Vera dear, did you know that, in their younger years, between 9 -12 yrs old, Charice Pempenco & Katrina Velarde were fierce competitors in singing competitions. Charice would win some & lose some to Katrina. Winning small town competitions would very much help their family as Charice's battered mother, who left her father as he was always drunk. Katrina likewise, needed to win as his father was a carpenter and had an on & off job. Winning small competitions would help Katrina send her 5 siblings to school.

charice and katrina always met in every town fiesta's singing competitions when they were younger before they became famous.. charice became popular first when she was a runner up in a televised competion then became a youtube sensation and became popular worldwide when she had a guestingbon oprah.. whennkatrina velarde auditioned for a talent search, charice was one of the judges and charice noticed her and charice herself told the story of how she and katrina always met on every singing competion (non-televised amateur singing contests) back in the days..

Great. Lots more to hear of Charice. But if you want to hear some of the early videos, try looking up her appearance on Oprah or Ellen who brought her over from the Philippines to be on their shows. Also check out the performance with Celine Dion which Oprah helped organise - these all when Charice was younger. Also more to see of her collaboration with mentor David Foster.

To have such a voice at the age of 13, I think, at that time she was singing this is something to behold. Oprah was wowed when she sang several times in her show. Celine Dion made a duet with her and so did Andrea Bocelli and Josh Groban, and other well-known singers as well. The one accompanying her at the piano was David Foster who composed the Prayer along with other songs which she knew coincidentally. Charice became known for Whitney Huoston covers in the US. You can see her development as a singer in KZbin starting at a young age participating in Phil. competitions to bring food to the table all the way to her US stints. She was able to come out with an international album but wasn't marketed aggresively. Her voice quality,along with other artists like the Filipino artists you reacted to, is what it really needed in the autotuned-dominated music world to show the world what a human voice can still create and achieve when they are nurtured and not just rely on technology to make voices sound better. She could have been more famous now had she pursued her career but I guess her path was not in the direction of stardom.
