I'm a bit confused by marx makes a distinction between communists and the working class. Was he imagining a separate group activists and political leaders who are not working class?

From what I understand the Communists are the activist groups that are meant to help the working class rise, essentially taking pity on them and helping them in their fight against the bourgeoisie. In chapter one of the Communist manifesto, I believe it says that the communists are meant to educate the proletariat. In fact, marx was not a part of the proletariat. He went to school for law and philosophy and essentially came from a middle class upbringing so his view is more like we are going to help the working class through communism, not necessarily that they are Communist themselves
