Hiya! Long time knitter here!! I love love LOVE seeing folks learn how to knit for the first time ❤❤ I recommend learning how to purl after doing knit stitches for a whiiile to get the muscle memory! Cabling does not take new stitches, just knit stitches and a small cable needle. it makes a fun effect! Id recommend trying it in a bracelet or headband for a first project. Knitting is easier on wrists and elbows than crochet because its a different motion, and knitting generally takes half the yarn that crochet does for something of the same size. Making it a relatively cheaper craft. The caveat is its a bit of a slower process than crochet. Knit uses a more elastic stitch, ie it bounces back when you stretch it one way, crochet stretches but it tends to stay stretched out when stretched. KEEP GOING!!!❤❤❤

When knitting, there are two basic stitches. Knit and purl. Once you’re comfortable with those, you’re on your way to adding to your stitch list. And if you look at the back side of a knit stitch, it’s a purl stitch. And the back of a purl stitch is a knit stitch.

My biggest tip - learn how to unpick very early on. I knew how to knit but I didn't know how to fix mistakes so I would knit for ages, make a mistake, then have to pull the entire thing out and start again, which was very disheartening, so I never went very far with it. Then the internet happened, (yes, I'm old), and a nice lady on KZbin showed me how to unpick and fix my mistakes and that's when I turned into an actual knitter and can now make anything. So yeah - learn how to fix the mistakes straight away and you will progress quickly!

@@sq5 ooh, good one! Frogging projects for one dropped stitch is maddening. My biggest tip is to start with larger needles and very simple projects. Just get familiar with holding the needles and yarn, and do the most basic "knit" stitch. Also- as with crochet, there is terminology you'll need to become familiar with. I learned so much on KZbin.

10:20 Yes! Literally earlier today I was talking to my friend about knitting (which I am also new to- or, at least, haven't done in over a decade) and, although he normally calls my crocheting "knitting," he was like "oh! you're talking about crocheting, right?" Gotta love the irony of putting in the effort to remember crochet, only for it to finally be knitting, lol. What a lovely gift! I do think you may notice a bit more tension/strain once you get faster- I certainly have as I've gotten back to knitting quickly, but it's definitely different and I think a little less stressful than crochet can get! That said, you should definitely check out continental knitting! A lot of people say it makes more sense if you're someone who is used to crocheting, and it doesn't require using your dominant hand to pull the yarn over, so it's less stress on your wrist _and_ faster. Good luck!

Yep, if you do a knit over and over you get a pattern called garter stitch and its the most beginner friendly pattern for blankets, hats, scarves. As typically a stockinette (what we usually associate with knitting) has a weight imbalance causing it to curl up. And that one is done by knitting on the right side (you'll notice the right side at the cast on row has a nice braided type look as opposed to little bumps) you knit and on the wrong side you purl. Knitting is also like forming long crochet chains that are attached to one another. Almost like in tunisian crocheting. Also to make it easy a knit and purl are opposites. If you look at a knit stitch from the back it'll look like a purl and vice versa. So in switching stitches you're making it so all the knits sit on one side and the purls on the other. Alternating these stitches for the more advanced gives you ribbing and more fancy finishes like a seed stitch where you alternate a purl and a knit so you get vertical lines (if you look at the same stitch from each row) of knits alternating with purls. Even cable knitting for the bravest out there. Where you create braids. You might know from other comments I crochet but I knit too. I think I learnt to knit first then how to crochet. And my mom taught me how to. I've made so far plenty of hats from sheep and stitch (I don't remember the name. Is it blank slate? Skater?) it's a simple hat knit with very giant needles. A scarf I believe (I actually might've crocheted that one), a shawl (it was a free pattern I found on lovecrafts), a sweater (also a free pattern on lovecrafts) and some other things.

Hey! New subscriber here! Nice to see another lifelong crocheter learning to knit. I have been trying for so long to learn. It's a lot harder on my hands than crochet. My dad got me chunky yarn and giant needles for Christmas, and now I can knit! It made it so much easier on my hands, and I can go so fast now. Now to try again with regular yarn and needles.

Can’t wait to try long tail casting on! I saw you knitting and decided to watch you. Hilarious you too were coughing your face off! Not that you were sick, but the timing of it was funny. You’re probably all recovered. Being In an air bnb on vacation and sick stinks. Hopefully going to a couple yarn stores anyway. Loved the catch up. Hope your dad had a lovely birthday! 🎉

Why are we the same person! I also learned crochet as a little girl, only knew single crochet and made everything with that one stitch lol. Now I’m learning to knit, managed to cast on to a mechanical pencil and work one row yesterday so I’m buying needles this morning, after I finish this coffee 🙂 If KZbin had existed when we were kids we’d probably be soo good at these art forms by now. I also taught myself to paint from KZbin as an adult (like seriously paint).

Also Mariane Cresp mentioned in her boost your mood video about creativity, Kennedy from the channel Cozy K, cozy hobbies to try videos and Morgan Long recent video the perfect cozy day preparing for Autumn she mentions having a self-care day based on the letters in your name. Hi! I just found your channel through this video and you have such a great attitude about everything that I will subscribe as soon as I finish this comment!! Thank you for sharing your creativity!! One tip from someone who has taught both knitting and crochet is that it is a lot easier when you’re learning knitting to make sure that you are not making your stitches on the tip (or point) of the needle. Make sure to push the needle through the stitch before you start the next stitch so you don’t make the stitches too tight. The size of the needle determines the size of the loops you’re making and it’s important that those loops don’t get too small or it becomes hard to make the stitches on the next row. I found that my students would make the stitches on the needle tips when they were starting to knit faster, so I just wanted to suggest that you watch your knitting as you learn and practice making sure that you don’t get too tight.

This was so heartwarming. I’m someone who has knit for 3 years, never used a pattern in any regard and learnt to purl very late (because i knit continental purling was so hard!) And with crochet i’m also not using patterns, just going with the flow. I think what I felt was missing in knitting (flexibility?) i can now have in crochet. I’m gonna combine the two together as i still find the technical part of crochet difficult. Crochet bothers my pain more, but if i try knitting with cotton it’s the same pain so there are ways to avoid it! I try to vary between the two and sewing and that helps. Like continental is better for my hands at least

Hi Holly, I just found your channel today and I'm glad I did. I've been knitting for years and your comments about nerve damage really struck me. I have nerve damage from hand writing code for an exam, and it really affects my knitting to the point where I had to change styles. I very much recommend looking into "Very Pink Knits" and her video on portuguese knitting. You wrap the yarn around the back of your neck and use that to help with tension, and the individual stitches are made by flicking your thumbs. English knitting, I can't knit for longer than an hour if I'm lucky. Portuguese style, I can knit an entire day and not notice the time fly by :) Definitely recommend giving it a go :)

As a fellow life long crocheter who learned to knit 7 months ago: learn continental knitting asap. It’s a way of holding the yarn that’s waaaaay more like crochet with the yarn on the left hand at all times. Also the crochet cast on is my go-to. It’s stretchy, it’s smooth, I can do it lightning speed with more accuracy than any other traditional knit cast on. Apply what you know of crochet to knitting construction. Working in the round is way nicer in the beginning since it’s all knit stitches 😅.

Holly!! I have been in the same boat, lifetime crocheter new knitter (again). This last time I started, about 2 months ago, I finally got it and can do it. Maybe it helps that I got Clover Takumi interchangeable circular needles? I previously got the Tunisian kit so all I really got was one set of needles but still they helped me get moving on knitting. I believe one of my problems was a conceptual hurdle because I could make whatever I wanted with a singular, short crochet hook provided that the project isn't a big ol Tunisian work. With knitting, I couldn't grasp that I may need different lengths of circulars for different projects. Setting aside crochet for about a month straight and just trying and trying knitting really helped. I might be a little too ambitious for my current skill as I would like to make either a sweater or cardigan and possibly steek it, but who knows, sinxe I've already steeked little practice pieces and they came out well. From one crocheter to another, you got this. Also, knooking is a really fun alternative to use for knitting needles, though I don't do it very often.

There is a type of crochet that is a mix of knitting and crocheting. It is beautiful. You should try it. I have heard that you can even make your stuff look exactly like knitting!

This year I made it my goal also to learn knitting - I am a crocheter -, everyone in my household asks me ''what are you knitting?'' when I crochet. Everything is knitting for them 😅 at this point I don't correct them. At least when I'm actually knitting now they are right for once 😀

Yes, people do call my crochet knitting -- so I bought myself a t-shirt which says "It's not knitting, it's crochet". I, like you, learned to crochet first, though I have been knitting for a few years now. I'm not sure which one is better for the hands; I think a lot of the strain on your hands/arms is due to how tight or relaxed you are when doing it, and some of that is going to be dependent on how nervous or relaxed you are with what you're doing. And you were being very relaxed. Yeah, knitting is very easy to frog... far too easy in some cases. The reason I chose to learn crochet first (alas, no grandmothers to teach me) was because I didn't want to worry about dropping stitches. I'm still much more confident with my crochet than my knitting.

I feel like my story is similar, I technically learned to knit 2 years ago, but it wasn't until I tried again last summer that I felt like I actually knew what I was doing. My go to practice projects usually ends up being headbands/ear warmers, low commitment if I need to restart a bunch of times because something went horribly wrong.

Continental knitting is actually a faster knitting. It is also a preferred way of knitting if you have learned to crochet first.

Fun little trick I do: Using a crochet hook to cast off with. It is a little be easier to slip stitch with a crochet hook than it is to do with a knitting needle.

If you do knit stitches every row you get garter stitch where you get purl bumps on both sides and if you alternate knit and purl rows you get stockinette stitch where you get one smooth side and one bumpy. Then you can do rib stitch which is alternating knit and purl every 1 or 2 stitches

I live in a spanish speaking country and we use the same verb for knit and crochet (tejer) we just say "tejer a crochet" (knit in crochet) or "tejer a dos agujas" (knit with two needles) or just "tejer"so we usually don't have the problem of mixing them up Also I just started learning to knit too and it's been so fun

Knitting is my 'wrists are hurting to much to crochet' craft lol. I do whats called pit knitting which is where you use long needles and hold one of the needles under your arm rather than your hand. Not only is is much much easier on the wrists it's also super fast

As a beginner learn your knit stitch and purl stitch then a fun stitch I learned as a beginner was the hexagon stitch it's fun and simple and it'll teach you how to work with past rows, also Continental is just how you hold working yarn

As a crocheter who then learned knitting as an adult basically, there are only two knitting stitches and then variations on these two and they're all called "different" stitches but they're really not. It's different than crochet in that their are more deviations in crochet. But in knitting the two main stitches are purl and knit. What you did at first was a garter stitch. It's doing the knit stitch on both sides. Stockinette is simply knitting on one side and purling on the other. This is when working flat. When working in the round (a tube), then that's a different story.

You hold your yarn while crocheting the same way I do. I just really learned how to knit this year too. Please check out Continental knitting (holding the working yarn in your LEFT hand and picking the yarn from the left hand/fingers instead of throwing it with the right hand) you may like it better. I did. I can hold the yarn the same way for knitting as I do for crochet.

You and I have a lot in common. I am also a life long crocheter (over 50 years and taught by my grandmother). I hope you will succeed in your endeavor because I have tried so many times to learn to knit, but I fail every time. I don't know if you do Tunisian crochet, but it looks a lot like knitting.

Also keep doing knit stitch first until you definitely get comfortable; then learn purl stitch. Those are pretty much the only two stitches you need to learn and after that it’s just new techniques and alternating them both to create different patterns and designs.

If you learned one is learning the knit stitch as soon as you’re comfortable enough then I’d recommend learning the purl stitch. It’s definitely not as comfortable as a knit stitch and it’s slower but it is nessasary. You also need to learn how to bind off, casting off is another word but the official word is binding off but either way is fine. You only need to switch hands and turn around if your not knitting in the round, if your knitting in the round make sure you have a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the row and then you join the round. You will not switch hands when you are knitting in the round you are only going in one direction. If you are flat knitting without joining in the round then in order for the bumps called purl stitches is to switch hands and turn over and then purl that round and then on the right side you would knit all the stitches. I have learned to knit the English style and prefer that way which is funny because I’ve learned to crotchet first before i learned to knit but i do prefer the English style which you have your yarn on your right hand and then continental is having your yarn in your left hand. I can knit both ways and heard continental is quicker but i still prefer the.english style.

I do both but started with knitting. I have noticed that I am more sore with crochet over knitting but I thought it was because I haven’t been crocheting for a year yet. Also I use bamboo knitting needles instead of plastic ones it slips less for me.
