Note: Click "Show More" for lyrics, and see my KZbin Channel for an HD version of this song that also includes the spoken bridge in the middle that is missing from this version. This seems to be a polarizing song, people either love it or hate it. I expect a lot of thumbs up and thumbs down on this one :)
From Wiki:
Charlene Marilynn D'Angelo (born June 1, 1950, Hollywood, California) is an American R&B singer best known as Charlene. She is known for her 1982 popular song "I've Never Been to Me", and is considered a one-hit-wonder. Charlene originally recorded "I've Never Been to Me" in 1976, and the single reached #97 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 1977. When released again in 1982, the single reached #3 in the United States (US), and #1 by June 1982, in the UK Singles Chart. The song has been her only Top 40 hit.
In 1982, Tampa, Florida disc jockey Scott Shannon, then at WRBQ, started playing the song at the behest of a girlfriend, by which time Charlene had lost her recording contract, moved to England and was working in a sweetshop in Ilford, London. Audience reaction was impressive, resulting in the song's second release with the original spoken bridge. The second release was a hit in England as well.
When the song was first released in the US in 1976, Charlene's legal name was Charlene Duncan from her marriage to record producer Larry Duncan; by the time the song was released in 1982, her name was Charlene Oliver by her subsequent marriage to Englishman Jeff Oliver. The single reached the top of the US pop and adult contemporary charts that year, and the concurrent release of her album I've Never Been to Me, was also relatively successful. The single was one of the year's biggest hits, and the video for the song was filmed at Blickling Hall, Norfolk, England and Charlene wore the wedding dress that she got married in.
"I've Never Been to Me" was featured as the opening song to the 1994 film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. The song is mimed onstage by two Sydney drag queens at the Imperial Hotel in Erskineville, Sydney, Australia. The latter performance includes a scene where a plastic "baby doll" (actually a rubber chicken) is hurled into the audience by one of the performing drag queens.
Lyrics:
I've Never Been To Me (R. Miller / K. Hirsch - Motown Records, Inc)
Hey lady, you lady
Cursing at your life
You're a discontented mother
And a regimented wife
I 've no doubt
You dream about the things you never do
But I wish someone had talked to me like I wanna talk to you
Oh, I've been to Georgia and California and anywhere I could run
Took the hand of a preacher man
And we made love in the sun
But I ran out of places and friendly faces
Because I had to be free
I've been to paradise but I've never been to me...
Please lady please lady
Don't just walk away
Cause I have this need to tell you
Why I'm all alone today
I can see so much of me still living in your eyes
Won't you share a part of a weary heart that has lived a million lives
Oh, I've been to Nice and the isle of Greece
When I sipped champagne on a yacht
I moved like Harlow in Monte Carlo
And showed them what I've got
I've been undressed by kings
And I've seen some things that a woman ain't s'pose to see
I've been to paradise but I've never been to me...
Hey, you know what paradise is?
It's a lie
A fantasy we created about people and places as we like them to be
But you know what truth is?
it's that little baby you're holding
And it's that man you fought with this morning
The same one you are gonna make love to tonight
That's truth, that's love
Sometimes I've been to crying for unborn children
That might have made me complete
But I, I took the sweet life
I never knew I'd be bitter from the sweet
I spent my life exploring
The subtle whoring
That costs too much to be free
Hey lady I've been to paradise
But I've never been to me...
I've been to paradise but I've never been to me...

This song saved my life. I was in an abusive relationship. Beaten every day. I played this song all the time and listened to the words. It gave me the strength to walk away from the relationship and seek out the life that this lady had lived. It is a song that is very dear to my heart.

This was my mother's favourite song. A young girl with 4 children by 29 who she loved dearly.... She sacrificed a lot, yet just as she had began her journey to 'me' she was sadly taken.... I used to hear her sing this song in the house, but being a child it was insignificant, and she appeared old and ancient back then. I'm now the age my mother was when she passed, and I listen back to this song and it's lyrics with a truly different mind. It is nostalgic and sadly tragic at the same time, but I promised my mother that I would embrace my life and remain humble and honest, grateful and live life to the fullest..... I wish she was hear to enjoy that place that she sang about all those years ago, and one day got to get to go to 'me' ❤

This was me in my 20's, doing whatever I wanted to do, living by my own rules. Queen of the ball, life of the party. There is a very heavy price to pay when you live in such a shallow place. Praise God for His mercy, grace, love, compassion. I am so blessed with a loving husband, three children, and six grandchildren. Is my life "glamorous"? Probably not but I wouldn't trade the budgeting for tournaments for soccer, baseball, cheerleading, basketball for all the European trips and cruises in the world. Paradise is being at peace with the Lord and all of His riches including our families. 🙏

@@BillDerBergno. Religion is a man made concept in the traditional sense of being given a set of rules. I believe in spirituality that coincides with general principles but for me, finding peace within myself, experiencing the joy of motherhood, attaining satisfaction in a job I loved, striving for a balance in life provided more satisfaction than living life that was just never enough. This was my personal journey. We're all different and I see nothing wrong with going out to have a good time and meet people. You mention religion and for me, fanaticism in anything can leave you feeling drained. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My mother sings like how she sings, almost the same. I remember when I was a child, she always sing songs like these and I always clung to her and will look at me and to my father every time she would sing the line "I've been to paradise". I always thought until now that the next line is "and I wil never mean to leave." But now she only sings it for me and my 2 sister. My father died when I was only 8 years old and my sister had just turned 1 and my mother was also 4 months pregnant that time. Now she is a overseas Filipino worker in Syria. Bravely raising me and my siblings alone. I've never been sweet to her now unlike when I was young but, I am really blessed to have a mother like her. I really really am. Now that father's day is coming near. I wish my father in heaven to be happy and also to my mother who also has been a father to us since 2008. I love you ma. I'll make sure that in the near future, I will be a successful man that will carry-on Papa's dream for us. Just wait a little longer, I always hold onto that one thing.

The singer of this song was my boyfriend for 4 and a 1/2 yes do you have the purpose for this song which I can't reveal. Use your imagination I said boyfriend after 30 years of marriage my husband passed away his wife passed away we both had 2 children we both had grandchildperiod but things aren't always the way they seemed. Whatever the reason was we were the best companion to the whole wide world and the love we shared together he said he never experienced before period again oil is not what it seems to be but he said listen to the words of this song it's my life. So different people have different reasons for loving this song but it's the song on my cell phone it's beautiful, It's wonderful. One of poor language best Written songs. Frank Sinatra executed it beautifully. And my boyfriend saying it great just take a look at him and figure it out. Hes one of the best unfortunately he passed away it'll before years March 15th

When this song came out I was dating a beautiful, blonde Irish chick from the Bronx who was a devout Catholic. On our 2nd this song came on WABC and I turned it up. She looked at me askance, "You don't like this crap, do ya?" "Yea," I replied. "I hope you only like the tune and not those ignorant words, otherwise I don't hold much hope for this relationship." I found out later that the lyrics that were nettling her morality were at 2:20: "I been cryin' for unborn children that might have made me complete, but I took the sweet life," hahahahaahah And also, "I spent my life exploring the subtle whoring,"

Thank God that I met this song! I’m totally related to the discontent mother and regimented wife....(being a mother of two boys for 10 years) I’ve been thinking of running away. Wanna start my life all over again and pursue my real happiness.... But now I know what true love is! The lyrics are so touching and make me think what real happiness is! I’ve realized actually it’s just because I’ve been taking care of these three men but myself. After I communicated with my hubby and let him know I need some my own time. I’ve also shared my chores with my boys and it went well! Now that I’m listening to this song again, I’m so thankful that I didn’t make some stupid choices 😜!

When I was 28 I thought of running away from home, my husband, and our two daughters. Life seemed so stifling compared to “my plan.” I stayed, we had another daughter, my husband was the love of my life. I had an amazing career while raising my family. One day I realized I was living MY life that I needed, not the fantasy life that I thought I wanted. My husband died from cancer after 35 years of marriage; I was devastated and if it were not for my 3 adult daughters I would be utterly lost. At 67, I am beginning to travel and realize I found ME when I was 22 and married; 25, 27, and 29 when I had daughters. This is just a bonus on the top of my life because I found me so long ago.

My marriage still didn't go well after all the efforts that I had put in, which didn't really echo to my comments above. So, I decided to have legal separation. I just needed to survive! It's been exactly 1 yr now. I've had myself a wonderful yet exciting journey. Thank God I didn't meet "bad" guys😅 It's funny that after I took a serious decision, he got shocked and started to work on his anxiety issue. Now he's really improving and begging me to give him another chance. I told him I'm not interested in any relationship at this moment. I felt I'm in control after my journey. Why do I feel that singers in the last few decades before 2000 are so talented n amazing? They seem to be able to sing live so well n effortlessly n most importantly soulfully. Singing with soul is really hard to find these days... I love this song when I heard it in the 90s from a compilation album. Only found this live 2 decades later, I don't think I have heard anything better than this! really very well sung!

America in the 70s, in particular, was a fleeting meritocracy for the arts, when bullshit was hard to swallow following a bad war and superficiality could take a backseat to talent. 80s had its merits but by their end all turned to bad business. Eventually, you lose a sophisticated audience and can sell garbage, hence the 90s and later. In the end, there's no need to invest time and money in fostering when you can sell a low-grade product. I imagine playing today's music to us back then. I suppose they'd ask, "what happened!"

I came here two years ago and saw the same thing. The lesson I learned was....you really can brainwash the next generation if you hold your breath long enough. It's a selfish shit-bucket song. The message is pretty clear, the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence and when men and women get a clue, it might be too late for them. a relationship takes work and sometimes neither party want to work at it. My grandparents were married over 80 years and my grand mother was hit and she hit back and she was a true inspiration to me in my life and my parents were married 57 years another inspiration.

I may not be one of them but I always get emotional and cry whenever i sing this song..I feel her pain and regrets..how she enjoy life to the fullest being with the rich and famous ,sex and abortions, then later on she realized everything was a lie,she was not truly happy and regreted all her actions.how she wished someone had talk to her out of it.
