Correction of the 18:00 tiktok for those who care (which I imagine is -1 people): Economists aren’t “lying” to people, this is a simplified narrative people use around folks in elementary/middle school so that there’s a basic understanding of finance. In my case, at least, the transition WAS explained. Money didn’t come from the sky or whatever; as communities connect and individuals specialize, a currency is required so that people in specialized trades can purchase necessities. Gift economies exist in societies where each individual can (theoretically) be self-sufficient. Think hunter-gatherers or early agricultural societies! However, once you have folks whose whole life is writing scrolls, they need some cowry shells/coins/gold to get eggs. Money is not an inherently evil concept nor is it a SCHEME by the [[EVIL ECONOMISTS]], but it can be made into something far more sinister if society generates capital for work in such a way that doing your specialized work in the global market is less sustaining than yeeting yourself into the woods and shredding your Social Security Card.
