Sometimes we know for sure we’ve done something to make people dislike us. But other times it’s less obvious and the slap isn’t the only thing that is causing Will to receive such backlash - there were several more common mistakes that turned people against him.
That’s why in this video we’ll cover 3 of the more subtle things Will did so you can avoid these mistakes in your own life. We will also get into the real reason why Will Smith hit Chris Rock, something I have not seen anyone else talk about yet.
⏰TIMESTAMPS⏰
0:00 - Intro
0:24 - Mistake #1: Triangulating yourself into your significant other's relationships
1:40 - Mistake #2: Dodging ownership of bad behavior
3:12 - Mistake #3: Carrying emotional baggage to your interactions

Normally I'd agree... but the dude legit advocated for the conscious use of psychedelics without any back up or evidence. As far as I know Charlie isn't a doctor, I don't think it's really ethetical to plant those ideas into the minds of people dealing with trauma to use drugs, because a percentage of those people are going to be inclined to be addicts. I"m not saying what he said is wrong.... what I'm saying is it's more responsible to add a ton of caveates and addendums to a statement like that.

It all makes sense when you break it down like this and look at Will's childhood trauma. He has carried the guilt from not being able to protect his mother his whole life. What he needs to realize is that it was never his job to protect his mother. She and his father were supposed to protect him. What Will needs is to feel protected more than to protect others. I wish him peace and healing. Sad the way things happened but I think he and everyone need our compassion more than our judgement. Everyone has trauma and breaking points.

I grew up poor and with an abusive dad. I always thought I was pretty self aware, but I didn't realize that my "hardworking" mentality is fueled by financial anxiety even though I'm in a good place but I constantly make myself miserable at jobs for no reason. I think about it constantly. I remember watching my mother cry because she was embarrassed her card got declined because my dad spent the money. A stranger hugged her and paid for the groceries. We didn't talk about it when we got in the car and I have never spoken about it once. However, I think about it a lot. Now I have that random fear and check my bank account all the time when there is no reason outside of identity theft, that the money won't be there. Crazy how I never thought about any of this. Because my dad's moods were everywhere from laughing and joking non stop to rage at the drop of a hat, I get worried when my boyfriend seems off like he's gonna explode or be cruel (he never does). I'm aware that can be an insecure/annoying trait so I avoid letting him know that I'm worried about it and try to just internalize it but it effects me more than I'd ever like to admit to him. I'm gonna work on these. Maybe start by verbalizing to him or a friend that I'm kinda anxious and weird about money. I feel like I'll feel better when I finally say it to someone I know and love.

It's good you recognize it now. That way you can process it fully and move on from it. I recently realized that the reason I can't let go of this huge chip I have on my shoulder is because I think if I do then I will stop being so hardworking. The truth is that I would probably only gain clarity and peace. Just in case it comes up for you, you don't have to hold onto it to be hardworking.

Hi Jessica, your story made me tear up. I know what that is like. I’m 39 now and I’ve come a long way, and I can tell you that you’re very probably dealing with some complex post traumatic responses and understanding more about that will help you so much. Survivors always tell ourselves that things could have been worse, we’re fine, we’re tough and we soldier on. We minimize the pain and then usually don’t fully understand how truly horrible the experiences really were. We have trouble validating that, feeling safe, and feeling worthy of love. And you probably have no idea how much of that is going on within you. If it’s possible for you to afford therapy there are online programs you could try. Therapy can be absolutely life changing. There are also some PTSD workbooks and dialectical behavioral therapy workbooks and some stuff like that you can get on Amazon or other bookstores and try doing a couple pages a day in the evenings. It can’t hurt. It can only help. From one daughter of an abusive man to another- you never deserved that. I’m sorry your mom didnt feel strong enough to save you from that. She probably had no idea how sick she was from what she was experiencing. I will be praying for you tonight! Don’t be afraid to try some of those books or therapy video-conference services. I can tell you, they truly changed my life

Finally. This is the first video I’ve seen since the Oscar’s incident that directly links Will’s childhood trauma of his abusive father beating his mother to him slapping Chris Rock. Every other commentary somehow cites Jada’s past infidelity as the root of Will’s issues rather than another symptom of a deeper cause. When I first heard about Will’s alcoholic father and childhood trauma, I’ve been disappointed so few people have connected the dots. This breakdown is both insightful and sobering in showing how easy it is for the best of us to suppress our traumas through adulthood and, if we don’t deal with them, let them rise up in ugly public moments that could tarnish our reputation permanently. I had such an incident where my own primal and angry reaction to something very innocuous truly surprised me. I had the same initial reaction of pride and shame (similar to Will during his acceptance speech) due to my conflicting emotions. It was only after years of therapy I was able to face my outbursts and truly begin to own my behaviour. That has been a huge help in me dealing with my own childhood traumas. I truly hope Will Smith sees this video and gets the help he needs.

I'm so glad Charlie is back. I stopped watching Charisma on Command when Ben started narrating the videos. I think Ben knows and understands a lot about Charisma, but somehow doesn't narrate in a way to engage me. When Ben makes the videos, it seems very mathematical, e.g. "Just do this and you'll get this result"... but when Charlie makes the video, it seems very organic... this is just my honest feedback exclusively about the way Ben and Charlie are narrating. Thanks for the video! It's been a while since I felt that I got a lot of value from one of Charisma on Command's videos. Keep up the good work, guys!

From what I know, Charlie wants to step back from production as much as possible. The lads want a business which could operate without them, a sentiment rooted in their appreciation for the 4HWH's philosophy.

I truly love this channel & I'm so glad you're recycling some of your previous topics bc they're becoming more and more relevant today. My biggest complaint is that YT is on a censorship/shadow-banning free-for-all & the viewers of this channels have got some of best ideas and are some of most compassionate ppl on the internet. It's such a disheartening thing that we used to have great "conversations" in the comment sections, but now when I click on the "View 10 replies" under an original post, sometimes even not one will show up. I hope YT doesn't delete this comment. They're completely random & not adhering to their own TOS. Anyway, "Charisma on Command", the one thing I wanted to add on topic is that it seems younger ppl aren't willing to work out their differences with older generations. I often hear only blaming & a one-sided "dialog", which focuses solely on all the mistakes made by their mothers & fathers and older extended family. I have no doubt that this is the case in some situations; however, without the risk of being amendable to just have a real discussion with their families & NOT have it be a verbal diarrhea of all sins committed since they were born drudged up & dumped on everyone's lap without reciprocation or allowances made for redress (& NOT the "sorry, not sorry", or any of the techniques that Will used here, but clear, concise explanations, told from an adult's perspective~bc children do NOT see everything that's going on), there seems to chance at true healing. No way to bring families together. And whilst these young adults may say they're fine with that; they've moved on & "made their own new families". Nothing in this world can replace your family of origin. Separating & breaking apart families is the FIRST thing that Communists/Fascists/Marxists do when they take over a nation. That's why it's scary it's happening here. Mao famously had his Youth Groups report on their parents, so did HitIer & StaIin. Maybe Charisma on Command could do a video aimed specifically on that? Thanks so much for reading this far. Have a Blessed Day

I've seen the hate comments Will has been getting and personally I don't believe he should be cancelled because of this incident which I agree was wrong. He has worked long and hard to build this legacy he created for almost 30 years, and to lose all this is devastating. I really believe that person that walked up on that stage was not the real Will. I believe he did snap and was triggered. It was an overreaction, but this is someone who is in pain and deeply hurting. He has had a clean image as a public figure for 3 decades...no DUIs, no arrests, no criminal offense...and this happens. I believe he lost control because of all the emotional stress he has bottled up and it manifested into rage. I believe he is capable of redeeming himself and doing the work to salvage his image.

Thank you for making this analysis. I felt so bad for him because people are so cruel on social media and forget that everyone can be triggered somehow and make mistakes. I didn't know about his mom, is clear that at the moment we are only able to see the surface. You presented evidence and a a good reminder of why we need to work on empathy.

Wow. Thank you for this. I really looked up to Will Smith and though I realize he is a human being with limitations and problems like everyone else, I NEEDED to have this conversation. I just couldn’t make sense of what happened with that incident with Chris. THANK YOU for this fuller, more balanced perspective that ALSO focuses on self. I would love to hear your thoughts on Chris’s reaction to having been hit. Was it a good example and healthy response, was it not? How can we learn and grow personally through this? Your thoughts, Charlie?

I used to think about all the other people that could use whatever message I was hearing (most often at church lol). But started improving once I listened for myself. Good points but I honestly still think Jada is toxic and he deserves better. How she can call an affair an "entanglement" and totally downplay the situation is so toxic and a textbook example of gaslighting. If the roles were reversed and Will was the one to sleep with someone the same age as their children he would be demonized to no end and I'm POSITIVE Jada would have used that to her advantage.

Excellent video, great points all round. Really think this is something a lot of guys need to be taking on board. Particularly agree about how it's not his place to protect Jada like that over a joke. I think it was wrong for Chris Rock to make that joke, in that place at that time. It's the Oscars, not a roast. She clearly didn't like it and was well within her rights if she wanted to call him out, then or later. But that's her choice, whether she wants to turn the joke into an event, a headline. That's what Will did by getting up there and smacking him, he's taking control of the situation away from her. Now everyone's talking about the joke and what he did. Then he gives the kind of excuse you might get from a domestic abuser... Bad form, Will.
