A couple of comments for those going though this (excellent) tutorial: 3:33: This tripped me up late in the game: BigGreenMug *was pressing the shift button* while creating the hand and thumb joints. This allowed them to be created as three-joint objects separate of the existing hierarchy (and also why they were on the floor). If you try to create the hand and thumb joints directly to the wrist joint, you'll only get *two joints,* with the upper thumb and upper finger joints connected as one. I didn't realize this until I wound up on the hand pose morph. At that point, you'll realize this mistake, as the hand will not pose correctly. 21:02: One of the reasons I went for this tutorial is because C4D's auto-rigger for bipeds doesn't include options for fictional creature designs with limited spines (e.g., head/torso/hips all as one - think SpongeBob Squarepants). In doing so, I discovered some pretty significant deformations to the main "body" of the model when I tested rotating the character_ctrl. I was lucky enough to fall down the right Google search to learn about the weight tool, allowing me to remove the femur's twisting motions upon the main body. Just putting this here in case anyone finds themselves in a similar (if rather specific) situation. 26:30: Before you link those Xpresso tags, make sure the animation sliders are pulled to 100% as shown here. For whatever reason, mine were at 0% by default, and when I went to link up the curl data with the pose morph, nothing happened.

For anyone who is having trouble with the IK POLES because the elbows are in the incorrect direction I messed around and realised my arm was deadstraight instead of on a curve, c4d needs some direction as to where the elbow is going to be pointing so when using the joint tool when it gets to the elbow angle it outwards where you want the elbow to be point for the poles to work correctly. This is something I was stuck on for awhile because the character big green mug was using is correct. so anyone working with straight arm model make sure to add a slight curve to the elbow joint to give c4d a direction or you'll be messing around for hours trying to figure out what the fuck is going on. great tutorial thanks for your knowledge
@JonHutton6 жыл бұрын
This is great info and something I should add in. You want your joints original position to be in the shape they bend towards.

what's your work around when you have a more detailed character and you want to turn the hand from one side to the other? at the moment my model keeps pinching on the wrist when I try turn the hand 180 degree's so it seems I can only have the hand facing one way when I am animating

Great tutorial. I do a little character animation occasionally, and every time it's like starting over because I don't do enough to keep the details in my head. This is something I'll go back to a lot I'm sure. Do you have one of these with a more complex facial animation in the mix... using pose morphs for facial expressions and dialog...

I did manage to bind it, but only the body mesh and I ended up undoing it as it didn't get everything I needed. I'm guessing some hierarchical screw up that I'm not aware I'm doing. My problem now is that in my personal model, my legs, eyes, eyelids, eyebrows, and wings are all separate objects from main body mesh, I have pose morphs to control eyelids and borws, but I don't know how to connect my separate objects without losing my tags. Also I have my wings set up to work in motion and am not sure what the affect would be on that. Honestly my model is simple (it's a fly) and I just need the head, and neck to move up, down and turn left and right. And I need the body to move up and down down slightly as well. (Head and Body are connected) I've been trying the twist deformer but it seems to be distorting my mesh a little to much. Do you know of anyway to maybe smoothing defomers out? Sorry this was a lot of information probably poorly written out, I'm just in a bit of a frustrating jam right now. Thanks.

Hi John, I've been working on "Gary", the main character from Final Space, and his arms and legs are like spaghetti... Do you have any tips for rigging the limbs using a couple of joints but getting it as smooth as there's no actual joints? Or is the only solution to divide the limbs into a lot of joints to get the smoothness? - I've tried with a few joints, but it looks way too stiff... And thanks for the great tutorial!!! You can do whatever way you want. However I find the character tool to be extremely cumbersome/ un-intuitive and it hasn't really been updated since it's release years ago. I think it's beneficial for users to understand what's going on under the hood, that way they can create custom solutions for their projects.
