Moiraine in being so distant and detached from the Aes Sedai, being viewed as a bit of a loose cannon or rebel within the Tower ends up humbling the old order. She is what Aes Sedai are supposed to be. She goes her own way, but more than being a legend, I think she will be held up as an example to aspire to for future generations. She went against the norm for Aes Sedai often, took crap for it and never cared. In the end, she was right, they were wrong. She wasn't a good Aes Sedai, she was the _perfect_ Aes Sedai. Well written by Jordan, complex, nuanced, cold but never cruel. She did what had to be done, never caring about the cost to herself. She was the catalyst for the whole story. Without her? The Dark One wins easily. Perhaps the pattern bent some threads to have her in the room when the foretelling of the Dragon being reborn occurred. As if the Creator himself said 'hey, you of all people need to hear this'. Everyone played their role, but in.the final outcome, it was Moiraine's chess game against the Dark One tgat brought victory. She set all the peices on the board and put the game in motion. She played Daes Damar with the devil himself.... and won.

I don't think the mice was the source of Elaida's grudge against Moiraine and Siuan. I believe it was that Elaida believed they told Merean (The Mistress of Novices) about the training, as Merean says "I trust you will accept her gift in the spirit it was given. After all, she paid a price in humiliation for giving it when I confronted her." Also the mice took place after the testing where Elaida had been very hard on them almost as if she was trying to make them fail the testing. Canluum was not the first time she met Cadsuane as she recognized Cadsuane's voice. I'm not sure Moiraine had the angreal as long as you think, in part because in the second book when the Amyrlin visited Fal Dara she told Moiraine the Hall wanted her to return the angreal since they believe she has become unreliable. Also because after that meeting I can't recall any mention of her using the angreal. Last comment on this, I don't think Moiraine learned she would marry Thom from her three questions, but from Min. My basis for this is in part when Rand and Mat tell her Thom died in Whitrebridge saving them from a Fade, Moiraine say not to be so sure he is dead. Also the fourth book Moiraine says "I could wager I know the face of the man I will marry better than either of you knows that of your future husband." This statement is made before she enters the ter'angreal.

Elaida was harsh on them before the testing to HELP them pass, not to harm them. She knows that the harsh treatment is akin to something in the test and was trying to prepare them and was admonished later for helping them.

@@gordonross3270 Elaida was harsh because she was a Red. Her actions of overthrowing Siuan Sanche, killing her Warder and stilling her and Leane showed that she had neither remorse or sympathy. She couldn't have cared less if they passed the test, in my opinion.

something like that is hinted in new spring story. I think Elaida, at least at the beginning, is not intentionally bad. she is just... very much focused on herself/her goals - the same. Aes Sedai all support hard training (biting at the mistress of novices' room...). Elaida is taking it too far, partially because she is really red ajah and they all have little amount of sympathy to others. but to her prospection she is trying to help Moiraine and Siuan reach their full potential and pass - not to help them personally God forbides, but maybe to make them choose the red (because they are so strong), or to make them her alias later. even before the training to the test she is pushing them hard, even before she became Aes Sedai herself. other sisters (read new spring...) seem to think she is adopting the two, like giving them her sponsorship. but in the training to the test she is really stepping out of line, almost breaking tower's law (oh, not because it was so horrible towards them, but because she almost helped them cheat in the test), and other excepted are notifying the mistress of novices of what's going on, out of pity to Moiraine and Siuan. of course, Elaida thinks they were the ones to tell her of, and from this point and on she hates them - and quite rightfully, from her point of vision - I am helping you so much and you are getting me humiliated for that?! how dare you?!! so she tries to make them fall on the test, and of course when they put mice in her bed it doesn't help...

I find Moraine as a flexible Aes Sedai. Her relationship with the wise ones. She displayed excellently dignity. And I feel she was very brave Lan called her a worrier and you can read how would fight Trollocs and the eyeless with courage. There was a point I found funny when she was speaking with Rand and he called her little sister when she knew she had to go to the docks and fight Lanfear. She was one of the bravest character in this series. I just love her. She did everything for the benefit for Rand and not the tower. What she did as more than brave she was a legend. I’m glad she made to the new age and I think she is spending her time traveling with Tom. I just wonder how she and Cadsuane the new Amyrlin are getting along lol.

How did I just find this video? I like this a lot. Moiraine is also my favorite character in the series, and she was the one I immediately liked from the beginning. I read the books as they were being published, but she was always my favorite even when she started to sort of fade into the background. And of course when she went out like a boss in The Fires Of Heaven I was devastated, but I knew she and Lanfear couldn't possibly be dead, so I always awaited her return. I would like to see more in this series, I'd love to see you examine other characters. I'd like to hear your take on the Forsaken, Cadsuane, Elaida, Egwene, and really any other character that you think deserves a full episode devoted to them. You could group certain characters together if need be, like the Asha'man (other than Mazrim Taim and Logain Ablar, of course), the Salidar Aes Sedai, the Black Ajah, etc. Keep this going!

There are some very good points in this video that ascertain Moiraine's being one of the key players in the whole story. She was certain that Rand was the Dragon, and did her best to keep him alive and hidden from the White Tower (Aside from Siuan, the Amyrlin, and her best friend). Also in beginning to teach both Egwene and Nynaeve the use of the OP in TEoTW, before they even got to Tar Valon. Forcing Rand to realize that he truly is the Dragon, then trying to help him with this newfound power which she can't teach him. And then after a very prolonged absence in the last half of the series, she turns up again to be one of the pivotal key players, without her, the outcome would surely have been much worse. Very much respect and admiration for Moiraine.

I am enjoying the comradeship found with fellow readers around this book series (that I've read EVERY YEAR since 2006 - until all the books were completed). I own the hard back, mass market soft backs and even bought the kindle version so it would be easier to cross reference by using the x-ray feature, kindle highlights and bookmarks. all 15 of the books are with me constantly, and on hand for my pleasure and perusal at the tap of my finger on my kindle's screen. This story is full of depth, heartache, frustration (people are so stubborn and they don't talk about - the things that they really should talk about - like right now). I still love the characters deeply even though their desire to be the right fighter has caused more drama than necessary. However, at the end of the day, the reluctant heroes and the fussy healers, the hesitant leader and the semi-mad savior along with his group of wives and loyal friends and followers dedicated to the light, makes this by far, hands down my most favorite series of all times. I'm in happy Nerdville with the announcement of this show and planning on staying here as long as I want.

I think she is a great mentor character and like Gandalf in LOTR she is a wizard (of sorts) and much more powerful than the main characters initially. She is wise but not all knowing or all seeing. Her power level is not so great that you ask why she doesn't just over power the enemy and you don't see the other characters as irrelevant. In some ways she reminds me of Cable from the X Men comics. A mentor who combines knowledge and power but needs the help of the main characters. She is probably my favorite WOT character.

I really do like Moiraine, but I have two questions about characters: 1. What character did you like in the beginning and hate at the end (light or dark) and, 2. What character did you hate at the beginning but end up loving in the end? To answer my own questions, 1. Perrin (such a whiner), and 2. Matt (I think the dagger influenced him in books 1-4). On a separate statement, I really did not like the entire arc of Egwene. To me she became the "I have the power, so therefore I am always right". Never really learning from her mistakes, I actually felt a relief when she died, I would not have to read any more about her.

Michael Murphy I would say I agree with you on Perrin. I didn’t dislike him at the end, just became bored with his plot line, which I think is a fairly common opinion among readers. I would group in Egwene here as well, because I don’t like her, but I do think she is well written; other than one thing, which I’ll Be covering in a future video so I’ll save that for then. For someone I didn’t like at the beginning but loved in the end, I would say I agree on Mat, but I also think he was written that way. I knew all of this after reading through the books 4 times but it still made me tear up. I’m so glad I listened through it

Only upto 3rd book in tbe series but yes her presence is very important. I just keep wishing she was more upfront and open to the 5. Yes they are teenagers in the book, but she tells them so little. Nor does she seem interested in their various occurrences. As yet even Selene has not been mentioned to her. Which lravrs the 3 boyz open to her wiles

6 White mice, not rats. Would have thought that they were thought to be pillow friends by fellow sisters rather than actual pillow friends because they were so close?

Elayne Trakand I mean she’s no Elayne 😂😂😂. But I do love me some Moiraine

Nae'Blis, I think Moraine was a very apt first character edition. I look forward to hear what you have to say about me when you cycle through the characters again. ❤️

Elayne Trakand I figured she was featured in the press release about the show, why not start with her.
@elaynetrakand70015 жыл бұрын
Nae'Blis yes! She is the perfect choice. Like you said, her presence is felt in the books, even when she is not in them. I think Amazon was on to something by making her such a main focus of the press release.

@@NaeBlis i think you should do the characters in the same order they were introduced in the books. it just makes sense.

To be fair it has been a while since I read the books but does not Moiraine use balefire on a pack of darkhounds while they chase Rand. Right after Perrin picks up Faile and continuing his killing streak? Might be wrong though. First time killing a Forsaken at any rate. ;-)
@MrSmokinDragon4 жыл бұрын
You are partly right, iirc she kills a pack in Ilian with balefire, so some weeks after picking up Faile.

@@MrSmokinDragon Oh well, so I was a few weeks off. But if I remember correctly it is still before the "first time" in this video. Again I might be off because how long has it been since I made this comment? ;-) Edit: Doh, I AM an idiot, it says so right up there! A year, really? Well, at least I got a reply to it. Better late than never. :-P

@@signaltome Oh, you are correct in that, just the timing was off, but not by much :)

So many things to disagree with, so little time. Obviously the "what happened next" isn't worth much debunking since it's pure fan fiction, there's not an iota of information, or even a bare mention of Moraine after the last battle. That kind of brings me to the second point. She's barely in the story. Obviously she has a big impact in the first few books, but she's certainly not the "Gandalf" character. She's just a tool for early plot progression and then she's gone. The "Gandalf" title certainly goes to Cadsuane who's present for far longer than Moiraine, was the key to saving Rand from his darkness and got to (SPOILER ALERT) be the one to realize Rand's still alive. If Moiraine had the importance you claim she has in the story, wouldn't that privilege be her's? Finally you say her character progression isn't that big. Clearly you missed key points in her language and demeanor after her return. She went from the archetypical Aes Sedai (authoritative, manipulative, secretive etc) to a truly wise woman with deep understanding and respect for other people's thoughts and profound knowledge of what's happening and what should happen. We never learn all of the Eelfinn "gifts" but she obviously grew a lot as a character within that time period and for you not to notice that is very puzzling to me.

I want to watch these videos. But I'm only on the first book near the end. I really like Moiraine. I guess I'll be back in a year or two after I finish the series!!!!!!!
