How cool! Is yours for the "throwing," style of knitting, or the other kind? I learned this one with the throwing style: Through the door Around the back Out the window Here comes jack Through the door (slide needle into stitch on other needle) Around the back, (throwing the yarn around the inserted needle) Out the window (pull through to have the loop on the no longer inserted needle) Here comes Jack (slide the stich originally inserted into off of the needle it's on)

Some tips for beginning knitting: 1. Get circular needles. Knitters pride is a relatively affordable, yet very high quality brand (bad circular needles, a.k.a pony brand ones, are made by the devil himself). 2. Wooden/bamboo needles are slightly more grippy, so you should have less slipped stitches with those. Then when you're more comfortable with knitting you can use metal needles, which makes it quicker 3. Try continental knitting- its more similar to crocheting in that the yarn is held in the left hand, and it is generally less taxing on your hands/arms than english style (which most people first learn). Its also quicker for most knitters (if you care about that). 3. Knitting projects take a lot longer than comparable crochet projects, so lots of people find it worthwhile to invest more time in swatching etc, and more money in the yarn itself (as you create fewer overall projects, you can knit with more expensive yarns for the same overall budget) 4. Knitting uses less yarn than crochet! Its a less '3d' fabric, and the stitches are less complex (structurally), thus it generally takes about 25% less yarn than comparable crochet projects (though this is a super vauge rule of thumb, always go according to what the pattern says) 5. I would really recommend following a pattern for your first few projects, as knitting is slower and less 'free style-able' than crochet. Petite knit, Jessie Maed Designs and Friday knits are a great place to start. Lots of the older Friday knits patterns have accompanying youtube videos, which i found helpful when i started knitting. 6- if you get a stitch wrong it is actually super easy to fix. You can even fix a lot of mistakes many rows back without ripping back, if youve got a stitch wrong. Find the wrong stitch (and i like to put a lightbulb stitch marker on it) and trace upwards until you get to the corresponding 'live stitch' on your needle. Drop that stitch off your needle and 'ladder down' by pulling the stitches out, until you get to your 'wrong stitch'.ladder down 1more stitch. Then you use a crochet hook to re-do the stitch, by makign a single chain into the 'ladder) of yarn above it. Continue making single chains into each ladder above until you get to the top of your knitting and put the last chain stitch back on your needle. It sounds complex but honestly its super easy! 7- watch nimble needles 'knitting anatomy' and 'knitting basics' videos to understand knitting, then use verypinkknits videos for tutorials!

Ugh this was me learning to crochet after having knitted for years 😂 everyone says crocheting is so much easier but I have tried to pick it up on 4 separate occasions (the internet, my grandma, my mom, and the lady at our local yarn shop all tried to teach me) and just suffering through it and finding it impossible to keep the tension or see the stitches. There are so many more types of stitches than knitting and purling. Just a nightmare. Recently I picked it up again and I’ve made a placemat with granny squares, a couple octopus and a chicken 😂 so I’m feeling marginally better. Just keep at it.

@corneliastreet2491
@corneliastreet2491 Жыл бұрын
I’ve never seen anyone cast on like that. Seems so much easier! Also, I remember knitting at the teeny tiny tips of your If you drop stitches, you use a CROCHET hook!! To go back and pickup the stitch and pull it through. If you’re worried about having to undo, put a lifeline of a separate color of yarn every so often, just use a tapestry needle to weave through all your loops and then if you have to undo a lot of rows all your stitches will be on the yarn lifeline. The needles with stoppers are the best for beginners so you don’t lose your stitches off the end 😂 I also recommend wooden needles to start because they’re grippier and help you keep your stitches on. Once you’re really good, aluminum needles are so much faster AND you can start using DPNs to knit in the round or do cables, but honestly most people prefer needles that are looped together over DPNs for knitting in the round. My biggest thing is I HATE counting stitches, but it’s important to keep counting them so you don’t have to undo multiple rows 😂 I’m just lazy and hate it. But it’s infinitely easier to count knit stitches (especially in fluffier yarn with less visibility) than crochet stitches, because they’re all on your needles. Also, I swear at my knitting pieces when I mess up too, so it’s ok to be frustrated because I say the f-word at my yarn a lot and my roommate thinks it’s funny 😂

When I was a little boy about 6 years old, my mom got together with 2 neighbor ladies in the morning to drink coffee and knit. Mom was a phenomenal knitter reading charts, knitting and drinking coffee at the same time. She knit like you and I breathe. It was very natural for her. She knit continental style and was very fast. I noticed the 3 of them were always laughing so I thought knitting must be fun. I asked mom to teach me and I was right, knitting is fun! When I was about 12, I taught myself to crochet out of a craft book. Mom didn't crochet. Since I was already a knitter, I learned crochet quickly and easily. I am 66 years old now and enjoy doing both. I have have made many, many gifts in my day. I love knitting socks, gloves, mittens, scarves, sweaters, you name it. I enjoy crocheting christening sets, vintage doilies and tablecloths. Anything vintage really. I like thrifting for vintage items and then copying them. I am at my most calm with knitting needles or crochet hook in hand. I love feeling the rhythm of the yarn or crochet thread as it moves through my fingers creating the many thousands of stiches. It is a very Zen activity to me. I am in my own world at that moment. My mom has been gone now for 20+ years, but every time I use her knitting needles I feel connected to her and I am transported once again to that little boy sitting in his mother's lap while her hands guide mine in the rhythm that is knitting... I love you mom and miss you so much. Someday we will knit together again...

I both knit and crochet, and have found that knitting is easier on my hands and fingers than twisty/pully crochet. If I might offer a couple of suggestions, start by knitting "flat," with out increases or decreases worked into two (or more!) stitches. These can be tough on the hands if you're knitting a bit tightly as beginners often do. A nice first project is Grandma's Favorite Dishcloth, in easy garter stitch worked in worsted cotton yarn. I still have my first Grandma's Favorite, and I have come a long way. Best wishes as you foray into this new craft!

@Holly Auna, I love this video! I, too, am a longtime crocheter (since I was 7 and I'm now in my late fifties), and your awkwardness and "I don't get it" is EXACTLY me when I'm trying to comprehend knitting. It's like we crocheters just have a completely different mindset and we're trying to learn a foreign language. I tried to learn knitting years ago but the result was dismal -- my tension was just horrid and it felt like I was all thumbs (or trying to knit with my feet!). Recently I felt the urge to try again, especially with so many KZbin commenters saying how continental style is so much easier for crocheters. So I gave it go a couple nights ago, watching Arne & Carlos, since they're highly recommended, but still struggled a lot. I'm not giving up, though! I want to learn to knit socks, since finding socks is so difficult for me as an Autistic with Sensory Processing Disorder. So watching you struggle -- not just to learn the mechanics of knitting, but the mental aspects of "what the heck is this?" which is what I, as a crocheter, feel, too -- was extremely validating. Thank you for sharing this!

But I forgot everything after a while of not doing it so I relearnt everything from KZbin. I like the sheep stitch videos. They helped me a lot. I can now do decreses, increseases, knits, purls yarn overs, the tail cast on (which is the best casting on option) and even cable knitting. I still do crochet from time to time. I'm currently working actually on three separate completely different things. I'm sewing some pants for my mom, I'm working on a crochet shrug and knitting a sweater vest in the round.

Since you learned to crochet first, you should look into "continental" style of knitting! :) It's essentially knitting while holding your yarn in your left hand vs right. Some fellow crafters I've talked to have found it easier to learn to knit in this style, since it's similar to how you hold your yarn in crochet. But so far so good!! When I first started knitting, there were holes everywhere and it looked loose and wonky. Yours looks great for just starting! I also recommend using a larger and smooth yarn in a bright color to make it easier to see your stitches!

I still can’t do continental 😂 I want too because supposedly it’s faster and more ergonomic but I can’t do it. But then I recently actually figured out how to crochet after years of trying to learn it then giving up then trying then giving up. Now I can make some small things. I still prefer my English knitting, I can do so many patterns and different stitches for different textures, which I love. One day I’ll learn continental, just like I learned to crochet. Baby steps,

You should head over to Nimble Needles channel for a more in depth tutorial on knitting. I picked up crochet during the pandemic with the hopes of getting a sweater out of it once I learned. Within a year of learning crochet I made the decision of learning knitting. I went through several video tutorials and it ended up being frustrating until I found the Nimble Needles channel. Then everything just clicked! As a crocheter, I find it easier to learn knitting "continental sytle" rather than "English style" (the method you're currently using) because in continental style you hold the yarn in the opposite hand of the working needle, similar to how crocheters hold the yarn in the hand opposite to the hand holding the crochet hook.

when I drop a stitch or half the project I just die for a little bit first it is good to have crochet hooks you can fix so many things using them I learned how to knit first a long time ago I do more crochet now though, I started last May I do still knit One thing that is a good steppingstone between crochet and knitting is knooking i'm not sure if it would help your specific situation but I would definitely watch a video or two on it (you don't have to worry as much about dropped stitches cause they're still on a string )

I learned to crochet first and then when my grandma passed I got all her crochet and knit stuff but she lost knitted. I’m pretty decent at crochet but I’m honestly just getting the hang of knitting. I have 0 clue how my grandma would knit while sweaters for their dog

My personal is you want stretchy yarn and the circular bottom stopers and you have to be a little looser on your first and last (cast on) or it'll dip down

So the ones with stoppers are straight needles the ones that have a cable attached to both are circular knitting needles and the ones that have 5needles are double pointed knitting needles

God, I knit ONE TIME like 15 years ago and never did again... I recently had a friend try to knit a frog and they couldn't so they tapped me in for help bc I knew how to crochet and IT'S BEEN AN EXPERIENCE. I feel this video so much, I see why YT recommended it lmao Every 5 minutes it's "Crap, where's that video on purling again"

I would highly recommend circular needles, they are a lot easier to handle plus it gives you more options ( knitting in the round and knitting flat) depending on the pattern you choose. You don't need double pointed needles unless you are knitting socks or prefer them to the magic loop method, but again you can do magic loop with circular needles (basically circular needles are my must have) Then I would try to find a free downloadable pattern or a youtube video pattern to follow that is beginner friendly :) or even just practice swatching so you get the hang of the different stitches :)

So cool!! I know how to knit a dishcloth... I learned that before crocheting...crocheting was so much faster!! But now, I want an Icelandic sweater!! And those need to be knitted... so I'm just about ready to learn how to really knit. But i didn't get the right needles. Making a sweater - it is wise to get these needles that have a flexible wire attached to them both. I think they call it a circle. Well... I'm watching videos and I'm almost ready!!

I feel like I'm a very creative person and I'm obsessed with learning new crochet stitches. I usually have at least 3 projects running at the same time. I even cross stitch and use plastic canvas. BUT knitting is the the only thing I can't do and have literally "rage-quit" several times!! I've tried but once it comes off the needles, messed up, I'm done! 😂

I love knitting! Even though I only knit scarf. Personally I like the metal needles because sometimes it makes a clanking noise. Never get the wooden ones because they are cheaply made and can pick at your yarn sometimes. I never had a preference about the bottom of the needles. Also from Personally experience start with a thinker yarn like 8mm because I find smaller yarn to be more frustrating. Edit: Crocheting is to complex for me and I think people who Crochet are magical 😅

And need it for my elbow bc of a knitting deadline. Get circular needles. The weight is evenly distributed and it’ll help when doing anything bigger then 50 stitches

You’ll get there just remember I like KZbin and crocheting it will get easier and if you’re having trouble of tightness try using a thicker knitting needle to start on because it’ll help you teach you not to tighten knit it will teach you how to knit i’ll get better trust me I taught myself how to knit. Yeah it does get better and you can do pretty patterns when you get good enough.

There is two methods of inserting the needle into the loop and pulling the yarn through, in my language it's called classic and granny's method, I hope that in English it sounds the same :) I knit from age 11 and I still find classic method not easy, slow and uncomfortable! Maybe you can try to learn the granny's method. I think it's like some people hold a crochet hook like a pen and some like a knitting needle, or some slip on the yarn on the hook with the left hand and some do the twisting and operate the hook with the right hand to pull up a loop, same result bur slightly different methods (maybe you can also try just to throw a yarn on a hook while crocheting without twisting your right hand, if it hurts!)

I’d prefer bamboo knitting needles because if you’re going to do it for a while your hand can sweat and then the metal ones get sticky. Also they could be very slippery when learning compared to bamboo.

Also, if you turn the cast on tight, if you go a size, bigger with the knitting needle, that can help make the project look the way it supposed to

I learned knitting the same time I learned crocheting, I dunno why I did that but I can say, crochet is much more fun cause I feel like I have more space to be creative with the stitches and designs. Knitting feels a bit plain for me. But when I want to shpwcase color changing yarns, I feel like knitting is the way to go. The colors just pop better when the stitches are uniform. That's just my opinion though...

Fun fact you can actually use crochet hooks to pick up dropped stitches that you've missed there's a KZbin video on it and if you drop a stitch while knitting that row pinch under the dropped stitch with your fingers (don't let go of your needle learned that the hard way) and pick it back up with one of the needles doesn't matter what one you can always move it to the correct needle

This was why I avoided knitting for so long, but then I forced myself to learn how to unpick and frog my work, and then I could really progress. That was the turning point where I could go on to knit anything competently. Highly recommend just spending some time learning how to unpick stitches!
