Guys you got to remember that a practice amp under 100 quid will be played in a bedroom quietly enough so parents / room mates cannot hear in the next room, I dont know why you are banging on about who's is loudest. You should have put them on volume 1 and see who's has the best sound and tones at low volume.

One of our old guitarists used a Focusrite into Amplitude into the PA. It sounded fine. Another one played a Pocket Pod into the PA. It sounded fine. Current one plays a Zoom Something.3 into a clean amp or just the PA live. That sounds fine too. My theory which is mine is that if there's a PA anyway then modelling will be fine. My other theory which is also mine is if you can stretch to a Boss Katana 50 then your life will still be better.

I have a soft spot for the MG series because of a little MG10 that I used to make a bee-line for at my lessons. It was so easy to get the right tone for what I was playing and used to sound much better than the bigger amps they had. For a Les Paul type guitar it used to sound pretty ok even when fairly loud. Just bought a MG15 for my Dad (who is a beginner - BTW I am >50) and its pretty good when played at room volumes. The sound gets worse when loud like most cheap amps. What did surprise me was how big it is physically - much bigger than the MG10 and wider and taller (just) than the Code 25. Its not as discrete as the old MG10!

Totally agree. Your first guitar shouldn't be a really nice one, it should be an ok one that's not complete garbage but one that you still like. That way when you finally get your dream guitar (I recently got mine- a PRS S2 satin that I love dearly), it'll mean the world to you & you really appreciate it. Plus a lot of beginners don't stick with it so that expensive gear will end up being a waste of money.

Very useful comparison. I absolutely agree with the microphone choice. The room acoustic is a serious consideration at these sort of volume levels. Very interesting because this is exactly where I was 3 months ago (except I'm 63 and not 15). I bought the Marshall MG15CFX which costs a wee bit more but adds chorus, phaser, flanger, delay and octave fx as well as the reverb on the subject combo and takes the useful optional footcontroller (PEDL-90008). There is also the MG15CF which doesn't have fx or reverb and is a wee bit cheaper than the MG15CFR. I totally agree that the clean channel gives a lovely sound. Maybe it's because the crunch, od-1 and od-2 are somehow less satisfying, as Rob says, that I did keep hankering after a modelling amp. So I now have a Marshall CODE 50 as well (bought from Anderton's - great deal- thanks). So, should I have taken the Orange instead of the MG15? A very difficult choice. I'll probably stay with what I have for the foreseeable future. My instrument is an Epiphone G-400 PRO.

But tbh Im not a big fan of the marshall mg series and I love marshall amps but if you were to go marshall I reckon its worth saving more for the dsl range at least :)

As of right now my practice setup is a Fender Champ 5F1 (Joyo Sweet Baby) with a 12AX7, 6V6, and 5Y3 tube compliment and a Celestion Eight-15 speaker (british voiced speaker). I get my drive from an Xotic SL Drive which is a Marshall Super Lead voiced pedal. When you get the amp just at the edge of breakup and engage the pedal it just starts to overdrive in such a natural and smooth way, but not farty or spitty like the champ usually is when cranked, and I think with that British voiced speaker and the Marshall in a box pedal make it sound like a tiny version of a Marshall amp on 10. It's very inspiring to play unlike most solid state/ transistor amps and even modeling rigs. The natural compression from the power tube and the sag from the tube rectifier really feel like a power amp that's working hard. A very interesting little setup that I think any tube amp lover, especially in a rock context, would love. Also the cleans are amazing, its a tube Fender amp. Then when I want the 5F1 Champ sound I just crank it without a pedal and that is awesome too, reminds me of a lot of some Zeppelin recordings. I mean, just look up how many albums were recorded with a Fender Champ on full tilt. Tiny tube amps cranked can give some awesome tones.

As another "budget" video, I'd love to see you review some of the cheaper-end pedals (Hotone, Tone City, etc) alongside these amps. Both to look into what affordable pedals sound good and to see how versatile these affordable amps are when adding pedals into the mix. It would also be interesting to see such a review using sub-£200 guitars, maybe even sub-£150, to get a good idea of what effect pedals can have on a complete starter practice rig. Also then maybe, just for comparison, what the same pedal (and guitar) setup would sound like through higher-end amp. As knowing what cheaper pedals, if any, still work well when you start to upgrade the rest of your gear can be useful form a value perspective.

I'd love to see them do this. You actually need single coils since he played a Mosrite with a DM FS1. I always thought he used humbuckers since photos show his guitar had a humbucker in the neck but he had it disconnected & never used it. He never used effects, just a tuner. I'd go with a cheap Marshall and add either an overdrive, micro amp boost, or something like a Marshall Jackhammer to tweak the sound further. You don't want fuzz or distortion, you need a cranked Marshall with the gain set to low or medium. His sound is actually fairly clean, just super loud.

After 45 years - I’ve just bought my first real amp… the first being my old, original MicroCube. And the one I went for was the Orange Crush 20RT; a week after getting it, I played a few numbers - country and blues in a village hall and I had to wind it down to no more than 30% and the guitar was barely opened up! The Orange Crush amps are completely underestimated by everyone - hells - I’d love a fender valve job… but I’ve carried memories of Orange clean tones since I was a student back in Liverpool - and now with a modern Orange… I can let the fender idea go….

My first amp was a Marshall mg10 from around 2004. A little while later I got an mg15 with the digital effects in it and that thing sounded awful. They changed something in the drive sound that made it really bad. Perfect, unplug the speaker cab, you have quite a portable 15 watt amp. With the cab, 25 decently loud watts. The best solid state clean sound in the business and a reasonably usable overdrive channel. 8 5" speakers give a richness to the sound with a surprising amount of depth. I agree with Rob on this one: out of those three I'd get the Katana because it sounded the best. If your budget is 100 quid you're almost certainly a beginner, and you're going to be doing a lot more practicing in your bedroom with a backing track or a click than playing with a band. If "needs to play in a beginner garage band" is a requirement, I wouldn't buy or recommend an amp at this price point, because you're just going to be disappointed. Save up a bit more and get something like a Katana 50. If I *HAD* to pick one of these for a garage band requirement (with no PA), I'd pick the Orange. Its volume and mids would give you the best chance of being heard with drums and bass. No chance with the Katana mini (unless you have a PA, in which case the Katana mini would be my choice). Probably no chance with the Marshall, either. And the Marshall sounded like crap. Absolutely terrible with the Fender, and moderately terrible with the Chapman.

These amps all sound great for the price, the only thing that lets them down is the small speaker they come with. The next christmas present should be a 2x12 speaker cab instead of an amp upgrade. Any amp can be easily modded to hook up to a cab. I have a Marshall MG10, for mucking around and testing guitar mods, and when I connect it to the cab it sounds huge, but I don't use the built in gain channel. Like Rob said it makes a great pedal platform when using the clean channel. I also like using the MG10 to see how pedals react with it compared to my DSL40c. If I hook up the tele to the MG10, on clean channel, with the Wampler triple wreck pedal set to moderate gain level and boost it with the BOSS SD-1 I get Jimmy Page tone. Somehow the distortion is decreased but all the goodness gets boosted. If I try this on the DSL40c I just get the horrible sound of two mismatched gain pedals stacked together?

Marshall MG15CFX is good. 4 channels, 4 pedals, reverb, headphone and aux, pretty loud too.

I think I would ave up a bit more or talk the parents in on the Crush 20rt. I love my 35rt and it’s perfect for bedroom or small garage band stuff. It also takes pedals very well.

The Fender Acoustasonic 15watt is surprisingly good with an electric guitar and it’s $99.99. I use it with my fender Mexican HSS strat and I can easily play over a drummer.

I am from another universe apparently, where I was a paperboy, cleaned and washed postal vans and filled the shelves of a supermarket. So I thought of how many hours of work my amp would cost. Feels different.

An extra few £ (£127) would get a Blackstar ID:Core 20w V2. I think it would be great in a video like this.

Quite funny watching an Andertons video from 2010, to see how much has changed. Not just Chappers hair style

If it is for practise, head on over to ebay and look for a decent set of closed back headphones a POD, POD UX2, or THR5 and have so much better tone.

Kinda agree with Rob. I played through an MG series Marshall once before and it sounded okay-ish clean but its distorted channel sounded unforgivably bad. Even then when I knew jack shit about tone and amps i was just like "ohh noo... this is bad"

Vox Pathfinder 10!!! Best small cheap amp ever.

The fact is, if you're buying an amp... or a guitar... or frankly any musical instrument for £100 or less, you buy used. But it was cool to see you can actually get something 'alright' brand new for that price!

I like the room sound better than micking the amps individually.

In my setting I would have gone for the Boss Katana Mini. Well... Current home bedroom setting. In my youth I had a lame 80's Peavey practice amp. Though I loved those days, still. I think a young kid learning guitar should experience their parents telling them to turn it down & to experience a tone that isn't the greatest. Rather you get close to the amp in low volume or try to EQ it to make it sound the best, you're getting personal with it. You learn guitar but at the same time you learn what to look for in future equipment for the best sound. Boss Katana Mini is good for the later years when you're intentionally keeping it down for the kid(s) sleeping or taking it anywhere to show your mates a song idea & such.

I rock that Marshall amp. Looking for a Cab and Head though. Blackstar maybe.

I love orange's crush series, I'm sad I traded mine in and plan on getting another some day. But they tend to sound bad on KZbin. Play one in person before you judge them.

I wanted to like the Katana Mini, but for me it just wasn't practical. The gain channel sounds great, but I couldn't get a clean sound out of it. Even with the volume turned all the way up I had to have the gain turned up to around 11 o'clock to get any sound out of the amp at all on the clean setting. I thought something was wrong with it so I sent it back. The second one did the same thing so I called tech support. The agent I spoke with was great. He got one out and tested it, but got the same results. He was a little surprised himself how much gain had to be added to get a usable "clean" volume. So I returned the amp. None of my other amps are close to that, even other smaller Roland/Boss amps. May not be an issue for some, but I occasionally like a nice clean tone.

Good advert for orange, and shows how well they've gone about producing a little amp that works the way amps used to and should do. The Boss to me sounded Shite. The Marshall was okay and it had a nice reverb. I would take the Orange any day of the week. Please do the same for Bass amps, but can almost guarantee Orange will do well.

Interesting, I still keep my ol VOX pathfinder 15r. But I agree a good loud clean amp with a peddle may be the way to go.

Got the Orange Crush 12 two years ago. I didn't see you demonstrating the cleans on the orange. If you crank the clean, remove the drive, and put some dirt pedals in front, it sounds really good. Drive on the amp kinda sucks, and it sounds horrible through the headphone socket. I only use it to add some volume. The speaker is also crappy at high volumes, but I don't care, I only use it my bedroom.
@palethorn7 жыл бұрын
Just one note. If you're going to use it at the band practice, I would seriously consider swapping that speaker. Maybe put a larger one.
@NextDefault7 жыл бұрын
I agree the drive isnt the greatest sound (i have the crush 35) and the headphone out sounds pretty poor... that being said, a low drive is really nice, and the clean takes pedals really well... As a side note, if you have the 35, and if you insist on recording DI from the amp, use the fx loop line out... it sounds much better than the emulated line out

I actually have the MG15CFR and it sounds exactly like that regardless of whether I play my cheap as chips squire or the custom shop Les Paul, and I don't use the gain channel, so definitely a shout there Chappers :) My question is when it's time to move on from the garage band, what should you get after this? Do you model, valve, or save up and go big, head / cab or combo. Next video for some time in the future.

i'd like to hear a Tube Screamer into the Marshall clean channel, or any of these amps actually. That's kinda what i had going on in the basement in '85... although in my case it was a Boss DS1 into a Roland Cube 40. --- and i'd like to add that after years of gigging i still do pub gigs where i use the small cheap stuff. Practise amps are for always, not just for Christmas.

Katana sounded the best over all. Marshall sounded smoother. Orange sounded the most aggressive IMO. I owned a Crush many, many years ago and they're actually quite good. :)

Rob didn’t start playing till he was 16 ? Eh? that’s the most inspirational thing I’ve e ever heard ....he’s sooo good and he obviously didn’t have rich parents who got him a les Paul and a Marshall stack and lessons with Eddie van Blackmore when he was 5.....
