There is an art to ... being able to take, what appears to be on the face of it, two random and seemingly disparate items, but you assist the listener, to make the connection on their own. Another way is to turn a double entendre, back on the other person, as it their mind that's "in the gutter" when you were leading them the entire time. Cerebral gymnastics are a hoot

Seriously? So you didn't get how him explaining that Ryan replaced generic phrases with things that conjure funny visuals makes the process of learning to be funny less abstract and gives you a clearer idea of what to go for? Why can't people accept that social skills are SKILLS? As in stuff that you'll inevitably suck at in the beginning, regardless of whatever advice you get, and that you'll have to practice and fail repeatedly before you can be good at it. Just because a piece of advice won't make you instantly funnier doesn't mean it's bad advice. If you think it is then you just don't understand how skills work.

Next video: "how to fly" "IT MAY SOUND DIFFICULT, BUT YOU CAN DO IT WITH A LITTLE PRACTICE..."
@victorlima2242 жыл бұрын
Here’s what you have to do. The main thing that flying requires is the ability to throw yourself at the ground and miss. You must throw yourself forward with all your weight and the willingness not to mind that it's going to hurt, however it will surely hurt if you fail to miss the ground. The difficulty is in missing the ground, and doing so accidentally, as deliberately intending to miss the ground does not work.
@victorlima2242 жыл бұрын
It is also advisable not to listen to what others may say, as they could say something such as: "Good God, man, you can't possibly be flying!". It is vitally important not to believe them or they will suddenly be right, and you will find yourself failing to miss the ground once again.

The key here is instead of answering questions directly and dryly, make your responses into stories. This can draw out conversations and keep the small talk to an absolute minimum. But remember to not make everything about yourself. Context of a situation matters.
@skepticusmaximus184 Жыл бұрын
But don't forget when making your responses into stories, to avoid the Abe Simpson effect... "We can't bust heads like we used to. But we have our ways. One trick is to tell stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for m'shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. 'Gimme five bees for a quarter,' you'd say. Now where were we...oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones..."

@Keep300 Yeah, it's about delivery really, you can keep things from getting long-winded (because nobody likes people who talk too much), but making sure to give people enough rope to keep the conversation and interesting. But honestly, if you're good at asking questions and focusing on the person instead of yourself, that would probably help more than telling stories imo. It's a balance ig

There is an aptitude in being clever in the timing and sensitivity. Right brained or left brained would certainly factor into an ability to be on point in burning someone while still making them laugh. I was a Creative Producer in Media and Events and maybe this helped in my delivery and content. A Bio-Chemist or a Certified Public Accountant might lack the timing and ability to pull such things off. Or it may be so awkward that it’s hilarious.

He laughed and gave me 5 minutes to sit down.

I've been called witty, but it definitely has a down side. Making a bunch of people crack up is great, but in the past I was known to be verbally abusive and a bully. I've been in and out of therapy for over 20 years, and witty remarks are a coping mechanism for me. Now, I have a career in entertainment where I can use language creatively, but I'm still learning to bite my tongue. All I'm saying is... if you learn to be witty, things might fly out of your mouth before you realize it. And while busting up a room feels nice, don't let it be at the expense of someone else even if they're not in the room. I still carry so much shame from hurtful things I've said.
