I think the fact that Dumbledore is an accomplished legilimens is so overlooked. Perhaps because it comes up so much later in the series (Order?) and perhaps not many people know he is so powerful in that realm. And maybe playing an “old fool” to others is advantageous for him. But he’s far from foolish. To me, that’s why he trusts so completely. He KNOWS he can trust them (Hagrid, Snape). He can see it.

Several years ago I rented a flat in Paris on rue Montmorency. Across the street and three doors down was a house that was once owned by Niolas Flamel. The building is now a restaurant and I dined there several times so I could admire the architecture and let my imagination run wild. The food was good too. Unfortunately, I never ran across Monsieur Flamel or his wife Perenel. At least not to recognise either of them if they were around.

Having read/listened to these books maybe 50 times, and with no one in my own life with whom to discuss them, this channel has been hugely satisfying to hear you all talk about things that I've had in my mind for years. Also, new ideas like McGonagall just skipping school that day. Never occurred to me before. It's crazy that we can keep finding new things after all this time.

What I'd assume is that Dumbledore was not at the school or left instantly once he knew, he sent a message to Hagrid with instructions and addresses, as Hagrid is leaving, McGonagall asks him about Dumbledore and Hagrid says "oh he said he'd meet me up at this place", McGonagall goes straight to privet drive, Hagrid goes to Godric's Hollow, McGonagall apparates, so she's there immediately, Hagrid "cannot" use magic, so he gets to each place slowly and like, i have no idea where those places are in real life, so I'm very much okay with assuming it would take a long time to travel to Hogwarts to Harry to the Dursleys? Seems like a lot of mileage for one day.
@viking_2112

Not sure where godrics hollow is but hagrid mentions flying over Bristol which is just below whales and directly across from London I'd guess it's north of that, probably around whales or the midlands although it could be Yorkshire as we do have some picturesque villages like godrics hollow not to far from where I live in york. hogwarts is up in the Scottish Highlands so that's really high up in the UK and little winging is in Surrey which is just south of London. Given we know it takes a good 7 hour train journey from London to hogwarts, it's feesable that it would take hagrid quite a while as it's like a 5 hour journey from the Highlands to around where i think godrics hollow is then it's quiet a long car drive from Yorkshire down to surrey so it does line up that something like that would have happened

Actually bonfire night would not be the next week, it would be that Friday. Love the set and the reading! Bathilda Bagshot knew where the Potter’s were. Lily’s letter mentions she came over and was telling them stories about Dumbledore. There were other magical families that lived in Godric’s Hollow, they would have noticed the house blown up. Hagrid was the one who took Harry from the house. Sirius asked Hagrid to give Harry to him, not the other way around.

I really liked the discussion about the boy who lived - the boy who loved. I always pictured a great last chapter name to also be a one letter change but slightly different - the boy who lives. How the entire series is kinda about this fact that he lived you know he survived and he needs to keep surviving till the right moment only to then have lived again. With the last chapter finally ending this cycle and harry getting to truly live and continue to live the rest of his life for himself as the boy who lives.

I have a theory that Hogwarts was closed during this chapter because YKW was creating such an unsafe environment that children were kept home. That's also why every year after Harry's first year there are more and more children on the train- families started having children again after YKW's fall, so there are more and more kids on the train.

With Mcgonagall's quote "They're not completely stupid," can be taken a couple ways though. "They're not COMPLETELY stupid," implies a bias against muggles, but "They're not completely STUPID," could be seen as a condemnation of said bias held by most wizards. I wonder if the day "our story starts" could be November 3rd. Maybe Hagrid took Harry to Hogwarts and Madame Pomfrey for the cut on his head, then went drinking and talked about the "poor little mite" being orphaned in the pub. Celebrating Voldemort being gone and talking as Hagrid does. Dumbledore would be busy confirming Voldemort's demise, or lack thereof, and maybe hadn't been at Hogwarts those days which is why Mcgonagall went to find him because she wouldn't believe it until she heard it from him. That also gives Sirius time to track down Peter and get thrown in Azkaban so that putting Harry with Petunia wouldn't be counted as kidnapping since Sirius was his godfather.

11:54 the Dursley’s being extra nosey to neighbors and keeping an eye on oddly dressed people could be attributed to them being weary of wizards coming after Harry, to either get him to hogwarts or kill him. Petunia would have known exactly what happened to her sister, she just tells Harry a lie. Petunia probably knew about Voldemort or at least knew it was very bad wizards that killed her sister and tried to kill Harry.

I would presume everyone knows what happened due to magical investigation - once Godric's Hollow realises, the Ministry is called, they perform some kind of spell like Newt does in CoG with the golden smoke and licking the ground - that along with James and Lily's bodies, plus knowledge that they were hiding from Voldemort means they could figure out everything they needed to know. As for Tom Riddle - he graduates in '44, goes to work for Borgin and Burkes. Dumbledore is headmaster by between '65 and '71, and his visit to Hepzibah is ten years before that, so he works at Borgin and Burkes for 11-16 years. Then after killing Hepzibah, he disappears for a while, doing evil things that Dumbledore hears about, presumable including actually finding the Diadem, since he knows it's location but hasn't found the time to get it yet. By this time he already has a following, he comes back to Hogwarts to ask for a teaching position, and Dumbledore rejects him. He leaves, hiding the Diadem on his way out. Having found 3 of 4 Founders relics, he only needs to sword, which he can't get unless a Gryffindor pulls it for him. So, he starts his attack on the Wizarding World, in 1970. Also I'm actually trying to write a Founders Series right now! It was inspired by SCB's ideas of an 8 season epic tv show, and while I haven't written much I have done a lot of planning for accuracy and consistency

I actually did recognize Sirius Black's name when I first read it in Prisoner of Azkaban. The conclusion that I came to was that Sirius must have had some type of Vader complex where he wanted to kill Voldemort and came to check to see if Harry had truly killed Voldemort.

I recognised the name too because I read the first three books in a couple of months or so but I read very fast as well and get really invested when I read something for the first time. So I thought it was interesting that Name had appeared before but didn't spend many thoughts about it.

I was reading the first book again in prep for this series, but in chapter one I think the thing that really caught my attention most: "Yeah," said Hagrid in a very muffled voice, "I'll be takin' Sirius his bike back. G'night, Professor McGonagall -- Professor Dumbledore, sir." Why did Dumbledore let Hagrid try to return to Sirius Black when at this point they would have realized that Sirius was actually the person who indirectly killed the Potters and killed all those muggles. Either he already knew Sirius was good and probably should have done more to prove his innocence.. or he should have told Hagrid that he shouldn't go find him.

See I don't think it's a plot hole, per se. While I don't think JK intended this, it still adds to my theory about Dumbledore. He's always saying "greater good", what if he knew that Sirius wasn't the secretkeeper because he had actually planted the seeds to get Sirius to have them use Peter. Dumbledore was behind the whole fidelious charm plan, yet somehow Sirius thinks that the location could be tortured out of him when we know that the charm doesn't work that way? The Potters don't make themselves the secret keeper even though we know that's an option? Dumbledore knew that Harry or Neville were destined to take down Voldemort... The Order was losing the war... So Dumbledore realizes that he has to setup the two families to have just enough security to not think it's a trap but with holes so Voldemort could make his move and setup his own downfall. I know people think this isn't the Dumbledore they know... But this is exactly the Dumbledore they know. This was basically his plan around Harry. He didn't know Harry was going to likely survive this until Goblet.

Love that y’all are doing this!! For some reason, I thought we were going to read the chapters together and break them down, but I actually do love what y’all are doing. I’ve been obsessed with Harry Potter since I was a child. My grandmother got me the first book before any of the movies came out and I never read it. But my mom took me to see the first movie and at that moment, I knew I wanted to read the books. I had to retire my very first set in 2023 bc the binding was falling off of all of them due to how many times they had been read, and by extension, how much they had been loved. I still have them in my China hutch, but I bought the hardbacks to read instead in 2023 and reread the whole series. I also started my Harry Potter collection to fill my China hutch. Ahhhh I’m so excited how much y’all cover this series.

Does anyone else find it mean how JK Rowling and Mcgonagal talk about Dudley? “He’s screaming for sweets”. He’s 16 months old. “He said Shan’t/Won’t. That somehow makes him an evil toddler”.
@AliAngelpie
@AliAngelpie Жыл бұрын
I agree that it is demeaning, but I think Rowling is comparing Dudley and Harry. Dudley is spoiled rotten which results in narcissistic and bullying behavior while Harry is kind and nervous, wanting to know more about his parents and life, but forced to walk around eggshells with his relatives and endure their cruel treatment. It doesn’t make him bitter or a bully, he does have a lot of sass, but he’s inherited his mother’s warmth and generosity, choosing Ron and Hermione over the more elite students
@killerfudgetastic
@killerfudgetastic Жыл бұрын
I think it’s less about the child and more about the fact that the parents appear to approve of the behavior. Like, if I remember correctly Vernon literally chuckles at Dudley throwing a tantrum and affectionately calls him “little tyke”. If the parent doesn’t have a problem with the behavior, and not only doesn’t try to prevent it but in fact encourages it, the behavior is unlikely to go away, which is what we see happen.

One thing I find kind of amusing in this chapter is when Mr. Dursley sees the people in cloaks and he thinks "The getups you saw on young people!" Mr. Dursley is probably in his twenties here, and he's already developed this curmudgeonly attitude. It's just one of those things I didn't think about as a kid, since I just thought of him as "an adult", and it didn't occur to me that he isn't that old himself.

39:00 Does being under the Imperius curse keep them from observing/remembering the world? I don't remember that being an effect. Either way, unless the Death Eaters were all sneaking around casting Imperio, they'd all be arrested pretty quickly.

When we get a description of Harry under the curse, he seems to be able to notice the space around him, but find it hard to focus on it. I believe it’s a bit different in the graveyard after he’s has training, but it’s been years since I’ve read the books. So it might depend on the strength of the charm and how able the charmed is to resist.

There we go!! HERE'S Chapter 1!! Yesterday was interesting . . . With Chapter 3 being released (accidentally?) early . . . 🤣 I, of course, watched it yesterday, anyway, because I was JUST so excited for this!! 😃🤩 The set looks absolutely AMAZING, btw!! "THIS 'SET' IS AMAZIIINNNGGG"; like if you've been a fan of SCB for THAT long to get that joke!! 😂 Also, here's a video idea for the "main" channel that I JUST thought of listening to this on Apple Podcast this morning before this vid was released, actually: What do you think the muggles living IN Godric's Hallow think who Godric is?? 😅 Because, we the reader of course know who Godric is, but WHO do you think the muggle think he is?? You could just TOTALLY make up a whole story about a "muggle" Godric!! 🤣 Just a thought . . . 😉 Also, here's a "What If" question for you: What If Voldemort HAD been expelled instead of Hadgrid? Like what if Dumbledore HAD manage to convince the Headmaster then (Dipet, I think?) that Voldemort was ACTAULLY the one who opened the Chamber? Would Voldemort have became as dangerous & as powerful then?? 🤔 "Also, also, actually, actually," she DOESN'T say that line in the movie when Dumbledore says, "I should have known it was you, Professor . . . " Just something to point out . . . 😉 And also you do NOT have hardcovers, Brothers!! I can CLEARLY see they're both paperback copies!! YOU LIE!! JK!!! 😂 Also, as far as language goes, Ben IS correct in that the words for "Papa" & "Mama" ARE very similar in other languages because those are the 1st syllables are baby makes, along with "Ba", too! So good guess, Ben! 😊👍🏻 Also, "Fa" & "Mo" are other fairly common ones in all languages, I think, as in "Father" & "Mother". Don't exactly know where English gets the syllable for "Da" as in "Dada" or "Daddy" because as far as I know, English seems to be the only language to call "Dad" dad . . . Most other languages use either "Pa" or "Ba" as the first syllables for "Dad", but I COULD be wrong in that . . . 🤔 So there ya go; a short linguist lesson for you from my child development class in college!! ☺

The animagus moment from book 3 was brilliantly placed, since it reminds the reader that animagi exist, so when you find out Sirius is one, you aren't like "what's that?" and could have potentially figured out the beetle from book 4. I sometimes wonder if the books had been released like chapter by chapter with forced pauses between if I'd have enjoyed the books differently, and been able to figure out the plot twists through the books. As a kid, I obviously zoomed through the books in 1-2 days when they were released lol. I wish I could re-read them for the first time again.
