I also kept thinking I was re-reading The Virgin Suicides, and I read that one maybe 2 years before! Same half-creepy, half-magical atmosphere. I don't know how I feel about this book, I enjoyed reading it for sure but it left a strage taste in my mouth. A bit of a "do we really need to read about murders?" kind of a feeling. But then I read it after the "Dublin Murder Squad" series (which incidentally I highly recommend) and another book on domestic violence so it might have been my fault heheh.

I recently suffered from a similar comparison. I was reading a Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, a dense and richly imagined historical fiction/fantasy novel set in the 19th century. Then I read The Night Circus, a really hyped historical fiction/fantasy novel set in the 19th century, which fell remarkably flat for me. I don't know if I would have liked the Night Circus if I hadn't just read the other, but it was a huge disappointment, especially after so much building up from what I thought were reliable sources. Bit of a bummer, really.
