A small tip for the clutch cable problem: widen the hole that connects the cable to the lever and change the cable to a bigger one. I've done the same to my Rotax 122 bike and it hasn't snapped in a while. About the oil mixer, personally I haven't had any problem with it (24k km), I guess it's just a matter of preference and checking on it once in a while. Let's just say it could be a MUCH worst experience to own one lol.

on my Suzuki VJ 22 250 (Suzuki supplied this motor to Aprilia) I had endless issues with the power valve needing cleaning. I actually removed it and polished it to a mirror finish on a bench grinder, I thereafter cleaned it every 6 month or so and she was amazing. that mirror finish alleviated any sticking of that burnt mixture sticking to it. It therefore open and closed far quicker and easier

2 stroke oil pumps rarely fail, its mostly user error. when coming back from high rpm its wise to blip the throttle a few times to squirt extra oil into the cylinder.

@ChrisMacdonald-ns8rx
@ChrisMacdonald-ns8rx Жыл бұрын
I don't think throttle blips make a difference for oil injected systems, but I've been pondering to add a wee bit of premix to fuel as well (as having oil injection), boost the overall oil intake into the engine, and if you do get a pump problem on the road then your engine gets at least some oil and doesn't blow up! Maybe add 1:200 oil:fuel? Belt-and-braces.
@mr.whiskers6273
@mr.whiskers6273 Жыл бұрын
@@ChrisMacdonald-ns8rx cable operated pumps do work with the blips of throttle , there is always a possiblity of the pump failing due to a loose tube or something but i think the chance is too small to alter the bike for it. i would however add oil to the gas in the tank to prevent rust
@ChrisMacdonald-ns8rx
@ChrisMacdonald-ns8rx Жыл бұрын
@@mr.whiskers6273 interesting thought, does oil help reduce corrosion? Makes sense. Ethanol in fuel is evil! Ironic conversation as this week I just changed over from an ashless Castrol Power 1 Racing oil to a low ash fully syth ester base, the low ash content should be better for high revs which I tend to do a lot of, but just today compression has plummeted and won't idle now. Sigh. Got me doubting the ester base oil. Top end off to check. Clearly just wear and tear if it still runs with a bit of throttle, but did the change of oil affect that? It happens, I think it is due for a new top end. Maybe just the rings. We'll see! Ah! the joy of 2-strokes.
@mr.whiskers6273
@mr.whiskers6273 Жыл бұрын
@@ChrisMacdonald-ns8rx I believe in mineral based 2 stroke oil it’s been tested and showed that there is a power decrease and a wear rate increase when a full synthetic oil is used. 2 stroke oil does prevent corrosion definitely that’s why old Italian 2 strokes always have good tanks due to the oil in the gas tank the Japanese bikes with the injection suffer from the ethanol and tend to rust when sitting over a long time. As to your specific case I wouldn’t be comfortable as to give the blame to the oil as I don’t know how you prepped the cylinder and piston.

I had ridden 50cc 2 stroke bikes for the first 3-4 years of my motorcycle riding. By far my favourite was my Aprilia Red rose which is a cute little cruiser. I rode that thing everywhere and surprisingly I didn't have too much issues with it apart from having to stop to let the coolant come down in temperature on the side of the rode a couple of times when I rode it a little too hard.

I ride a 32 year old Suzuki RG125FN. I run premix and it's not a big a ballache as you make out... I measure 320ml into a used, dry 500ml water bottle and keep it under my pillion seat. When I hit reserve I know it's 10litres to fill it again; 32:1. Put the oil in the tank, add 10 litres of fuel at pressure and it mixes it, quick rock on the suspension, a sideways shaky shaky and jobs a good'un. Empty bottle goes in the bin. You are right about over oiling, if I'm sat in traffic, using low revs it can splutter some oil out of the exhaust but just use the revs and clear it out and in true 2 stroke fashion! I just couldn't trust a 32 yr old pump to be reliable!

loving the 2 stroke content. my oil pump stopped working while i was doing 80mph in a business suit on one of these. last time i was not in full leathers as it scared the shit out of me the back end seizing at that speed. amazing little bikes though and ok i've not been on one since i was 19 (i'm 51 now) but i just remember wringing it's neck to get as much GO out of it and how flickable it was in the corners, was the first bike i got my knee down on and it was so easy to do it, the bike just wanted to lean. but anyway, thanks for the RS125 content, i've been hoping someone would make a good video about on, there's very little out there about these bikes or at least very little that's actually entertaining.

I had one, the power valve is very soft and gums up easily. A good clean and decarbon every couple of months is advisable to keep it free. Be gentle with it. The metal is very soft. I put a 150 polini top end on it after it blew up at 35000 due to a failed small end bearing. Added some low end torque and a tiny bit up top. Great handling bike. Never had a problem with the oil pump, most guys let it run out and then don't prime it well to get it pumping again. Silly. Rear shock is shit. Feed it decent oil and do the rings and small end at the schedule and it'll keep going, not a hard job to do.

Yeah, internet is full of rubbish and stereotypes. Any bike will break down when maintenance is bad. I had only italian cars and bikes in my whole life except my first bike which was an rd350lc 31k (49 now) and never ever broke down or having any hard issues, while familymembers with french, japanese and mostly german cars did! But I do maintenance on my cars and bikes myself and with care... If anything just suspicious it needs to be addressed, not just leaving the time bombs ticking... Owning a car or bike doesn't mean just driving/riding it.

I have the 2009 (new shape) version here in Canada. The power valve on these is a pain in the neck, and the whole bike is a bit of a Rube Goldberg contraption in terms of maintenance access. It is a ton of fun on a small track though, so much lighter and more fun than a modern 250 4-stroke. I wish it had a little bit more jam to better keep up with the 390s and Ninja 400s that are very common on the track. Yours sounds like its running pretty good, they'll do about 155-160km/h indicated (maybe 150 true depending on rider size) at full power so that's a good indication if yours is running right.

Another good reason to keep the oil pump system is the fact that ethanol and 2 stroke oil don't mix properly. If you premix, the oil will sit on the ethanol(E10) and this results in startups without any oil. If using premix, allways wobble the bike to mix the fuel before cold starting.

Ethanol and mineral oil do not mix. It will fall out of suspension. You must use castor oil to mix with ethanol. Castor only falls out of suspension in extreme cold.

in italy it's very popular for people to buy a pneumatic exhaust valve for that motor, made by companies like italkit and NRteam. It's simpler, more reliable, it allows for more customization and gives you a better performance overall. the only drawback is that it needs a hole to be drilled on the exhaust port outside the cylinder, but it shouldn't be too hard if you follow the instructions

Power differences are tiny, and the difference between models of each bike are WAY bigger than the difference between each on (ie, RS125 over the years had 3 different carbs, 2 different engines and exhausts that went from very good to awful - the Mito als used 3 different carbs, the early 7 speed and later 6 speed engines, with a significant number of different barrels, and various exhausts)

I have one of these, i was like you, saying the oil dispenser is a good thing, but still, maintained correctly it failed and took a fresh engine with it barely 6K km on it. Rn im running premix and i won’t go back ever again, stock jetting is usually bad anyway, rejetting a 2 stroke is something you have to do when you change anything in the intake system anyway.

I have an Italian 125 2-stroke too, but it has a Yamaha engine in and has been reliable for me so far ... hoping it stays that way, fingers crossed. 2-stroke 125cc are amazing because they are such a pure form of sports motorcycle, lightweight single cylinder that flick from side to side and around corners but still keep up with most anything else on roads (when running right). FWIW, on your power valve check, I'd suggest you check the cable adjustments (more cables to go wrong!). You may have unintentionally adjusted the cables for the better when you removed it (as well as loosening up the spooge on it). On Yamaha YPVS, which is a rotary valve system, small changes to the control cable adjustments can make a relatively big difference, so worth making sure it is adjusted, and TBH worth trying a few tweaks either side of standard position to see if that improves things on actual rides, as changes to exhaust pipe and rejetting will change the exhaust pulse phasing. The Yamaha engine is nice because it is already homologated to be derestricted (restricted simply limits the power valve, derestricting allows full power valve opening). Aprilia needs hacking to derestrict, isn't road-legal after hacking (according to Aprilia's own workshop manual) and results can vary, depend on the skill of the hacker. I think bodged derestricting adds to RS125's reliability reputation.

Id kill to get my hands on one of these or a 250 here in Canada. I have a 1976 RD400 that I spent 6 months rebuilding EVERYTHING and put it all back to stock. Its pretty reliable but smokes like a B when Im sitting at lights or needing to full throttle it going on steep inclines. Thats really the only thing that annoys me.

I'm rebuilding a aprilia sx 125 2009 2t ATM just fitted wheel bearings, one step closer getting a mitaka 140cc and 34mm carb set up can't wait until she's ready still a long way off. I've own the mx 125 the pain of owning the rarer models , the parts are hard to get. The aprilia love it (pain, love,depression,joy)😂

I never knew it had an oil pump and premixed it the whole time. And had to carry a quart of premix with me everywhere. Good tines! Love that sound!!

Its funny to see how that bike was lusted after by many 16 year olds around the globe. Back in the day i couldn't afford one and didn't have the licence for it, but oh boy did i wanted to own one of these. When i got my big bike licence two years ago i've scrolled past a few of rs 125s and thought "wouldn't it be awesome to own one now?".. i guess you showed that it is possible but maybe not the best idea to do lol Still enjoying your trip down memory lane with this one mate, stay safe

Seems about right for an Aprilia. The gaskets ain't that bad depending on your country, I guess. Yes the power valve does need cleaning every so often and yours looked like it was needed tbh. Also with the starter motor. The relay can be kinda questionable. If it just makes a clicking noise. It's most likely the relay.

Make me having good memories during my teenage life, got a brand new RS125 Replica, most of my then friends/schoolmates also bought the Replica, except 1 bought the Extrema Version which heard it had a bit more hp, but not important, its when we tried on the straights, i always won. Also tried changing rider/bike from the one that bought and collected the bike with me which means both are exactly the same, even change same of exhausts, also same results that my bike would win by abit from the rider I changed bike with, while the rest lost to us with some big difference and there's also a stunning bike at that era, the Cagiva Mitto which got 7 gears,also losing to us(maybe for the length we raced on didn't suit his bike configuration). 2 strokes bikes are the best with so much power compared to the same category 4 stroke bikes. They were slow. Of cos those big bikes like litre bikes, MT09, MT10 and many more, those bikes are monsters bikes on the road, just one acceleration, cannot see them clearly already 🤣, ridden the Yamaha R1 before but never went fast, only riding around my car park area using 1st gear which i got shocked when i just acceperated a bit more, i almost flew backwards if i didn't hold tight to the handle🤣. Once a rider always a rider no matter what kind of bikes😊👍Have fun and ride safe every riders👍😊

I had a Cagiva Planet 125 which was like the Ducati Monster version of the Cagiva Mito. I loved that thing but it went through batteries so it spent most of its life being bump started. Luckily 125 2 strokes are the easiest thing to bump start.

my son had the same issue on his Aprilia, a 2011 model, even if the bike is in neutral if no green neutral light is showing it wont start, i traced it to a loose wire on the neutral sensor, im sure its offside middle of the motorcycle, behind the rear brake pedal, a single wire pushed onto a round sensor pin, so crimped it and a good connection now and it hasnt done it since
