Charles was a French Armenian singer, with a great vibrato tenor voice. He was known as France's Frank Sinatra and sold over 180 million records during his career. This is absolutely a beautifully written song with thought worthy lyrics and beautiful instrumentation along with Charle's excellent delivery. It has been covered by Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, Andy Williams and Dusty Springfield to name a few. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Hein. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

In the French-speaking world (especially France and Quebec) Charles Aznavour was huge. Too many titles to mention here, but La Bohème ( also about the passage of time) , Tu te laisses aller (about a man not looking at his wife the way he used to) and Les bateaux (a young man yearning for the freedom to be a sailor) are a few of his gems.

I don’t know why, but I read “French American singer” and it boggled my mind. Then I thought: he was Armenian, right?, and re-read it to see that was what you actually wrote. 😅

Aznavour composed this wonderful, awesome song. But there is also a great, amazing cover version of this song by the late Dusty Springfield. I always lovd this song, and both, the harmonies and the lyrics too !!!

Bob Dylan has often cited Charles Aznavour as one of his favorite singer songwriters. He talks of seeing him at Carnegie Hall in the early 60’s.

Well, as it was written by Charles Aznavour, I'll stick with his original! Roy Clark's version did well in the USA, but few people know him anywhere else, while Aznavour is known worldwide......... except the USA!! THAT'S how irony works!! 🤣

I first saw Charles on the Dame Edna show many, many years ago, he sang “The Old Fashioned Way”, there are videos of him singing this, I love this song. “She” is another great song, there is an official video for this one. After seeing him on Dame Edna I bought his greatest hits on 8 track, then eventually on cd every song is wonderful

Charles Aznavour was Armenian/French, hence the strong accent, which I think was one of his his greatest assets, plus of course, his ability to 'live' the lyrics he's singing!

Was only aware of Roy Clark's marvelous rendition. I looked up this gentleman and discovered that he is the man who actually penned this lovely song. His performance is a bit different than Clarks hit. But, knowing that he, himself wrote this gem....absolutely as good as Clark's version.

Well he's saying he lived a full life when he was young, he played the game, never thinking of the future and now he can't do the things he did when he was young. Not sad. Realistic.

*Hier encore, j'avais vingt ans...* (Just yesterday, I was twenty's) is the original title. I prefer the French lyrics, which are much more hard-hitting and bitter. *My way* is also a French song, in fact... *Claude Francois - Comme d'habitude (1967)* ☺The French original version was never equaled (in the purest tradition of the soul songs of Otis Redding, Mavis Stapple or The Supremes of whom Claude François, the author and performer, was a fan). Find it on copilunio channel, you'll fall of your chair, sure! Find a good translation, cause the original lyrics are deeper and sadder than the American transposition.
