Hi Greg, Thanks very much for the video. You perfectly described how my left side feels when you talked about the chain of muscles! However, I'm a bit confused as my situation seems to be the opposite to your description at the start, but then the rest fits: - Right hip is noticebaly forward and slightly higher - Right shoulder lower than left - Right foot points outwards slightly more than left - Left leg harder to cross than right - Lower back hurts on left side and left hamstring/glute chain feels weak From your description, I'd expect my right side to be the issue, as it's the opposite to the first part of video, but the pain/muscle chain issues are on my left side exclusively. I should mention that I had an issue on the outside of my left foot from running which I was told was down to a leg length discrepency. I was given 1cm inserts in left shoe for this, which seemed to work, but I still feel tight/twisted as you descibe. I'm concerned that my pelvis is the real issue, rather than a leg length discrepency. What are your thoughts? I'd like to try your exercises, but don't want to strengthen the wrong side! Thank you in advance! Pete

Funny to think I "figured it out" today... everything that you are saying; its as if you took all the pain, movement, time and energy. I can feel it as youre talking, I just kept massaging the tight muscles, and exercised "you can only have so much tension in this chain" yeah. I dislocated both my kneecaps because of that, not knowing my pelvis was rotated and those said muscles were practically atrophied from not being used for so long. All the tightness, gone.

Thank you so much for the video! I was recently misdiagnosed with a heel raise that killed me for a month because I happened to have a tight QL on the left side, making my left leg appear shorter (this is after ~7 years with minor lumbar scoliosis with right-leaning curvature); now I'm doing everything I can to try to even back out. For the exercises concentrating one side, which leg would I be lifting and which leg's heel would be digging down into the wall (with a tight left chain / QL)? Thanks again!
@ChaplinPerformance3 жыл бұрын
If the left leg appears shorter, the left lower to mid back is very much pulling the back of the pelvis up (hip hike). In this case you would use the left heel on the wall and practice lifting the right leg. However, you might also find it useful to push the right foot into the wall while in the hip shift position to feel the right leg assisting the base of your spine and upper part of your pelvis/sacrum into the support surface. What you are describing is a situation where left abdominals and right gluteal muscles will be important.
@MrTwinkieeater Жыл бұрын
A really good massage therapist can help with this. If it's gotten to this point, muscles, ligaments, and tendons need work too. Your hips control the balance of everything above and below them. If it's not acute trauma or hereditary, psychotherapy will help also.

A question please Why with Breathing not inhaling when legs is going down away from the core and exhaling whike the leg is going up, it is going with the diaphragm so it corresponds with diaphragmatic movement with breathing, so pl I do appreciate your amazing knowledge and video, but I believe it is better if inhaling with the leg going down and exhaling whil legs is going up, so it is corresponding with her diaphragm.
@ChaplinPerformance Жыл бұрын
I think you could make a case either way! Not sure it will make that huge of a difference. My rationale is to aide in expansion on the right “swing phase” and exhaling upon returning from the swing phase to more of a “stance position” Mid stance = exhaled Early and late stance and swing = more inhaled

I just watched this ! I have had a left lateral tilt with leg discrepancy for about 7 months . By the end of your description my theory on its cause was pretty accurate. Sitting on a kitchen stool hour after hour with my left leg hanging down. Was a two year habit. @ChaplinPerformance3 жыл бұрын
Hamstring exercises but pay attention to getting the obliques to engage and back to relax. Your hamstrings are trying to work as a push off muscle. The glutes are likely inactive because they are already short and cannot shorten further. Check out my video on feeling glutes during a squat and try the left backward hip shift to see if you can engage the glutes on the left better.

@@flame_1462 there are other stretches to stretch the spine. I’m not sure if this helps with scoliosis but pelvic tilt happens majority of the time because you already have scoliosis, there are videos on here on how to fix a scoliosis spine with stretching/exercises but this fixes the tilt itself, no matter what caused the actual tilt and I’m sure it helps the scoliosis to a certain degree. Look up stretches on how to straighten your spine

Hi! I have no idea how i stumbled upon this video but I’m so glad I did! I have had hip pain for the last 3 years since training for my first (and only to-date) half marathon. I am not quite sure if I have a lateral pelvic tilt but I did your exercises to see if they helped and I feel they did. I have seen chiropractors, PTs and no one can quite help me. It is only on my left side and I feel like my left glute and hamstrings are working way harder Than the right and tense up even when I am walking without me noticing. Does this sound like a lateral pelvic tilt? I should add that I constantly have a tingling sensation in my back on the left side right next to my scapula. I also have shoulder crunching when I move it and now have pain in my jaw where I am constantly clenching/overworking my left side without even noticing it. I have for years thought it was just my hips but had no idea where to start…

@@ChaplinPerformance Hi! I have a tight hip, butt, knee, and foot pain all on my left side. For a long time I thought it was general APT but I've noticed that I put most of my body weight on my left side which may mean I have a LPT. my collar bone also does not look straight so im guessing my left side is working to hard and my right side needs to be more activated. Does this sound right?

This was fantastic, described the issues I've been struggling with absolutely perfectly. Haven't been able to find anything nearly as informative or complete. Is there a chance this tilt has increased (or created) hip impingements, and possibly led to a torn labrum? I feel pinching on the side with my left hip and towards the front with my right hip. I play golf quite a bit so I'm also twisting towards that left side somewhat violently I guess which obviously doesn't help, but over time my left hip has gotten to the point where certain movements cause intense pain. One movement is trying to cross my leg, like you mentioned. I cannot put my left foot on top of my right knee at all, the pain is unbearable and it just won't move. I can do it if I use my hands to put it up there but not on its own. I tried self-testing some of the hip labral tear tests I've seen, and they seem to confirm, but I obviously don't know for sure. Haven't wanted to go get tested b/c I just can't imagine PT will help if it is torn and I'm not sure surgery makes sense. Thank you!
@ChaplinPerformance3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thanks for your comment and watching the video. What you have going on is likely an oblique axis orientation to the right, which as oriented your left hip in a position that is going to make it hard to achieve the necessary external rotation without reinforcing the compensatory strategy. Activities that use the right to push back and to the left will be helpful. A torn labrum in and of itself does not preclude you from having success with PT or training.

This is a fantastic video. I wanted to ask you about a possible mistake/question that I have in the video, that really makes me think. At around 1:37 you say that in this case it is easier to cross your right leg than your left in external rotation. I am not an expert at all but, shouldn't it be the other way around? I mean, if the pelvis shifts to the right and the left hip is pushed forward, shouldn't it be easier to cross your left leg in external rotation?
@ChaplinPerformance3 жыл бұрын
Hi there. The left hip might be easier to cross in a more neutral pelvic orientation given a similar underlying pattern of muscular activity. However, when testing hip external rotation, if the body is oriented right, the hip socket on the right is pointing into a position where external rotation will be accessible and the lumbar spine is moving towards flexion which will also increase ER measures. With a push from the top of the left as described in this video, the left hip is pushed forward, the ER muscles on become oriented to perform IR and poorly positioned to perform ER. Also, the limitation in spinal flexion will also limit ER measure on the left.

Thanks so much for this video! I read through some of the comments - i'm still not sure if I'm supposed to target the side of my pelvis that's hiked, or do the exercises equally on both sides to bring balance? Thanks.
@ChaplinPerformance2 жыл бұрын
Doing both sides is never a bad idea! With unilateral (one sided) activities, you will get slightly different effects on either side. While this is meant to be a guide of just doing this side, at the end of the day the body needs to be able to produce mechanics on both sides of the body during walking and other upright activities, so either just this side or if you aren’t sure which side, you can just do both!

I’m dealing with my fourth episode of lateral tilt in 18 months. Each time was excruciating. First time it lasted three weeks. Second occasion lasted three days after Dr. gave me anti-inflammatories. My third occasion lasted two months. This is such a horrible situation to be in. I’m only 43 years old, but feel much older and I know I shouldn’t.
@blueskiesnm5412 Жыл бұрын
uhmm...I have Ehler Danlos so I deal with this constantly since my 30s (after 2 preganancy in bed) Don't do meds. Find a PT who does maunuel work and neuromuscular retaining. If something shuts down and quits working everything is pulled out whacky. Like glute or lower abs amnesia. The part of you feeling old reminded me of what folks with EDS say.
@josiecamilo709811 ай бұрын
It only gets worse if you sit a lot. I've had it for years and it is horrible but there are people that wish they had this problem and not something worse. Try different things supposedly it's not permanent. I'm using my heating pad on my back to loosen the QL muscles and going to start these exercises because we can't rely on anyone else to fix us. We have to do the work. Also accommodating your sitting position I have bucket seats in my car found out sitting on a bolster keeps the pelvis neutral. Keeping hips above knees no sitting low to the ground. Comfortable stools are a good idea. Go get weekly massages if possible. Take vitamins and natural anti-inflammatory. Try to stay strong and pray 🙏 the body went into protective mode to protect itself so remaining calm and positive is important. Seems that diaphragm breathing plays a big role as well as a tight QL. For the tight QL there is heat therapy creams like Mountain Ice or tiger balm or salom paz patches that prevent muscle spasms.

I have an extremely bad back; DDD, stenosis, arthritis and I'm also told that I have 'obliquity' in my hip. Is that the same thing as pelvic tilt? On the xray it only looks very slightly higher on the right side. Doc thinks I should do something about saying even if it's only a millimeter higher it can be a problem. Your feelings?
@ChaplinPerformance Жыл бұрын
A milliliter pelvic obliquity on x-ray is just a snapshot of your back in time. This has very little to do with movement capabilities. Work on getting better at moving. An x ray will never be able to show you how you move

Hello, thank you for your work, I would like to ask a question: can there be a Left AIC Pattern if the left hip is higher and the right shoulder is higher?
@ChaplinPerformance2 жыл бұрын
Yes it is not the typical left AIC right BC, per se, but it would be considered that there is an additional layer of compensation. This is not how I conceptualize it but likely how a “PRI purist” would look at it. In fact, I rarely think about movement or posture in terms of the commonly described PRI patterns.

My hip is a tad out of place. Is this why I hurt my lower back? The hip is compensating my knee I had surgery on. My exercises aggravate back pain.
@ChaplinPerformance2 жыл бұрын
This is likely more of a pain-related issue. If you didn’t get full motion back in the knee or don’t feel safe loading that side of your body, you will be more likely to experience pain in multiple areas

@ChaplinPerformance Жыл бұрын
Usually not in and of itself. Remember that a hip hike/lateral pelvic tilt is usually a force production strategy and/or an issue of positional sense. Walking up and down stairs won’t likely be a solution to their of these issues, at least not in isolation
