I have a feeling that the "red star dropped into the Abyss" might be referring to Riko and how she started her journey into the Abyss as a RED whistle... "He's the sole survivor of the "Curse" that's spilling onto here". This makes me think that the lower parts of Orth are going to become part of a new layer, OR... this is a new curse that is starting to infiltrate Orth. But it's veeeeeeeeeeeery interesting that the pattern on his forehead looks an awful lot like the image of the Faraway Nest AND he's missing all of his limbs like Sherumi and Menae...

Don't forget the baby birthday death disease, which still needs to be explained. The curse also probably dramatically shortens your life span. Ozen's comment on Riko being a living corpse that can drop dead at any random second really makes this curse even more terrifying because Riko is going to eventually turn 13.

11:59 they missed the chance to refer to them as "Made in Abyss" since that's what they all are. Riko was born in the the Abyss, Reg lived in the Abyss, Nanachi was turned into a hollow in the Abyss and Faputa hatched in the Abyss. It even be correct for Prushka since she was raised there too. It would also fit the title.

I think both of these work. The reason why "Hello Abyss" is a really nice translation is because that seemed to be the original title of this work, only for that title to be referenced here. I feel like its just as fitting tbh.

We’re actually not in the endgame, or even close to it. According to him, he is shooting for 100 chapters total, and he stated that the end of Iruburu was the mid way point of the narrative. So it’s just not even close to being over yet apparently

My theory is riko is the red star, and reg is the golden flake, riko started as a red whistle and reg is described as perhaps being a resident of the golden city, additionally the title of the game “binary star falling into darkness”clearly references two people delving into the abyss, a reference from tsukushi

the eyes of the deep have cast down their gaze. the thin line of no return awaits this speckle of warm light. despair and a deep unknown may yet await, but perhaps that is ultimately the longing of those still human: that unfamiliar dark, so kindly terrifying yet so coldly inviting all the same....it's as ''warm'' as it is ''cold'', as ''dark'' as it is ''light''.... ok ''cactus gets pretentious'' moment over - you've out-done yourself once again man!! i feel like you've really improved on showing those small touches of character and envisioning movement in general, things such as the hand-signals and the small gestures from nanachi, tepaste and some others, it really sells their small quirks that sell their character! the way you animated the double-page spreads was absolutely wonderful too, from all the small motions in the big squad strut and the sense of scale in the spread with the view of the seventh layer, it makes it all the more grand in it's hidden horrors. what was even more un-expected was the voice-over for the poems, the censoring on the....very important and totally story-significant scene in the beginning was certainly not what i excepted but it did make me laugh quite a bit LOL god tsukushi why do you have to be like this dawg.... this chapter has quite a lot meat to it, the last section of it especially is very intriguing....tsukushi giving us small answers but giving us several tons more questions in turn, like an equivalent exchange of knowledge or smth. we can only imagine was awaits our team down below, though we know for sure it's going to rip our hearts out piece by piece... -remember to ctrl + s and also i'm very curious on how many times your computer crashed trying to render all of this (if at all) teehee-

Truly wonderful, to see all the little details you add across different scenes like Meinya jumping, i always adore how you tackle the money shots of the series, this one for the layer just feels so alive and that VA was a neat surprise, the dedication you put into each chapter is inspiring. Also the The 6+1 sosu and editors note: sosu haha. These chapters have been amazing at building the new mystery for this arc, how we have been giving pieces here and there that don't fit yet but the shape of the puzzle is starting to take form, Akihito does it again with that effect of just wanting more MiA from the moment the chapter ends, really hyped to see what is to come, specially in how we ended in both Orth and the Abyss.

Couldn't agree more! Tsukushi's art and writing is so fantastic that it truly requires multiple elements to give a full perspective on the genius behind it all. As I said in my comment, I sometimes struggle with reading the manga as-is because I often feel like there are elements I'm missing. Oh my god you have completely outdone yourself here. This was easily the most cinematic your animations have ever felt. 10:49 swept me off my feet. In fact, it's been said before but it should be said again. Your animations are such an incredible miracle that I feel Made in Abyss fans don't appreciate nearly as much they should. They're such a delicious appetizer for the anime adaption that we won't be seeing for at least 5 years. They're so good, I'd go as far as to say I'd recommend them to people that don't like switching from anime to manga. Seriously, there's THOUSANDS of manga's with niche fandoms that never get adaptations and their fanbases would KILL for stuff like this. The fact that Kevin Penkin gave you praise is one of the many Ws you deserve for doing this stuff. As for the chapter itself..... I don't even know where to begin. The small little nuanced ways that Srajo and the Hail Hex have been humanized go such a long way. Despite being a character that we're still not sure we can trust, she's still so endearing as well. And the same goes for the other characters and the little dynamics they have with both each other and Riko's gang. There's Nishagora's friendly rivalry with Reg, there's the budding bond between Yatamaru and that mysterious masked dude (which we saw in the Bondrewd flashback in chapter 64), there's Srajo's slowly budding slowly trusting relationship with Riko, etc. And then there's Sherumi and Menae. At first they were introduced just to exposit some cool trivia about the Abyss, but ever since their deaths they've been subtly built up more and more to the point of being the front cover of Volume 12 (I should've know there was more to it then Tsukushi being Tsukushi.....tho that may still be true). But after this revelation from Ozen, they're looking to be one of the most important factors of this arc..... Oh yeah, speaking of Ozen.... HOLY SHIT OZEN'S BACK! LIKE, BACK BACK! NOT JUST A NAME DROP! AND her appearance is a direct continuation of that Jirou side story from all those chapters ago holy shit. From the Shrine Maiden, to the mystery behind Miko, to whoever Doni is, to the full investigation behind the Birthday Death disease and now the mystery behind whatever the curse of the 7th layer is...... The build up in this arc is fucking insane and knowing this series I just know the pay-off is gonna be immaculate. And now I have theories regarding what's coming next. Since this is the last official chapter of Volume 12 and all that's left is a Side Story, I'm convinced that this upcoming side-story is gonna be a direct continuation of this Ozen & Jirou plot-line. Not only that, but I think this side-story is gonna be all about Ozen and Jirou trekking down to the 7th layer; whether it be through the same short-cut that Cravali took, the elevator that Bondrewd uses to go to and from Orth or through a different method I don't know......but I've always brainrotted about a scene where Ozen discovers what happened to that Field of Eternal Fortunes that Lyza loved so much....and I personally hope we get something like that....but yeah. Now for Riko and Srajo's joint operation, I don't think things are gonna go to plan.....at all (though it's MIA so that's a given lmfao). I think what's gonna happen is that Riko and Srajo are gonna be stuck together in a situation where they're forced to completely trust each other with their lives and that's gonna force Srajo to spill whatever secrets she's hiding about what the Juusou truly are and especially what happened to Sherumi and Menae. And to make the situation even more hectic....I think Ozen is gonna run into them as well while they're stuck. And.....for my wildest theory....I think there's a chance that Bondrewd could come back. Hear me out We saw in the Cravali side-story that Ozen's squad was planning something, and we saw Gyarike planning something along with the Umbra Hands. What if....Gyarike has Bondrewd's helmet with him? So that he can be summoned at will when things get bad? We already know that Gyarike is investigating the Shrine Maiden along with Hablog, it's just a maybe though. Once again, thank you so much for pumping out so much kino all the time. You're amazing.

I think i'll never get bored of these videos. After reading the chapter the first time seing your version of it animated is something I (we ?) appreciate a lot. Regarding the chapter itself i think we're finaly entering the serious business now and i'm pretty exicted to see what two groups joining their force together is gonna make. Like, imagine they face the "Miko" group and we end up having a team vs team group fight. For now we always had 1v1 (or like 3v1 againts Bondold but i think you understood what i mean). Really glad you noticed to more minor details in these edits. I really think its the smaller details that bring out the best aspects of grander panels, from particles to small birds, to camera blurring and utilising mise en scene. I think those small tricks go a long way, even when used on not so integral panels (it makes purely dialogue panels more interesting I feel). LMAO so fucking true. While this chapter has some cursed shit, it has provided me with an abundance of brilliant faputa faces which makes it all worth it. Thanks for always supporting me North, you're a legend

today, is made in abyss day ! first we get FrightRanker deep dive on volume 5, then we get a charming couple getting traumatized by ep 10 of s1, and to finish we geat a beautifull animation of chapter 66 ! once again, absolutely love the video, the reveal of the seventh layer got me smiling like a kid, the diner scene was just perfectly executed and i thought you said you would use dark cloud ost so what a surprise when i heard the last labyrinth for the hariyomari collection !!! always knew the song could fit in made in abyss since it's a made up language ! Loving the build-up on the mystery around the twins - with the way Akihito has kept cranking the pain levels and deepening the storytelling, I feel like this is going to become something pretty damn special. And more Ozen of course. Cos we can't have enough Ozen! Seems all but confirmed that the Abyss is a living thing at this point too, the very organic look of the 7th layer, talk of the Abyss "breathing" and the quoted passages are very interesting too. Are they prophetic? "A red star dropped into the Abyss" - maybe reference to Riko, who was a red whistle? One of my favourite things in the chapter though is how evident its become that Srajo's crew are walking on eggshells around her and the confirmation that a little thing like messing up the food could swing her down into depression. That bipolarity explains why she's loud and flamboyant when in a good mood... and now foreshadows the horror of seeing her in a bad mood. It's also clever because it's tapping into our own natural foreboding of meeting a white whistle after experiencing Bondrewd. The thought that Akihito puts into these things is just so good. Also Faputa's "Two, sosu!" just cracks me up for some reason. She really has been like a child or pet (in her case both) in a house full of adults. Fantastic work Mr. Pickell on putting this together.

I agree, Faputa is one of my most favorite characters in all of anime and I am appreciating every second of downtime we are getting with her since we are probably in for a lot of horrible suffering worse than what we've already seen. Given the trend of how it gets worse the deeper we go, I am sure we will long for the days of the steamed bun happy moments very quickly... I love the idea that the Abyss is a giant Juuzou itself! Idk why I didn't think of that before, but it wouldn't be suprising. The Abyss as a whole makes me think of some kind of eldritch horror sea cucumber lately. True Facts About Sea Cucumbers explains how creatures will live inside a sea cucumber's butt and given that the deepest part resembles the face or a mouth, maybe that's why, but the Japanese are more willing to explore unconventional themes compared to the west, so I can't help but think this is a possibility with how prude western creativity limits can be at times in comparison. If it's a giant Juuzou, it makes you wonder where the normally-birthed counterpart is unless that's the Earth/planet itself, some alien planet/creature, whatever is at the bottom, or even Riko with some complex time warping tomfoolery happening. Honestly, I think the spiral creature we saw in chains during the stage play thing in episode 1 is either Riko's mom, Riko's Juuzou, or at least whatever is at the bottom, but it's too soon to say and this series has taught me to embrace the answer of "what's at the bottom" and not any particular answer.

@@jilliancrawford7577 Exactly right that we know there's darkness coming, so we should appreciate the light while it's here XD On the idea of the Abyss being a Juusou - doesn't that create a chicken and egg problem? If Juusou are created by the Abyss, then how did the Abyss be created as a Juusou? That said, I've wondered before if the Abyss might've even been human once, after all we saw a little girl become a village, so anything is possible. Maybe it all began with the wishing eggs... I definitely see the Abyss as a kind of eldritch monstrosity though, but with one very clear analogy as to how it works - that being a black hole. The curse itself is like an increasingly powerful gravity field. You wouldn't feel it as long as you're moving toward the centre, except for being pulled along (which in a sense delvers very much are), but when you try and move in opposition to it... well with strong enough gravity I imagine dizziness, nausea and physical fatigue would be side-effects. Even hallucinations. Theoretically, when its strong enough, it would even cause haemorrhaging, vertigo to the point of losing one's sense of self entirely, and even, of course, physically deforming you. The sixth layer also acts as the event horizon of the Abyss, the point of no return, where gravity/the curse is too strong to come back from without said deformation or death. Then of course there's the time distortion, with time slowing as gravity gets stronger, just like it does in the Abyss. And then there's one more crucial thing, which I can't say for sure Akihito has deliberately done, but I'll be damned if it doesn't fit the analogy to a T. The only feature we know of in the 7th layer of the Abyss is "a ring of light". Well, at the centre of a black hole would be a singularity - pure energy created by the compression/collapse of physical matter falling into the black hole. Physicists have supposed that a singularity isn't in fact stationary and would oscillate slightly, moving in its own tiny orbit at ridiculous speeds. That would mean if we could envision a singularity, it shouldn't be as a point of light, but instead... yep, a ring of light. What that would mean in terms of the Abyss is anyone's guess - is it the God of the Abyss or maybe a representation of its sentience (or both)? Is it the accumulated matter, or souls, of everyone the Abyss is killing? Obviously I don't know if this whole analogy is what Akihito is going for or if he's just channelling some incredible intuition, and of course the Abyss isn't an actual black hole, but it's the sort of thing I absolutely love to see in a story.

I had always assumed "Spilling onto here" meant his remains are here. I'm not saying I don't believe that the abyss expands, I'm just saying it's a popular theory, one that for whatever reason, I can't find any evidence to; And no to be heavily implied doesn't make for good evidence: Remember even characters in the show theorize what the abyss is, what its meaning is, even the general world around them (stuff like gods, tradition, down to what the curse is supposed to be) these are all subject of character's interpretation of their world, so be careful when taking in information, and no, although white whistles might be the most abundant in information, that doesn't make them the most credible (not to mention they obviously don't know everything and are actively searching for answers). Looking back on the twins, the shape of the terrain in the final maelstrom, What they said during their " Death ", and what they mentioned to Reg, Now, we have a person who has similar qualities to that of the twins, making this highly likely to be that of the effects of the curse, which in my opinion is interesting. A curse that prevents you from moving forward, but due to the shifting nature of the final maelstrom, and its uneven terrain (it's one of two layers that isn't a completely straight shaft *down*). The fact Srajo said it might be " to late when it seems like were going to separate ", means this layer likely does move, and it isn't just a figment of imagination. Either that or it is a figment of imagination, and due to the terrain being so off putting, it might be that the curse rests so heavily on people that it displays its effects partially; Though this I'm only half sure of. The movement seems to be slow, really does feel like what you're seeing is the curse applying pressure to you, It would really fit with the analogy that the curse is like water pressure, the deeper you go the more intense its effects are, at the bottom of the lowest depths you'll feel more than just the symptoms of rising from this layer, but you'll also feel its crushing weight. A layer where seeing the curse field is your only chance of navigation sounds like an adequate Now I understand this is still a theory but from what I know of this show, this seems to put together most of these pieces. A layer which prevents a delver from moving forward into lower layers of the abyss is an interesting one, Personally, the answer I've seen people throw around of " sacrifices " being required to get through this layer is, kinda weird considering this layer sounds like a logistical problem, not an impossibility, I think Riko and her squad just need to git gud.

That is an incredibly fascinating theory. The idea of a curse that outright denies people proper navigation unless specific criteria is met is a really great Lovecraftian idea that also plays into the challenge that is delving and navigating the deeper depths of the ocean. The only reason these characters might stand a chance is because they are equipped with Jussous, special grade relics, a narehatte who can see the forcefield (without question, the MOST essential in navigating this layer), an immortal princess (not sure if Faputa's immortality is still intact now that Iruburu is destroyed though..) and a powerful aubade who can take on whatever challenges that await. I also had a similar feeling regarding the shifting nature of this layer. As the passages seem to proclaim that the abyss imitates breathing and that the abyss appears to be shifting (reference of creatures appearing on different layers then where they are meant to be). Fantastic idea, really vibe with this.

Somehow your videos make the manga easier for me to understand. I'm not saying the manga is written bad or anything, I just sometimes have a hard time getting as much out of it as the author intends for some reason. Maybe it's because there's still so much unknown, the story is meant to have slow burns and lots if buildup with complex subtext and nuance that doesn't all fit into a perfect puzzle until the very end, but I think it's also because ethe author is so good at creating mystery and the sense that questions will be answered eventually, thus allowing you to care that you're asking questions. Some series like to create mystery but have a false illusion that those mysteries will make sense in the end. Once you realize a series might fail to clear things up, you're more likely to be upset at asking questions than excited to ask them. When you know questions will get answered, you're also more excited to look for foreshadowing that could answer them to see if you can find the pieces to the answer early. Every element and detail of this series has a purpose and no question that could be asked feels like a missing piece or a burden. Even if a simple question like "why does Prushka say "papa's rod" doesn't have a 100% canon answer (the anthology does explain it but idk if those are canon given that they're done by other mangaka), it doesn't feel like a huge piece is missing just because we don't have anything 100% officially confirmed or that the answer needs to be anything incredibly groundbreaking to the rest if the story's lore. Small questions with simple answers are allowed to be asked and sometimes left unanswered, but there's still a desire to ask and no fear if being unanswered or unfulfilled. It's why I love this series so much, even if it's often too big-brained for me to always understand. (P.S. sorry for the rambling essay, this is what I'm like when my Adderall works and a weird train of thought is better than no thoughts at all lol.)

I'm so glad someone noticed this derail of these videos! I may appreciate how the lewd moments are toned down in the anime since loli/shota stuff makes me uncomfortable, but I also think it can take away from the managaka's intentions, especially since this series isn't mindless loli/shota hentai. The nudity has its place and it's meant to make you uncomfortable and add immersion into the world and story. Idk if the actual mangaka is into that stuff (I'm not saying he is), just that it has its place in the story and themes just like any other theme or motif, regardless of how the audience may feel about it. The censoring, well, censors without omitting the themes and I appreciate that. The censoring without omitting respects Tsukushi's vision and maintains the effects without violating TOS or leave it untouched and alienating people who understand its place but can't help but be repulsed by it instinctively or subconsciously. I respect that so much!!

That weird aspect of the series is a part of Made In Abyss' identity at this point. It is intentionally meant to make you feel uncomfortable, and it absolutely does that. Akihito actually confirmed this point in a tweet on his personal/discreet twitter account only recently when creating this very chapter. Proclaiming that some ideas can only be tackled in some of the more vial imagery his series tend to represent. While at times it can be considered unnecessary, there are times where its presentation to some extent, bares significance, and as an editor/storyteller, I don't want to shy away from aspects of this series that make it what it is. While I personally don't agree with how Akihito portrays certain ideas, I respect his dedication to his craft and his dedication to his own ideas and I don't want to take that away from both sensei and those who are engaging with his works. I simply aim to make his ideas more accessible and less taboo to viewers who feel like this series is too hard to engage with because of its more controversial imagery, whilst also maintaining a healthy relationship with KZbin's TOS without having to completely remove parts because what they may show visually. TLDR, Appreciate your understanding of that. I know its a hard thing to discuss so I appreciate you having the confidence to speak on it :)

Theory time: They mentioned the "breath of the abyss" more than once. This is just a theory that popped into my mind without much thought when I finished this chapter, so it's likely not true, but I found it to be an interesting thought: Maybe the abyss really is an eldritch creature that uses the curses like we use oxygen - for breathing; it "breathes" in something fresh (like we do fresh oxygen) - maybe the pure souls of adventurers by luring them in - and "breathes" out the curse (carbon dioxide for us) after it is done inhaling enough of that something (which takes around 2000 years... listen if it's a giant creature it's respiratory system might work that slowly!). This could explain the curse "spilling onto Orth": once it fully exhales, its shrunken lungs (whatever and wherever those might be) cause the upper layers to crumble and people to die of the curse that's exiting through the hole's upper layers - which would technically be the creature's trachea and mouth.

To be honest, I think this theory holds up really well. I've seen it a few times here in the comments and I am sure yall are onto something. Akihito has a strange obsession with the ocean, he loves its ambiguity but above all else, the creatures that inhabit it. I saw a theory where they relayed the idea of the abyss as a creature in relation to the sea cucumber whose internal organs and body structure seem quite reminiscent of the abyss if placed vertically. They also excrete substances from their mouths to trap prey whilst also hoarding off predators (sounds kind of similar to the idea of the abyss excreting the curse onto orth). Just fascinating theories from yall, its awesome to read these types of things.

When the latest chapter was 64 I said that I think we will enter seventh (also together with Srajo) in two chapters. I didn't believe it, but felt like it. Well, I was corect. Interesting. MiA felt off to me cause of this chapter. It felt weird that we entered it. It felt like MiA will end soon. Of course I don't think so. I think it will be coming out till like 2030. Always love reading your comments Kikikz! I adore your passion for this series and I love how open you are about it! It also caught me off guard realising that we are now already in the seventh layer! I was expecting to get here so soon but I can't say I don't love that. The new arc taking place in an entirely new layer just seems right to me looking back. While I'm pretty sure Made In Abyss still has a lot left (I'm speculating a total of 20 volumes at the max), it does feel kind of end-game doesnt it? But Akihito is a writer whose constantly subverting expectations, so I'm sure he is deliberating misleading people with this set up 😜 I feel Ozen and Leader's story will be sprinkled throughout. Riko and Nanachi mentioned how there is clearly something happening in Orth (Chapter 61) and this is CLEARLY in relation to the curse that is spreading above layer one and into orth. It surely is integral to the plot so I imagine going forward, it will absolutely be presenting itself again in this new arc. The "Hello Abyss" name drop was so awesome lmao. I'm sure Akihito is proud of himself for that one. "Hello Abyss" and "Made In Abyss" are titles that get compared to one another, lots of people believe that the series is actually named "Hello Abyss", whilst when translated overseas it proclaimed a new name "Made In Abyss". I need to do research to find out the truth behind it, but either way, its clearly a reference to the very first chapter of the entire series. Thank you so much for watching as always Kikikiz!
