I wonder if these are the women of the Bible God says her kiss is sweet til it hits the belly turns bitter.

I'm not sure the poet understands what true beauty is. Beauty is a gift from God. It's His beauty that makes everything else beautiful. So maybe the poet is confusing true beauty with something else. Or maybe his experience with what he thought was beauty in the past, was not actually beauty at all. Anything that causes the wrestling - the confusion - the turmoil and fear that I feel in this poem can't be true beauty. I think the poet is saying that the beauty he wants to be with is a risk. She could bring him joy or tear him to pieces. But if she truly is a beauty and not a counterfeit she will bless his heart and dispel his fear. James 1:17 Proverbs 10:22

While I still yet to do more research of the background of this poem, but from my perspective, the poet is not trying to convey his understanding of beauty. Rather, I think, he tried to capture the ironic, crooked perception of beauty within our very society. Which is why I think the poem is really beautiful, as it still relevant and relatable up until now.

I think the poet understands beauty at a deeper level than most. Imagine you're locked in a prison cell with no view of the sky, or ocean, and no contact with a person you fell in love with. The beauty of the sky, the ocean, and the person you are in love with becomes hell for you, because you know it exists, you long for it, but can't have it. It's that longing for something beautiful that you can't have and can't experience, that what he means when he says "Beauty, you walk on corpses, mocking them, horror as charming as your other gems". I think this poem is brilliantly insightful
