Character Analysis: Why is Jason Grace So Hated?

4:44 THIS IS WHAT I'M THINKING!! yes, jason's past was finally mentioned in the blood of olympus but it was kinda just brushed over in 15 pages, while the other characters were constantly thrown into flashbacks throughout all the heroes of olympus books. in this way, his character is definitely underdeveloped compared to the others, so there he loses much interesting characteristic. he can be a great character otherwise, which is why i think he deserves some sort of prequel book featuring reyna, it would really help us understand his backstory and actually feel something toward it. that's my opinion on it :)

I agree. Jason was a character who had so much potential and he could've been developed more to prove himself as a compelling character. I wish Rick could've done that more to stop the comparisons made to Percy and the rest of the characters.

I like Jason, but comparing him to Percy in a sense is unfair, because we got five individual books of Percy's character development. And well Percy in my opinion has a better personality and is more appealing to read. Percy is my personal favourite, but Jason is still a well written character.

Comparing Percy to Jason is pretty harsh on Jason’s part because Jason didn’t have five books to grow and establish himself as a character whereas Percy had that through the PJO books. I agree with this 1000%. I Also think the point is there wasn’t much to Jason besides what you see until he was given a new perspective from the amnesia. Not saying he was completely bland but being a dedicated soldier was his life and kind of his personality until Hera pulled the switch with him and Percy. It opened his eyes to a new world and he was trying to figure it and himself out. The one thing he stayed true to until the end were his morals. I thought he was a great character tbh.

Jason didn't deserve the hate from the fandom. He's my favorite character, even over Nico, Percy, Annabeth, and many others. Spoiler warning from Trials of Apollo Book 3: Jason's death really shocked me and was the first death that I cried over. Reading the Lost Hero, I loved reading Jason's POV chapters since I loved that his life was such a huge mystery when he lost his memories. Percy's loss of memories was less interesting since I had already read all about Percy for 5 books. Like I said, Jason didn't deserve the amount of hate that he got.

I really enjoyed Jason as a character from the moment I read his first chapter. I haven't grown up with the Percy Jackson books and started reading them about 2 years ago. Right after I finished The Last Olympian, I bought The Lost Hero on Audible and Jason was my favorite character in that book because of the fact that he was clearly not a son of Zeus, but rather Jupiter, and his amnesia aspect made me want to find out everything I could about him. I was disapointed to find out his backstory so late, but he still deserves way more credit.

I think my reason was in the lost hero I was just like “where’s Percy? Percy gonna be found any time now……is that Percy!?! No….. No Percy = bad book” keep in mind I was a child then, but I’m sure it has some effect on me

I started reading the heroes of olympus series in my school library like 3 months ago so I don't have the same connection with percy or the others and I instantly liked jason He is tied to my favorite character with leo I have never read the pjo series and im in the house of hades now Idk why people hate him but he is one of my favorite characters Edit: I think the main reason people don't like him is because he wasn't percy and that they were expecting percy in the lost hero

TLH: Jason has amnesia, so we learn nothing about his, and he is constantly compared to Percy, who is the fan favorite.(Percy and Jason aren't even that similar, he maps more closely to Annabeth) SoN: He isn't in the book. We hear secondhand about some of his achievements, but Percy ties his greatest accomplishment by becoming Praetor in a week, making Jason seem less impressive. MoA: Jason doesn't have any POV chapters, so he is sidelined. The first section is the first and only time we see him in New Rome and its an Annabeth chapter in which he acts like an idiot. He is too powerful, so he is knocked out at the start of every fight so the POV person can solve the problem. His entire storyline his relegated to his boring failed romance with Piper and his with rivalry Percy, which just made people hate him more because fans liked Percy better. HoH: Jason only has two sections to shine, and one of them is primarily devoted to Nico, so his arc of preferring Greek to Roman is rushed, especially since we never get any scenes past of present of him in New Rome from his POV. BoO: He finally gets some focus and cool moments, and has a clear character motivation of helping the minor gods, probably in because the author realized he needed to make people like him. TBM: He is only in a few chapters and then he dies. TLDR: Jason had potential with an interesting past shrouded in mystery, but he was unfairly pitted against a fan favorite character for no good reason and the actual details of his past were not explored. He could have recovered, but he was sidelined for the next three books and ended up seeming like a useless idiot. Once he did get the spotlight again fans had already made up their minds about him, only appreciating him after he had been killed off.

Wow- this is a pretty detailed take on Jason's character. You refreshed me on what happened in the books regarding Jason's character and its true. Jason didn't have as much buildup and like you said, he was pushed back into the sidelines and placed against a fan favorite character like Percy Jackson himself. It's honestly a poor decision to make for his character as you have to make readers like your new character but the amnesia plot line, Jason's back story being thrown under the bus until The Blood of Olympus, the constant gag of him getting knocked out in the fight after being told he's a fearsome fighter, and the ongoing trend of characters just telling us about Jason instead of showing us what's happening. These things triggered fans to not like him and I guess Rick tried to redeem Jason by giving a bit more of Jason in The Blood of Olympus but by then, it's too late to connect with Jason because the next appearance he even gets is in The Burning Maze when he's killed off. With all of this, his character could've had more potential had Rick gave more time to develop Jason in the books.

Hii, there! That's a nice detail- a lot of heroes in Greek Mythology have such tragic deaths and Jason (from the Argonauts and basically Jason Grace's namesake) was part of that. I think you're right that it's poetic of Rick to give Jason a much peaceful ending than the one that happened to Jason in the myth as our Jason chose his fate to die and made peace with it- that's something I didn't really notice :)))) Thank you!

If anything, Trials of Apollo was the PERFECT time to expand on Jason's character. Rick obviously messed up by not giving us enough backstory about him in the heroes of olympus, but thats always salvageable. Instead Rick seemed to give in to the fan-hate (most of whom are middle schoolers who are just too young to read too deeply into more serial characters) and ended up removing Jason completely. I think i loved him since Mark of Athena, around that time i was starting to get tired of Percy and thought Jason's gap of buff blonde warrior on the outside and clueless on the inside was funny. His handling of Nico's coming out was also one of my most cherished scenes in the entire series, i literally can't think of any other character who could have comforted nico better in that situation. He was also a 'big brother' protector character despite being a little brother himself. Giving him glasses was a great touch, he was literally blonde clark kent and it was endearing. Sorry for the rant I'm just mad no one seemed to like Jason or realise his worth until he died and now we cant even have him back.

Hii, there! You made some great points about Jason's character and I agree with what you said about how Rick seemed to have given in with the Jason hate and just decided to kill Jason off. I think that decision was a bit double sided in the sense that it was supposed to emotionally impact Apollo and make him realize just how fragile life could be (something Apollo never thought of as a god) and to conveniently kill of a character whom a lot of people in the fandom hated. I am sad that Rick decided to remove Jason completely and I do agree with what you said about Jason's bond with Nico :))) it is so sweet to see the two of them bond in The House of Hades to The Blood of Olympus and I wish we could've gotten more of that instead of Jason's death. I love Jason and hot take (hate piper) i feel like the issues of Jiper are all pinned on Jason when first of all its all heras fault but he still seems to be blamed, when honesty out of the two piper forced it more, also you cannot compare Jason to other characters such as Percy and nico who are ultimately the strongest in the series so as much as i like Jason percy and nico are just more, also if you like the roman side of all of this Ive been rereading this awesome fanfic by combattombat well its more like 3 fics in a series with more to come but anyway its called “Impreator” it is legit a 10/10 read

Ultimately though, they didn't work out and I honestly wished they could've remained as friends before they forced a romantic relationship. Alsoo yes, comparing Jason and Percy is such an unfair thing to do because Percy had more development and history in PJO but Jason doesn't have that. He was the easiest to kill off I stand by the sentiment and I expected it he was not a fan favorite unlike nico and Leo when first introduced and felt like he was riding on Percy rival wave his confrontation with Percy lack excitement compare to Percy vs Thalia in the first series plus in the last Olympian Thalia was just cool and had a better design Jason came across as all American Boy Scout and Rick did a lot of tell not show with Jason I’m supposed to believe he cool based only on vibes no actual action

I haven't even touched this series because of the spoilers. Hearing how Jason was written off and then Piper was paired with another female character just left such a poor taste in my mouth, after coming off of the PEAK series which was The Heroes of Olympus. THOE will always hold a super special place in my heart as one of my favorite book series' so with Trials of Apollo doing my boy, and their relationship dirty like that, for what I feel is an attempt at forcing diversity, It just keeps me from wanting to even pick up Trials of Apollo, or anything else Percy Jackson related until the end of time. I wouldn't mind being convinced otherwise, just because I want to have hope for this book series. Maximum Ride, Wings of Fire, and Percy Jackson, all solid young adult books ruined by a series of unfortunate decisions. To me, as of now, anything past Blood of Olympus isn't canon to me 😂😂
