Regarding the muggle clothing vs wizards robes....I would like to set forth a real world example of India. My grandmother would wear saris at all times....she had everyday saris, festive saris, all sorts. This would, I suppose, be like wizard robes. To our generation, that garment seems really complex to wear, and I will do it only during a wedding or some such festive occasion, when in everyday life, I usually just stick to jeans, and tops and such "muggle" clothing. My grandma would always be perplexed about the 'complexity' of the "young generation's" clothing because it requires so many garments, whereas a Sari is literally just a long piece of cloth. I hope this clears it up a little bit. Just wizards who are old fashioned feel more comfortable, and understand wizarding clothes much better than muggle clothes which can be a bit complicated for them, and vice versa.

"they don't want the fire" that's exactly why Mr Weasley would Disapparate afterwards. So he can fix the fireplace, AND the boarded part with the electric fire.
@mrgreataukАй бұрын
Yet again its funny to see how normal British things from the 90's / 2000's are lost in the Atlantic now! It was quite common for old fireplaces to blocked up and have an electric fire (think an ugly electric bar heater, nothing fancy, the fake coal fire mentioned in this chapter is a bit more upmarket) attached in front of them. Actually removing the chimney brickwork and lining etc is a big job so mostly unused fireplaces were just blocked up rather than removed. Most domestic fireplaces were pretty small, so there wouldn't be room to put an electric heater actually in the fireplace itself.
@gileswood7452Ай бұрын

50:43 - I had thought that the fireplace was a regular wood burning or gas one in Philosopher's Stone; as it had a working chimney for the Hogwarts letters to utilize when the mail slot had been boarded up. Now, paranoid (well perhaps more than usual) the Dursleys had boarded it up, and placed an electric one in front of it. Thus, when Aurther blew his way through the boards the "electric fire" that had been in front of the boards was shot across the room.

I believe the reason the kids had to leave first and Arthur had to disapperate, is because after he repaired the wall, the fireplace would be covered up by the electric one again and he wouldn’t be able to use it. Which is also why he couldn’t repair it until after the kids had used it to leave.

To answer the Percy Jackson, as someone from South Africa: Yep, it'd quite whimsical to read a book about someone travelling across America! I do know Dr. Pepper, but I saw it AFTER reading those books, so I get the experience of seeing an American brand and thinking "that's the Percy Jackson thing!". Also, most of my understanding of American geography and landmarks come from those books. Later Heroes of Olympus books and The Kane Chronicles un the same universe go international, so there's some of that foreign wonder to be had as Americans. Plus the Magnus Chase books usually take place in Fantasy worlds.

Let me explain the fireplace situation for you guys. (Hope this helps) Vernon boarded the fireplace in year one because of the letters from hogwarts. The eclectic fire is standing in front of the boarded up fireplace, probably touching it or standing very near to it so it shot forward. Arthur then says he’ll disappirate because he plans to start the fire and then get the boys through. He will then fix the house and board up the fire again and dissapirate. This doesn’t really work and he just goes through the fire, maybe the house is still broken then 😂😂😂😂.

The electric fire and divided rooms come from older houses use to divide rooms to save on heating as you would use a coal fire that changed alot with central heating gas boilers and the coal fireplace became a way for heat to escape so it was plaster boarded up and replaced with fake fires for the looks

I've got a small space heater that has lights in the front that glow like flames and I'm maybe theirs is something similar.

A drinking game for listening to the podcast: each time Ben or J says “let’s see here” you take a shot.

42:25 my thought about the twin cores thing is that while other people could make Priori incantatum happen if the same animal happened to give their cores, but there has to be multiple factors happening to make it happen. One would be that it has to be a real duel. As in the combatants have to be actually trying to kill each other, so it might not be an issue in a school setting. Also, I think harry and voldemort have the added factor of the horcrux. When Voldemort tries to kill Harry, the horcrux inside Harry is actively trying to stop Voldemort from killing him.

To be fair,the point of Percy Jackson is deities in the modern world so it referencing the modern world frequently makes a lot of sense. I personally never noticed myself being taken out of the immersion, anyway

I've seen people with their tongues swollen because of an allergic reaction (thankfully witnessed in a hospital), albeit much smaller than Dudley's is described. The issue is not that it hurts or tastes terrible, but that it cuts off the airway and you can't breathe. So Dudley is essentially choking to death while the chaos reigns around him. Bully that he may be, he's still only a kid, so I'm on Arthur's side here.

I don’t think wizards wear muggle clothing as much as you might think. Just consider Archie, who we get to meet in a few chapters

I think it probably from what chamber secrets has shown us is that it takes almost half a year for a Phoenix to get to full maturity to be able to fly. So from what we can see it takes a full year for a Phoenix to do a life cycle then burns out.

You may be right; however, possibly Fawkes could've gone through a couple of cycles of life before the battle in the Ministry of Magic.

I always assumed Vernon boarded up the fireplace for the same reason he boarded up the mail slot… because of the Hogwarts letters! 😂

38:05 nah, it's just a normal british thing. partially because the dursley's don't want anything coming from the chimney, and so there's no real fire because it would burn the 2-by-4's blocking it. had nothing to do with fire being magical or whatever.

I always thought they were late bc they had trouble getting the Dursley's house connected to the Floo Network

I wonder if the Weasleys were late because Fred and George were trying to decide which of their sweets to bring.

First, it is kind of implied that not all wands are made with cores from domestic sources. Wild phoenixes must be a thing. They are just harder to find. I could imagine unicorns being captured and put into a pasture but, taming them would seem to be counter to their magical purity. I very much doubt that there are dragon's raised for butcher, so that a heartstring can be harvested. Second, it is summer so, of course the electric fire is cold. You can still have the lights going as an aesthetic for your home.
