One of my favorite stories from Life Among the Savages. Shirley Jackson had a wonderful sense of humor.

This is one of my favorites. It almost matches the brilliance of "The Lottery." I remember something Stephen King wrote about that story in _Skeleton Crew._ He wrote that "The Lottery" has one of the most downbeat endings imaginable, but that he bet the editor who read it first walked home whistling. It's that kind of story, the kind that haunts and delights you long after you've read it. "Charles" is a story like that. I've often wondered if Ms. Jackson adapted these events from personal experience, either hers or someone else's. I don't know that much about Ms. Jackson, to tell the truth, except that she wrote _The Haunting of Hill House,_ one of the ten best horror novels of all time and definitely one of the 100 books you should read before you die. Thanks so much for uploading this, and your reading is very, very good.

Thank you. I am so glad you enjoyed it. Shirley Jacksons stories can be delightful or terrifying and she had a delicious sense of humour. She was unappreciated in her time, but there are so many writers of today that have been greatly influenced by her work. Take a trip through Shirley Jacksons world. You will be glad you did. My absolute favorite from elementary school. Except our textbook changed it from the bad word being shouted to being written on the blackboard in big letters.
