You can feel the pain in his voice, when you aint got shit, money is everything. It only becomes a problem when you have enough and keep trying to fill an unfillable void.

Money is valueless in itself but it's convenient so it's an illusion we all agree on because it makes trade much simpler. Well, if there weren't central banks who create money out of thin air because the owners of the system don't want to work themselves but that's a story on its own...

The only people who think money doesn’t matter in this society have never been without it or are delusional. Bukowski is a realist.

Money matters only because we've been enslaved to a system by those who print it and without it were forced to starve and die. But that's only cause the same ones who invented the system invented property rights and won't allow someone to settle their own little plot of land and work said land without.....MONEY

He’s talking about being broke more than being rich. Some of the commenters think Bukowski is praising careerism, but he’s just saying “I never want to go back to that pain,” not necessarily to become a CEO of a cigarette company etc

People can’t fathom the middle they lurch from extreme to extreme. You can impale yourself on the left side of the playing field, or you can impale yourself on the right side of the playing field. Or you can play in the field. Most choose to impale themselves. Or perhaps the 99% of non-commentators and playing in the field.

_"Money is like blood: it gives life if it flows. Money is like the Christ: it blesses you if you share it. Money is like the Buddha: if you don't work, you don't gain it. Money enlightens those who use it to open the flower of the world, and it damns those who glorify it; confounding riches with the soul."_ -Alejandro Jodorowsky, _The Dance of Reality_

There's a big difference between understanding why we need money because of the way our society is structured, and in making money the only thing you ever strive for. It's the difference between eating and not eating. We can't fundamentally change society even though it's extremely imbalanced and benefits the already wealthy.

Even if you have money, chances are you'll use it for the best your mind can think about yourself but that too depends upon how you think about your world, it doesn't mean anything to have money if you don't have any idea how to spend it, better be broke and knowledgeable than rich and illiterate.
