I love it It's just refreshing to see techniques like charcoal used in a simple expressive manner, opposite to very detailed and meticulous approaches. Both are cool but I lean more toward expressive representations and this "visual emphasis" i guess.

I've watched a lot of Charcoal videos, but this one really highlighted a few fundamentals I would like to change in my own drawings. I've lost the roughness of charcoal over the years and I want to bring it back. Giving it a shot after watching this. I couldn't recommend this video more to any artist, at least Charcoal artist.

Something I always do it put too many details, and end up with a somewhat cluttered and busy drawing. I need to remember to capture the feel of the subject, not necessarily all the exact details. I loved this video btw! That's one cool pug :)

Whoaaa, i looove seeing the progress of the piece going from simple lines to something so realistic piece by piece .. p.s. when you brought up blind contouring, i had no idea what it was but then you explained it, turns out, ive been doing it for years bc it helps me proportion when drawing from reference .. good to know i’m doing something right 😅

I've been using charcoal casually for a couple years (self taught) but this video completely changed how I do things... Specifically the simple technique of rubbing charcoal elsewhere and smearing the dust on the paper. I just never thought to do that, I feel a bit dumb. But it makes a really nice effect as a base or background.

Nice pug! And about wanting to know when you're done, it reminded me of something a teacher of mine used to say: "You know when that happens?.. When you mentally ask: "Am I done?"... That's when you should stop, take a breather, look at your piece the following day, and if you still think it needs more work, then do so, but in many cases, you'll just go: "Oh, I'm done!"

how do you keep your charcial drawings safe when it is finished, so that the charcoal will not be disturbed or destroyed (sorry, my english is not perfect). greetings from germany. chris.
@Peppershaker7 жыл бұрын
guiza christiane you can store them with a sheet of wax paper over the charcoal to prevent it from getting on other art. or you can buy a fixative spray to keep it in place. I hope this helped!
@gum3077 жыл бұрын
hairspray would be a cheap and fast way to replace fixative just in case you need it right now. be sure the spray has enough time to dry out

What is the best way to learn? I LOVE DRAWING but I had no background of it. We never learnt it in school when I was in junior high-school cause there's no one to learn from. So I decided to lock myself in my room for six months and break my limit in drawing. In the end, i can only identify what is good and what is not pretty fairly now ( which I couldn't back in the day- i only saw what I thought was good but not really) but I have no idea how to do stuff. What should I do? workshops? how do i look for workshops? all Canada has is work ethic. PLs help?

If you are using a photo, can we see it, too? That way, we can see what you do AND why you are doing it. What kind of charcoal are you using? Willow, vine, compressed? What IS that white stuff? Instead of adding white, could you just erase some of the charcoal and return those areas back to the value of the paper? Is it a white and black dog or a tan and black dog? We don't know because we can't see your reference.
