Okay this might sound strange but there’s a point to it: The crowd singing with Chappell at 1:18 reminds me heavily of Contemporary Christian Music. If you grew up in a church like I did, moments where it’s just vocals, synth, and the congregation singing together were frequent. There’s just something about so many people singing together that touches the soul. Now, this is heavily queer coded - for fucks sake it’s Chappell Roan singing Lady Gaga - but it has the same effect. And it’s beautiful because we know there’s gotta be at least some in the audience with church hurt, but this is their moment to sing. This is the voice that we’ve found saying “you may shun me from your congregation, from your community, but I’ve found my own people and, goddamn you, I WILL sing.”
