Maybe it would be worth recognizing the market of portable weighing scale - you would need two - one for each side of the trailer - long enough for both trailer axles to be on the mat/weight at the same time. And you would read the weight of the trailer tongue from the pressure of the auxiliary airbags in the truck. In this way, you would know immediately if you are overweight or not.

Never use an impact to snug up wheel nuts. Torque wrench only.

Gotta know how the truck handles at different weights! 9 times out of 10, I can feel that I am heavy. The first stop is cat scale if I feel heavy.

I wonder if one of your shop employees or even your Wife could learn how to dispatch both trucks? That would be a huge help to not have to do that yourself out on the road. I don't know if you know or watch Alex Kogan's channel, he's out of Florida and HAS a dispatcher who does pretty well for him, and many others do as well.

When you weigh you should pay attention to all your weights; Steering axle, drive axle and trailer axles. I don't think even shifting the weight around would have helped in this case but sometimes it will. You should always find the closest scale to your shipper and weigh the load before driving very far in case you need to take some of the load back. Shippers lie all the time about the weight just to try to save a few bucks.

Invest in a good quality torque wrench for each truck/trailer. Do NOT depend on even a good cordless impact gun.
