Hi Everyone! This video covers an entry level or stage 1 street tune for a 2017 Dodge Charger Police package with the 5.7 Hemi and the W5A580 5 speed transmission. I use HP Tuners and cover spark fuel and transmission tuning.

Not much info on the internet about hemi tuning until I found his channel wish I found this first before buying the hemi book from the tuning school

@TimothyStillwell, yes there is a lot missing from that series of books. There is more information in HPTuners forums on engine tuning at least. I just got my supercharger + camshaft tune done for my 5.7 Hemi and most of the information was from HPT forums.

Great video. I’m trying to learn how to tune Hemi cars. Just getting into HP tuners and trying to learn all I can before I start trying to mess with mine. If possible could I also get a copy of this tune and do you think this would also be similar for a 6.1 car? I have both a 5.7 magnum and 6.1 SRT charger. Both nag1 cars.

Is there any way to remove the auto up shift when in manual mode? It doesn’t happen often but sometimes it will up shift to the next gear once I’m in the higher rpm’s I have a 8hp70

I am not sure on that one. Maybe increase the shift rpm for the gear you want to stay in while in the manual mode shift settings. Just a guess. Let me know what you figure out!

This video is a little dated but you can turn off traction control other ways that won’t cause the lights to pop up

Is there a way to adjust my transmission to stay in 4th gear until around 50 mph this car wants to shift straight to 5 gear around 35 or 40 mph I live in an area with a lot of hills it’s never flat I want it to stay in 4th till 50 mph

Shift speed is based on transmission output shaft speed so try increasing those numbers by 5% or 10% and see what that does for you.

What octane you run in your car with this tune

Always run the highest octane you can, but if you have to buy garbage gas the knock sensors will pull timing when they detect knock or pre-ignition. This tune is not setup for 93 octane only, this car is street driven and garbage gas is out there.

Hey Chris, i copied your trans tune info and gonna go plug it in my pursuit and hopefully the write will take. I'm having issues with this car it's driving me batshit crazy. It randomly shuts off(but will restart right away) without warning nad it does not matter what the conditions are it's like a mail carrier, it'll do it when ever. When this happens i get a u0100 code lost communication with ECM/PCM and then last night I get the tcm throwing me a p0700. I pulled the PCM and checked the wires they look ok i dont see any breaks im the wires and the canbus wires look ok, tried running it this morning same issue loses comms and got the tcm error except now it will only run for a max of 30 seconds. i pulled the TCM and it looks fine like its never been touched nothing smells burnt except my sanity. The tcm code is transient i'll get it one moment and not the next. I thought it was the computer for sure because the voltage regulator is fried and i had to bypass it and run an external. The other thing is when the PCM communication is lost the dongle loses connection at the obdii port as well and i have to pull all the cables and reload hptuners otherwise it doesnt see the dongle and that gets annoying when you have to do that every 30 seconds. Have you ever ran across a ghost in the machine like this? I apologize for the fricken book i wrote here. jeezus thats a mouth ful up there. FYI alldata has jack squat on trouble shooting transient power loss to the pcm or tcm wit hthose two codes together. Thanks man laters!

@ahotmess2261 I have not run into that exact problem - no. But I have been tracing MIL codes that list can bus communications with the trans module, abs and stability control. I changed the wheel sensors and reset the computer by pulling the battery for 5 min. The CAN bus errors went away by now my AWD system has a failure. I would take it to a shop that has a pro scan tool and get some good diagnosis. I am probablly going to take that step as well. Good luck!

It may be cheaper to buy the scan tool to check your trans go to habor frieght and get their top end scanner there its like $289 plus tax. It'll connect to all the moduiels on your car and run tests on them if you need to run them. Make sure its got the latest update on it. Then you'll always have the tool when needed in the future and with Dodge thats a given plus its still way cheaper than taking it to a garage to have them plug a scanner into the obdii port and charge you an hour for a 5 minute code retreival from the trans controller.

Regarding my issue i pulled the pcm and took it to the company that flashed it for me in Cininnati and they diagnostics on it. It came back ok except the VR was bad so I got ahold of my guy at the dealership and i had him check the troubleshooting database for my issue and came up with nothing he talked to one of the older mechanics there and he ran into that issue one time and he seems to think its probably a bad coil back feeding into the PCM causing it to reset vs actually frying it. when it does that it resets the connection and the TCM loses signal to the PCM setting the U0100 & p0700 and triggering a mil and when the PCM resets finds itself running FROM the data feed from the motor and trans and it stays running or it dies while it runs a self check depending where the motor is at rpm wise. If it is above 3k rpm there is a 50/50 chance of it only stumbling as it tries to recover and not dieing if it can get thru the self check before it drops under 1k rpm. If the motor is idling it dies but will restart right away. I'm curious i'm sure you have the bas esp light and abs/brake lights up on the dash when you turn traction control off, correct? I cant get traction control to turn back on?

@@ahotmess2261 Thats great info! I have a constant misfire code as well so maybe I have a coil pack issue as well. I tune 8.1 Chevrolets and I can datalog the misfire to the specific coil pack, maybe I can do the same with the Dodge? Sounds like a similar problem and worth looking into. Thank you very much!

@@CarswellsCustomsDo you know if hptuner requires a license to write to the NAG1 i know they do for the 8spd. but cant find anything on there site for the older 5 spds. When tryinng to write to the trans controller i get a x7F Error negative response code from the TCM when it goes to run a check on te OS prior to writing and i only have 2 options for the trans and thats is do not write or write entire Now i'm second guessing myself that the trans controller isn't bad now icant connect to it with hotuners nore my el cheapo hand scanner that works on everything and maybe thats is the whole problem or maybe its just half the problem or i'm jsut chasinmg ghosts all though when running injector pusle width and voltage in scanner on every injector to make sure its not a bad injector back feeding into the pcm i've had that happen to me on a GM 4banger i'm finding the whole passenger bank is significantly below the drivers side for volts right when it dies.
