Charles Blow calls for ‘reverse’ Great Migration for Black Americans to increase political capital

In his new HBO documentary “South to Black Power,” author and journalist Charles Blow argues that the way for Black Americans to achieve more political power in this country is to continue and expand a trend of moving to Southern states that already have large populations of Black people. As someone who moved to the South and became an elected official, State Rep. Justin Jones (D-TN) shares his perspective, discovering “state houses are the front lines of democracy.”

Thank you 🙏🏾. The Blk Median household income rate in NC was 34k pre Covid. The national poverty threshold is set at 22k and we know that’s too low . But be that as it may. Now , why would I move to North Carolina only to experience worst conditions than I’m experiencing in Oakland?? If you want to change this system, how about we stop being suckas trapped in the Democratic Party and Republican Party. And why would I move to Atlanta wear there building a “cop city” when we are already having trouble just dealing with police departments? And don’t forget cop city is approved by black leadership. They crazy😜

Georgia and North Carolina have big big potential for demographics to shift the balance of power. I watched it. he does not mention the fatherlessness crisis 1 time. DIdn't mention the rampant murder 1 time. Didn't mention the destructive culture of the inner city 1 time. 67% of black children in 2023 grow up without a father. Is that not a driving issue of black issues? Black people make up 14% of the population, and commit 56% of the murders annually in the USA. Is that not a problem? Why are blacks killing each other at record high rates? Why are black kids doing worse in school today, with more funding and progressive reform than ever? Maybe they are growing up in a broken home with a single mom, and that lowers their chances of being successful in general? He should have focused more on the work of the great black thinker Thomas Sowell, who delve into the problems plaguing the black community today that have their roots in progressive liberal policies. Check out his book "Black rednecks and white liberals".

What about the part where he talks about the impacts of violent rap music on culture in the black community, where 67% of kids are raised without a father? Did you like the part where he talked about the single parenthood rate among blacks, and how it increased as racial equality increased, and as welfare programs from white liberals 'helped' the blacks? What about the part where he talks about how blacks commit 56% of the murder? Did he talk about the massive crime gangs and organized retail theft in cities? Did he talk about the knockout game being done almost exclusively by blacks? Did he talk about how BLM heads misused donations to enrich themselves? We all disadvantaged now. Our generation has gotten comfortable and no longer willing to fight for our freedom like the generations before, that actually paid with their lives. If there is need for jobs, loans, insurance, and affordable housing let’s work to built them for ourselves because it will finally be a system build for us by us and we finally have economic lobbying power to push through our agenda on a national level so we can have then things we deserve like reparation to build our community. Until there is a another Black Wall Street we will never get reparations nor do we deserve to received reparations before we can achieve this a people because otherwise all the reparations do immediately back to White economic without Black city/ or Black business to invest the reparations in that we receive because only a fraction of us would take the money and invest in a Africa nation which will benefit us the most above all else as a people.

@@ebonydavis1754 I agree with all but two things. We deserve reparations now and back then. There is no waiting for us to be dressed properly when some can't even afford to go to school, to pay for a school lunch, higher education. Our families suffered from slavery and never received compensation for that work. We are at a full disadvantage period. This money is owed to those generations period. We should not be divided in our own country, but I see why it might be necessary to make united deals. Corruption is a huge concern like all others, and our standards should be above what has allowed corruption to happen in the open market. A separation of risky investment from longevity funds should be clear and held with the highest stipulations. It cannot be business as usual, because that is not acceptable. Transparency. If we have proper safeguards, the world will come to invest. But of course you know what will happen again...when some cannot control things. The greedy will be greedy.

Even if 100% of those 32.7 million people voted the same way, we COULD potentially be outvoted by a small percentage of whites. The only thing that makes sense is to consolidate the area of our votes to make the majority in a certain area.

I have read the book and watched the documentary the other day. The book is so much better and more in depth. One difference is the book really kinda points out how all other efforts are futile. There is nothing we are really going to do on a federal level that would really help blacks move closer to whites other than reparations itself. Much of the US is about geography. Even if you look at other groups who have increased their power base like the Cubans in FL or Somali's in MN or Muslims in MI. Their power is multiplied due to proximity. If the name of the game is states rights then you need to get some states. Either come all the way together or fully disperse all the way. STaying together in small ghetto pockets is suicide.

True- it is easier to do on the state level. An interesting tidbit is just as Blacks have returned to the South, it has also attracted whites from the North who like the South's more dynamic and stronger economies as well as Latinos who fill the entry level jobs. Heck North Carolina is now 11% Latino compared to 20% Black; and Virginia is 11% Latino compared to 18% Black. It will be difficult to reach a Black majority although both state will likely be majority-minority within a decade. Blacks could leverage their vote like the Cubans do in Florida if they would be willing to vote together and not blindly follow one party.

Dems will just dilute Southern cities with immigrants anyway, who aren’t allied with us. Dr Claude Anderson warned us in the 90s. ✡️ & 🏳️‍🌈 have 50x our political power at 1/5 of our population. They focused on economic influence, not population. One man worth $10B will have more political influence in his state, than half its population. AIPAC ✡️ is a prime example of the power of money in politics. Buying politicians is how you gain power in this society. Voting as a means to aggregate power is a mirage in the desert. It’s no longer viable as the primary tactic, it’s just a part of the puzzle. Church leaders and talking heads on cable news feed that mess to Black folks. Voting is a quick, easy fix, like people who play lotto tickets to get rich. It’s easier to vote Democrat down the line, than donate to politicians, research their platform, apply collective pressure and be willing to buy a political of either party . The right wing politicians 40-50 years ago weren’t supporting 🏳️‍🌈 or ✡️, but they will vote for their agendas, because they’ve been bought off. The DNC and RNC vets and selects who’s put on the menu anyway, except local races. So you’ll just be choosing sellouts like Stacey Abrams versus Brandon Johnson. Politically we’ve become like the dog chasing its tail over all the backyard.

@@dsldarklordspaniard6672 do black people not live in every state? You are making an argument using % of black people in a state, while I am talking about % of the black population distribution. There are appoximately 5million black people living in the west, 7million black people living in the Northeast, 8million black people living in the Midwest, and 26million living in the south as opposed to all 43million living in one region - THAT is what I meant by spread over a large area, the whole country is definitely a large area. The percentage of the state population would not indicate concentration of that population. You argue that the policies have broken down the black community and then directly contradict yourself by challenging that anything racist has gone on. The single parenthood rate can be directly related to government policies. Less than 40% of violent crimes are solved every year so black people cant be responsible for 56% if you don’t even solve that much - common myth perpetrated by racists who can’t do statistics. Consolidating power equals community and influence and therefore change. Black people did better off when they were segregated. The rest of your comment doesn’t have anything to do with what I said, so I’ll just assume you’re talking to yourself.

Black Americans migrated to urban centers in America in the North. Black Americans ARE often in charge of these cities. However, when they get in charge of these cities (Chicago, New York, Atlanta, etc.) they no longer give a flip about other Black Americans or really any Americans unless they are the Democratic Party elite. You don't need to leave your current location to do the same thing in another state. The Black Americans who are leaving these urban centers aren't leaving for the reason Charles has in mind (more political power WITHIN the Democratic party structure that currently ignores us). They are leaving because big city pensions go further in rural America and they want less crime and more space for a good price. People like Charles Blow are literally blue-blooded. Not cold-blooded, hot-blooded, red-blooded, just Democratic blue-blooded. There are no thoughts independent of the Democratic party. Good grief! May God bless the baby boomers because the Democratic party is toast when we lose them, and Democratic elites are left face-to-face with generations who lack the loyalty of the past and know only the betrayal of the current democratic party (no relief for Americans but PLENTY for the citizens of OTHER countries...poop in the streets, unless the leader from ANOTHER country comes to visit, veterans kicked out of shelters, etc).

Let's spread out down south, so they'll have more places to ignore us from, isn't helpful. They are in power in Chicago. They're currently tied up helping the citizens of other countries. Why? is using the word "Blacks" a pejorative term? I consider calling Americans of any skin colour anything other than Americans to be a pejorative term. Calling Americans with a non-white skin African Americans or Asian Americans or whatever else there is to label them as 'not really, really American', is imo bad. Skin colour does not determine an American's nationality, his/her passport, place of birth, do. So, if I have to mention a person's skin colour, which I try to avoid because in all situations except in this one and a couple of others, skin colour is irrelevant, I will refer to them as either non-white or if, as in this case, we are talking about a specific group of people, then I will use the term "Black". Is calling people "White" a bad thing, in your opinion? personally, it blows my mind that skin colour is still being taken into consideration in anything, but here we are. A bunch of white people still cling to the moronic idea that their birth colour gives them superiority. Unbelievable, but unfortunately true.

Only Maryland and Virginia have higher education of Blacks, longer life expectancy and the most accepting of Foundational Black Americans. South Carolina is beautiful but hardcore anti-Black, as are Kentucky, Mississippi & Alabama. No thanks not those states

Louisiana had Blacks making up 32% of the population, while Mississippi was 37%. The more Blacks who live in the MS suburbs of New Orleans and Memphis, TN, the closer that number will go to 50.1% so Blacks won't have to rely on their non-Black allies but can be the majority outright! Perhaps one day Mississippi will be the African-American homeland?

This is such an inspirational story. My sanctuary state of Oregon has ended reading and math proficiency standards for high school graduation in order to help our POC student community be more competitive. It's wonderful to see so many organizations preparing the next generation of doctors, scientist and other professionals with equitable solutions. This is why I vote blue. 💙💙

Looking forward to the documentary, that’s a fascinating idea. Makes me sad to think of losing diversity in some places but really folks should do what’s in their best interests, and if that’s a way to centralize power and make real change, that sounds pretty exciting.

There's so many things about the south that would have to change before a lot of us move back or consider it… Like fair wages, and the crime rate. Yes, people are still super racist where I live now, but due to the high wage and low crime it's tolerable.

A lot of black people think "blackness" is the answer. This guy said The South...deep, heavy, almost permanent, jerrymandering land South? In 2024 still? People need the Lord God Jesus Christ, not political "salvation" Jesus Christ is the way, the Truth, and the Life. Make your way to Jesus in these last days.

If the migrants spent as much time and effort fixing their own countries as they do organizing a caravan, trekking through Mexico and fighting to find a place to stay once here, then maybe they wouldn’t have to leave their home countries. Just a thought

Libertarians floated this idea by moving to Vermont. The fact is most people don’t make huge sacrifices for political movements. Imagine spending $150,000 more on a house than you otherwise would, just so your vote could possibly be more effective if others did the same.
