I have done some woodworks in the past but this woodwork plan kzbin.infoUgkxZF0EMnrujZvqHhGkxiz559uIABJWR9TG helps me do much in a far lesser time than i used to do i have already built several projects with this plan and i intend to do many more soon. Thank you so much!

Very nice. I like that you used wood from the salvaged tree for your mom. When visiting my uncle a few years ago, he gave me two slabs of walnut that my dad had cut down 25 years before. I made cutting boards and other items for my family from the wood.

I just discovered your channel and it's nine months after this video was published. Watching it, I was reminded of the cutting board my brother made for a wedding gift for my then wife and I. That was 34 years ago, and while I've been long divorced, I still use the board every day. It's scratched on both surfaces because I flip it every so often, but it has a lot of years left in it. Your two boards are stunning in their beauty, but will last long enough to become family heirlooms. Well done!

Thanks Jim. I'm glad you found my channel. And the beauty of a well-built wood cutting board is you could always sand and refinish it and it will be like new all over again.

Hello. Your boards are absolutely gorgeous and your craftsmanship truly shows how much of your heart and soul went into making them. I have always loved and admired how a wood craftsman can make something so beautiful out of something most would just take for granted or discard. Not being a woodworker I must confess to being a little disappointed by fact that there was no explanation verbally as to what you were doing and what tools/machines you were using to create these beautiful works of art. I'm not sure if your intent was to instruct somewhat, or just showcase your mastery and skills and was produced with only the knowledgeable woodworker in mind. I'm sure your mom was overjoyed with her new cuttingboard and family heirloom. I look forward to watching more of your videos.

It seems like your mother did a great job raising you. And there is something in building things for your relatives - knowing that things you made will remind them about the main reason in our life - our family. In the end it's all about it. About family. And as always great build, great camerawork. I really apriciate that you put your time for setting a light and choosing a nice camera angles. And the story about oak was great.

Those are so beautiful! Sadly my mom is no longer around, but when she was, I bought her works of art like this but in ceramic. Full disclosure though End Grain cutting board should never be used for actual food preparation. Totally fine as serving boards as long as they are reserved for one type of food like for a cheese board. Or as a heat-resistant surface to put your casserole dish on where it's not actually in contact with the food. Otherwise cross-contamination is basically inevitable and no one wants food poisoning for dinner. If it has been used for raw food best thing is to send it out for professional cleaning. Next best is to seal it with resin and use it to keep hot dishes off the table. Best wishes

The cutting boards are beautiful!! Thank you for sharing. I watched the video at 2x speed and the music was awesome even then! Your transparency is appreciated regarding your sponsor. It's actually kind of inspiring in a way because you're being supported by something that is not directly related to your craft, like a tool company would be. It can feel disingenuous when you know that the craftsman has an obligation to promote Company X's tools in his or her videos, but I totally get it. You gotta make money to support your craft somehow. Kudos to you for finding a sponsor that doesn't put you in a position where it could seem that you're selling out your craft.

This is awesome work. I've been working with fabric - quilts for Children's Hospital and Memory quilts - for about 10 years, and use a similar process making pillows and tote bags out of shirts, cutting the shirts into strips, sewing together, cutting across and re-sewing, and re-cutting and re-sewing, making similar patterns as the cutting board you made your mom. What was the liquid you used for the finishing?

Those sound awesome Jerry! I soak the boards in 100% mineral oil. Then I finish them with a 1:1 mixture of mineral oil and beeswax a day later. I have a full explanation in a follow-up video:kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4ekmKyBjbGsq7c

I know this video is old but I just stumbled on it. As someone that's fairly new to woodworking, I was curious as to your choice to use a drum sander to level the cutting board as opposed to using a planer and maybe why you prefer the drum sander
@GunflintDesigns
@GunflintDesigns 6 жыл бұрын
There are a few reasons... Mainly safety, it can be dangerous to run end-grain through a planer. I have heard horror stories of the blades catching and basically the whole thing blows up. For a more practical reason, my planer would just be too small to fit the final full sized piece through. The design of my drums sander makes it do I can put really big things through it.

Beautiful boards! I'm sure your mom loved it. That is a lot of steps to get the end result which is gorgeous!

I know it was almost a year ago but great job. With all that twisting and flipping how did you manage to keep all the end grain running in the right direction or is that really important?

Thanks Al. The end grain is always running in the same direction until the last cut and flip, thats when it goes from an edge-grain board to end-grain. So it's not too difficult where you're actually doing it.

How much material would you say you lost cutting the boards up so many times? They look great, your Mom is going to love it. Keep up the great work

Honestly it is a lot! If I had quit at just one glue-up instead of continually cutting, flattening and re-gluing to get this pattern, I probably could have gotten close to having another full cutting board out of the material that I started with. - At least a half size one!

That's an awesome cutting board. I want to make one myself one day and watching your machine skills make it look so easy. Where did you learn or train those machine and safety skills that you have, very professional ?

I've just always been around tools, growing up with my dad and grandpas who built everything. It takes lots of practice, but I have no formal training.

I’ve seen a couple people use the relatively large diameter PVC as a base during glue ups. Does this help align them or just a cheap and easy way to get them off the bench surface?
@GunflintDesigns

Both. It also helps them sit naturally without the clamps running into anything before they are tightened. I also feel like it helps me keep things cleaner when the glue starts to flow. I first saw the idea from MTMWood.

Fantastic build. I had to laugh because I have that same planer. I did the exact the same thing with the longer bed. It made it 95% better. Although I have yet to make such an amazing cutting board. Great work.

I’ve been trying to make this type of board but keep getting a pattern. After your intake glue up do you cut a specific measurement? Ie 1/2”, glue, then recut, rotate glue? Very nice
