphant than solemn, and is a song we sing as we prepare ourselves for the sacrifice of the Holy Mass. As we sing it, the priest processes down the center aisle of the church to sprinkle everyone with holy water. The lyrics in English are: Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed: Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy great mercy.
