What ratio of acetone to charcoal do you use? What particular brand and type of charcoal do you use? Where to get the best prices?
@judithgoulden9723 жыл бұрын
I am addicted to charcoal. Can't get near my oil paints. Pouring the wet charcoal is amazing. Fabulous painting. I guess I should get a mask, I usually spray with acetone outside. Is the paper academia.? I am using fabriano designo, a bit more tooth but will try the academia as I have a roll somewhere. I look forward to more of your videos. Thanks for taking the time to share.
@stirlingcaiulo3 жыл бұрын
Yes academia, comes in 10m rolls which I love to use :) Thanks so much, good luck trying the technique!

what could you reccomend as a good covering white pencil that doesnt disturb charcoal underneath when you add in highlights, adjust tonal strength etc? I've used generals with fair results, derwent useless (too hard). currently using Pitt white chalk (with diy charcoal crayons), but would prefer a pencil option

I've mixed charcoal powder with acetone, but somehow, Charcoal doesn't blend with acetone, and instead, it sits down at the bottom. Could you tell me how to do exactly?

Thanks for doing these, Stirling! Couple of questions if you have time. 1- Does the paper have be sized? 2- what is the “average” ratio of powdered charcoal/ acetone in your initial washes? Love your work, BTW. Thanks, again!
@stirlingcaiulo3 жыл бұрын
Happy to :) Not sure what you mean by the first question, but the ratio is about 1:5 powder to acetone. I keep a test piece of paper on hand though, it should just be at the level where the charcoal isn't clumping and its not too watery
@wittesend3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Stirling! Sorry about being unclear in my first question. Here is a better explanation: Sizing is used during paper manufacture to reduce the paper's tendency when dry to absorb liquid, with the goal of allowing inks and paints to remain on the surface of the paper and to dry there, rather than be absorbed into the paper. This is more typically done on watercolor paper than strict drawing papers.

@@wittesend Oh I see, nice to learn a new term! It doesn't as acetone evaporates so quickly, I've even tried on the thinnest copy paper and it still works
@wittesend3 жыл бұрын
Ah, ok! Most excellent. I have tried an alcohol charcoal slurry in an initial wash and had bad results. I am hoping what you describe will work for me as well as it works for you! Thank you for being so generous with your time and expertise, Stirling!

Have seen where animators have at times reverted from traditional methods, and used dry media in this manner for impromptu works due to climactic conditions, or for strings of quickly rendered works to preserve the immediacy of line and value. The only difference was the carrier not being acetone as both its volatile nature and solvent smell is rather objectionable to many. I'll not reflect upon their specific use of vehicle, as it may be a concern for the originators' of the method they employed. A work that large would surely benefit from some protective barrier to prevent loss of pigment and your intentional deposits of other dry media in conjunction with the foundations you poured onto the support before beginning its manipulation. It truly is a very powerful statement, well illustrating your prowess with this experimental enterprise. It is most indicative of your talents. Thanks.

Thanks so much, reminds of some Manga too, where they need to cover a lot of ground quickly with ink to create texture. I prefer to use canvas over paper for that reason, and its easy to gesso over any mistakes.

What a cool medium! I've never seen anything quite like this before. Does the acetone mixture become safe to touch once it dries?
@stirlingcaiulo3 жыл бұрын
It’s super fun to work with! Yeah the acetone evaporates super quick, but can work with a blending stump if you don’t want to touch the charcoal powder :)
