When news got out that the Americans were leaving Saigon, thousands of South Vietnamese descended upon the U.S. Embassy, desperate for a chance to get out before the North Vietnamese arrived. "Last Days in Vietnam" premieres April 28 on PBS American Experience.

Now you are seeing this? What about the Shah of Iran? (1950s - 1979) Support of Hussein during Iraq/Iran war? (1980 - 1988) Maybe the King of Saudi Arabia will be the unpopular host of American geopolitics. (1990 - ????) With the social-economic problems we have/had in our own country for decades & centuries I would hope that necessary evaluation of so-called candidates seeking to obtain leadership in their countries would not be influenced by US government - that has a history of not getting it right (exceptions being S. Korea and Iraq for the moment). Not to mention hastily establishing anyone to become "President" in the country we presumably believe will suit our national interests.

@@Verminator4 I mean... When I said lightning fast, I didn't even imagine... They just announced that Ashraf Ghani is stepping down, the interim government will cede all power to the Taliban (allegedly unconditionally) and the Taliban allegedly control Kabul. They also just announced that they control the whole territory of Afghanistan. Jesus Christ that was fast. A week ago they controlled like... 3 of the provincial capitals?... Man... This operation should have begun at least 1 week earlier, military and civilian intell sources had cited as early as April 2, 1975 that within the month, it was a very real possibility that the invasion of Saigon was going to happen.

Should have started *_THREE_* weeks earlier, but Graham Martin had to be the pneumonic Cold Warrior bozo and delay it to the last minute, trying to boost morale, which was not going to happen, obviously to try to honor the death of his adopted son. Still, he probably *_never_* forgave himself for doing such a stupid thing. He lived with that for the rest of his life.

@@Tripp1993 You have to understand. We had an “agreement” to come to South Vietnam’s aid, should the North invade. Well, the Democratic Party wasn’t interested in honoring that agreement. The Ambassador should’ve realized that Washington wasn’t going to help South Vietnam.
@Tripp1993
@Tripp1993 2 жыл бұрын
@@HVACSoldier I understand. Graham Martin was trying _desperately_ to keep Saigon a safe zone like Seoul and Berlin were and find a way for it to stop peacefully. The one other thing he had hope for was that he would hear B-52's heading to Hanoi to blow it to pieces again. But that didn't happen. Anti-war feelings were way too strong. I'm sorry about what I said.

I remember seeing these people desperately climbing over the fences of the US embassy and clawing their way up to the stairs to the helicopters. Now I'm watching it again in Kabul. This time with people desperate to get into the airport, jumping on the outside of moving airplanes, and falling to their deaths. It's so sad. I never wanted to see anything like that again. Here we have history repeating itself. 😞

Which is why the US needs to stop assisting foreign governments or getting into useless conflicts. As for Afghanistan, I understand they want to find Osama, but they should have left after they got Osama. No point staying after that.

So you're telling me that all the thousands of Vietnamese who were inside the embassy got evacuated? I find that hard to believe. It would take at least a 100 trips in that small helicopter to transfer all those thousands.

I believe maybe only about hundreds of Vietnamese got evacuated this way. The majority left through much more dangerous boat journeys and the OPD program.

Referencing the Saigon airlift with Afghanistan is a handy hook. However, the story is how the circumstances behind the airlift are identical. Like Nixon, with Vietnam, Trump surrendered to the Taliban in 2020. Like Vietnam, our ally government was corrupt. Like Vietnam with President Ford, we thought the ally military would oppose the rapid advance of enemy forces
