Chaparral produced some of the craziest racers in history | FOS

Just before #FOS 2023 kicks off, we're digging into the archives for some of our favourite Hill runs and these three Chaparral clips are right up there. The Chaparral 2J fan car is the first up the Hill featuring two engines. One drives the car, the other is a chainsaw unit that creates a reverse hovercraft effect.
The second is the 2F with one of the all-time craziest rear wings. Finally, the 2A at the hands of our very own Duke of Richmond at the wheel.

Jim Hall was a trailblazer in motorsport, not just in his use of wings and front-end aero, but with an automatic transmission in the Chaparral 2A. He was always pushing those engineering limits, and I continue to be thrilled that Goodwood recognizes his achievements!

Oh I totally know what you mean! There's just no feeling like when your Audi R8 LMP1 car gets passed with ease by a 2J on the Opera Paris course in the World Championship.

I was lucky and saw the 2J race at Laguna Seca in CanAm, the other cars would blow by it on the straights, they'd brake and it would go back by them braking incredibly late, if computers were available to run the fan engines (for reliability) it would of been unbeatable. I also saw the 2A at Kent, Wa. and the wing car at Las Vegas. Absolutely my hero as a youth, respect Jim Hall to this day. (his TransAm Camaro's were slick beasts too)

Nothing forgotten about Jim Hall and his legendary creations. An absolute genius and pioneer in getting racecars to new levels of fast around a track. He is a humble guy and imo just isn't credited enough for his racing inventions (aero, wings, active aero and ground effect for instance). I feel that other engineers/designers get a lot of credits for pushing the boundaries, like Chapman or Murray. The latter even putting a list of his most succesful designs (and more) on his latest road car creation... Well, in the end I am glad to see some people don't let their succes get to their head. Jim Hall is one of these persons.

I met Mr. Jim Hall at his Biography Book signing in Midland, recently. It was a fantastic event. The 2J had a Snowmobile engine, not chainsaw.

I wonder what will the engineers react about the called "ground effect" that they created with the 2J, along with the in next years in F1 it'll be called as DRS, also in the same 2J. First as a concept and then in this times the FOS as exhibition, one car uses the ground effect to brake the record of the most quickest time of the entire festival. Also certain companies put an eye into the ground effect concept
