Hope this helps - so many problems I see with scripts are macro problems like structure, stakes and character choices vs. micro problems. Don't forget to give it a thumbs up if you liked it - that makes me happy:) Love, WD

Thank you for the info im barely getting started out writing my own stories and everything you've explained is gold i watch a lot of movies and i got tired of the whole being entertained aspect of it and started noticing patterns in the movies in the journeys the characters take the mini goals to accomplish the main goal of three movie like you said in another one of your videos things that I've been starting to notice in a movie you've brought to light for me. I had written a story and bout midpoint i was lost and even lost interest in my own story. And wheni saw the video about you talking about having a concept and making the the flaws of my character relate to the journey and within that journey he/she has growth is so genius and even having to sacrifice something along that journey is just brilliant im gonna look up more scripts to read and learn from your videos. I have a story to tell but i don't want it to be boring.

I started writing these down. Then I kept writing them down some more. So many great points to consider. Definitely going back to the drawing board for major surgery on my current main character. This should help him survive past page 60.

Jeff Tarbell I've had to do the same thing. And don't be discouraged if one of your characters "flatlines", it just means they weren't as important as they seemed. Pick their remains apart & spread certain aspects of them into various other characters, or new characters.

"Tora! Tora! Tora!" An allstar cast but no character dominates. "2001: A Space Odyssey" There are memorable characters but they are only in for segments of the movie. There is very little dialogue.

Pulp fiction doesn’t have a main character. Neither does Magnolia. I remember watching an interview with PTA and he couldn’t tell the guy what the movie was about. Maybe it depends on how the story is told or is it’s interesting?

In "Raiders of the Lost Ark" the bad guys were "straight out of central casting". Belloq seemed an archaeologist version of a mad scientist. Indiana Jones had a past with Marion but would that have made a difference in the movie? What am I missing?

Agree with your points but I’ve seen many stories based on main characters who don’t have any goals or lukewarm in nature. I don’t believe every main character should have an interesting goal. Classic example is Manchester by the sea. What seems to be a pretty trivial premise is shoved into our hearts by amazing writing and acting.

Quick question... I am a horror / thriller writer and the main pillar or my current book is this cosmic horror twist. So is it wrong to have more than one lead character fighting their own battle with the antagonistic force?

@jjkhawaiian
@jjkhawaiian 6 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert, but I'll take a poke at this. IMHO, the theme should be written throughout your screenplay in bits and pieces. You can present it, or convince the audience, subtly or with a strong performance of your lead character. The change of the lead character at the end of the movie should solidify the theme. What did they learn? Who are they now than what they were at the beginning of the story? How impactful was that change?

As for character arc, i can take it either way: They grow or learn at the end, or don't. I just wanna be entertained. Reading an article about O' Brother Where Art Thou, it mentioned that Everett (G. Clooney) still didn't learn from what put him in prison in the first place. Near the end, he wanted to become a dentist by getting a phony license. But that's the Coen Bros. They can get away with that. I mostly don't like trends, but i think it's time for one where the main character don't learn s#it!! haha.

I read a comment about "Gone With the Wind" that Scarlett O'Hara didn't grow. That's not correct. She grew but not in a way many people would like. Growing doesn't mean likeable. Then there is "The Fountainhead" where the premise is Howard Roark can't grow.

What do you suggest for fixing the "No lead character" problem? My idea for a screenplay is extremely messed up-A case in New Spain, then one in the Vatican, but the lead character in the New Spain is thrown up in jail, so the case un the Vatican continues and the detective dies... It is just a mess. I hope you can help me.

It’s your story but u can add anyone to have it be their POV as long as the telling of the story changes their story. U could have a fellow inmate who learns the story or a reporter who interviews the man in jail or follow a defense attorney or prosecuting attorney. There is no right answer.

i skip forward on your advice, ''you make money, i dont. '' = you are correct i am not. ... BUT; who says , characters need a flaw , successful characters dont need a flaw. who says a jumble of idiots is not a good play, many plays, entertaining ones had a jumble of idiots. if you found these plays you read , boring , it was not the characters , it was the words, .words must paint in your mind, it can be an abstract , realism, not a spilled glob of colors but a form. a moron can like a play, it will speak of the characters , it is never the characters it is always the words. .
