Dave is very clear, throughout the special, that he's only ever talking to and about White people. This special is about Dave's dislike of "White minorities" (Women, LGBTQ+, etc) often picking their Whiteness over their minority status & of White minorities weaponizing their minority status as it suits them. They will play victim & use their minority status to attack a powerful poc while inversely using their Whiteness to attack disempowered poc (ex Calling Cops, Social Exclusion, Voting against our common interests, etc). The final 10mins clarify the goal of this special. Dave quotes Daphne "punching down on someone requires you to think less of them." Then using that as a call back he pleas w/ White minorities to stop "punching down" on poc. Perfect final note that encapsulated this special.

A root cause of the backlash he gets seems to come from the fact that Chappelle has elevated his craft from a comic telling funny stories to a performance artist with a highly curated collection of work with specific objectives toward directing audience responses (beyond simply laughing). To truly appreciate his work requires the audience to be okay with questioning themselves, their beliefs, the reasons they are already angry before he even says a word. He addresses our "brittleness" (as he calls it) head on, knowing there will be backlash precisely because of that brittleness. He references it multiple times, saying "It's gonna get worse" and "I'm going all the way," signaling to us that he's taking us somewhere uncomfortable. And then he asks us to sit in our discomfort, question it, and tests whether we can extend the empathy we all want for ourselves to the very person who made us uncomfortable. That's the main takeaway from this piece, in my opinion. Empathy for human experience has to go both ways, not just toward the marginalized. He purposefully marginalizes his entire audience and then asks them to recognize the validity of his own human experience, thereby testing the limits of our empathy. Based on the reviews I've read, it seems many of us have yet again failed that test. This backlash proves his point, again, that there is no enlightenment in being brittle when that brittleness limits empathy for others - including someone you think is "punching down" on you.

The not feeling protected is exactly the way I feel on my job, especially being an unapologetically black man. I’ve seen black people get denied promotions, lose jobs, etc. for saying things, not saying things, doing things, and not doing things that mirror other communities at my institution and department, have been given grace for consistently.

Dave is the 🐐 of stand up And I watched Pryor and murphy No one has ever had this level of skill on a stage to be able to make the grotesque aspects of humanity hilarious He makes u question your ability to laugh at some of this painful as a human being with any level of empathy while stilll not being able to not laugh all while making juxtapositions that can make the world see itself more honestly for the greater good

@@theconsciousobserver6829 i say first half was boring second half was funny & genius. He’s more so a storyteller that tells dry humor why getting his point across. My father, an ex boxer used to tell me about the GOAT Afro- American Muhammad Ali, Cassius Clay. I asked him why he had two names and my father told that because of racism in America they wouldn’t recognize him as Ali. Dave is so right, how easily they accept Bruce as Caitlyn but not Cassius as Ali.

@str8legj2 жыл бұрын
You can’t cancel Dave. The minute he walked away from Comedy Central and that $50M he showed everyone the path. These big corporations think they can control people with money so you will do whatever they say. If not, they will try and ruin you and make you come back begging. Dave walked away and gave them a big F U! He went and lived his life for over a decade and came back and instantly got the bag on his terms. Obviously, he has Netflix but he could still go out on his own with no backing but his own and he would still kill it. Not to mention, how he spoke out and got his money back on Chappelle Show re-runs recently. Chappelle = Legend

Chappelle won't be cancelled bc (1) he's never physically hurt anyone, unlike R Kelly & Cosby, (2) he can do his stand-up with no production companies, so he can't be cancelled by pressuring other ppl, (3) he'll never lose his core audience over his jokes being 'offensive' bc he does not say things without thought
@worth2worthnation2 жыл бұрын
You are so right: Chappelle created the narrative and discourse, and he explained in narrative and discourse, to stir narrative and discourse. And so far so good.

There is no backlash that matters because Chapelle doesn't care. He's rich, content, and doesn't need corporations. There will be no apology. Hell, I'd be surprised if he even acknowledges the "backlash..."
