Hodor has been hinted at being part giant in Game of Thrones / A Song of Ice and Fire
Other characters like the Mounatain, the Hound, Brienne of Tarth are of comparable size

The death of the Children and Giant races - and dragons - is the end of the age of magic in the world of ice and fire, and the start of the age of men. Similar to Tolkien's universe, where magic and the Elves are growing weaker as time marches on and the race of men becomes dominant after the War of the Ring.

In regards to some of the human characters having giants blood, what makes you chalk the Cleganes being fully human while others are likely enough to have giant ancestry? In terms of abnormally large human characters, in GOT and other series alike, there does seem to be disproportionately more giant-like humans when actually giants exist in the setting. While it indicates that some of them are more likely to be giants by probability, some of the reasoning seems sketchy. If we are to go by the real world, giants-like humans do exist. "Andre the Giant" and "Angus MacAskill" are both real life giants with monstrous strength, though unverified and most certainly exaggerated, with heights of 224cm and 236cm respectively at their peak. If Andre the Giant was a fictional character that existed in GOT, alongside Hodor, you would say that he is a descendent of a giant. This is obviously a bit foolish with how we know in that he actually exists in real life, and I doubt that you think he is a descendant of a real giant. A KZbin video titled "The Anthropology of Game of Thrones", among other videos, also leads me to believe that if humans and giants can create lineages together, then there would be more similarities. Why is it that intelligence is something that doesn't to be affected that frequently in humans that you think have giants blood? Even the Nobles of Westeros aren't supposed to be that smart, if we are to assume that they are similar to those they draw parallels with. Unless there is a unique genetic reason as to why low intelligence wouldn't be passed on but height/strength is. If say one of the massive male characters like the Hound was to have supposedly had a child with Brienne but the child themselves was puny and weak, but in a regular genetic way. Would you expect me to believe that its actually there child? Where is the giant within them? The way I think about this is the way I think about certain characters heights being the best piece of evidence for having a giant relative. Perhaps if these giants had some mystical force about them other than their sheer size, or that giants themselves are magically enhanced to be stronger than what their physiology allows. With descendants of giants being significantly stronger than a real world human (Like Conan the Barbarian. A character with no real explanation for his strength past being "built different"), then maybe I might accept your premise. But what you have seems pretty flimsy altogether. I have criticism with the notion that the Umbers are giant descendants. People who have historically lived in colder regions generally are generally more taut muscle and bound in fat to adapt to the environment. It stands to reason that people who have a (relatively) more reliable source of food who live in a climate like that would become very large. What of the cultural influence of size in breeding? I'm sure that plenty of people of great size were raised to higher statuses, as were their descendants. So on and so fourth until aristocracy is heavily populated by these massive people. The fact that House Clegane was created due to the physical prowess of its first member gives credence to this being a potential avenue for other houses of exceptionally sized men. Another thing of the claims made by people within the story about giants and ancestry. Just because magic exists doesn't mean that people's claims about it are necessarily true. Lying and exaggeration exist in the world and the fantasy world. Why would these things disappear in GOT of all things? I do think that Osha was serious though. Her character and experiences do indicate that she was being serious.

@Benjamin David Lurie I don't understand what you are trying to convey. Same goes for your other reply. Does my comment have something to do with children in your perspective (Other than my analogy about a Hound X Brienne analogy)?

I'm not sure if it's different in the game of thrones books but the idea that a mix of a giant or giantess and a regular man or woman would create an offspring in the middle of their sizes is not genetically sound. For the most part you will take after one parent or the other when it comes to your height and so there would be more offspring growing to a regular height and to giant height and very few that would have settled in between.
@callnight1441

I dont know; i've met people with both tall and short parents and they usually end up being average height
@bookaufman9643
@bookaufman9643 2 жыл бұрын
@@callnight1441 I think that you're trying to say the average height between the two parents. My point was that if you have a very tall parent and a regular size parent you tend to be one or the other. People don't pick up their height genes from both parents in equal measure.. Almost anybody who's crazy tall has a crazy tall person in their genetic line but most people don't end up being an average of two different genetic lines. So my point was that if your father was a giant you would have a chance of being a giant but you would probably not be the middle between the Giants and the regular height parent.

@@bookaufman9643 Height is a polygenetic trait. There is more than one gene that affects height. It isn’t just one or the other. In fact, there are at least three genes with six alleles.

Idk about the Umbers, seems likely enough to me. But I gotta disagree on the Clegane brothers, those two monsters MUST have giants blood somewhere along their family tree. That OR magic was involved with their births.
@wyattblaine7066
@wyattblaine7066 Жыл бұрын
Hodor definitely has giants blood. The umbers too. Probably not Dunc though, he was just tall. If he had any ties to the north his chances would get better, but he was from Flea Bottom, his parents would potentially be from kings landing or the crown lands. Even if they were from a further region, northerners aren’t common that far south.
