Well, under any other circumstance, it is true. Many Guardsmen never live to see a Space Marine in their lives, and look up to them in awe. And only a Guardsman with a death wish would turn down the much-needed help that a Space Marine most likely represents, much less try to take on a genetically-engineered super-soldier that can wipe out entire squads of Guardsmen without breaking a sweat. Only a top-ranking general of the Imperial Guard could convince a loyal Guardsman to fire upon a Space Marine, and even then only reluctantly. Unless, y'know, it's the Marines Malevolent or something. But since there's no apparent generals around and the Guardsmen fired upon the Space Marines over something so trivial with literally no explanation, I think Cyrus would rather not go into all the nuances of this when it's clear that something has gone very wrong.

Cyrus was at Kaurava - men he trained fought General Stubbs' loyal guardsmen. Also, he could have a chat with Tarkus or Avitus, both of whom served on Kronus and saw Governor-Militant Alexander's loyal guardsmen fire upon them.

Now those Imperial Guard may very well have been corrupted by chaos, after all they are on a planet that's been in the Warp for a millennium; but they didn't really give them a chance to find out, did they? They were just like “drop your weapons”, “no you drop your weapons” and they both start shooting at eachother. Maybe the IG thought the Ravens were corrupted!

I do think those IG were chaos-tainted, but in fact, so were some of the BR as well. @YouKnowMeImJosh The Guardsmen shot first (throwing that out there, since people always take their side). But anyways, Imperial forces openly fighting each other over idiotic reasons is a Dawn of War tradition. In the fluff, the fighting over stupid thing is more subtle.

Avitus being a traitor was very poorly written, he clearly despises traitors throughout the story and him falling to chaos is fine, but it should have been handled very differently him leading Black Legion troops was terrible.
