Grodin lived a good long life... died in 2021 at the age of 86. Johnny died in 2005 age 79. Johnny was born in 1925 and Grodin in 1935. It's so great they can now live on amusing countless others on the Internet. Johnny took over The Tonight Show from Jack Paar in 1962. My mom, who died in 2002 at age 74, like millions of other Americans, spent 40 years enjoying Johnny on late night TV. It really became a ritual for her. What a glorious era!!

When Johnny's job was no longer fun, he packed it in. The Tonight Show was and always will be Carson's. He could talk with a farmer, a school teacher, royalty or hollywood celebrities and it didn't matter, because people tuned in to see Johnny. His humor, wit, timing, warmth and an intelligence level rivaled every talk show host before him and since him, Johnny Carson will always be The King of Late Night Television.

Did Charles Grodin get along with Johnny Carson? Johnny Carson liked him so much that he put Grodin under contract as a guest in 1973. He would appear once a month, to the exclusion of all other talk shows. Their imitation of mutual hostility was so convincing that the programme always received letters of complaint about Grodin's shabby treatment of his host.
@DUCKSAREEVILLLLLLLL2 жыл бұрын
Carson had Grodin on 36 times because he was good TV, and that was Carson's first priority. We always looked forward to Grodin. A nervous and agitated Carson was the most honest and funny Carson. He's quicker and funnier with Grodin than he was in 1962 when he first took over The Tonight Show.

I remember in college seeing the original airing. This was really something special. These guys were doing "irony," "breaking the 4th wall," and "meta" years and years before those were things; making a mockery of the format, while still operating within it's conventions. I feel so privileged to have lived through the era when it was first being done. Now it's all water-downed self-aware braindead 'silly', and worst of all cute. (how can anyone stomach Fallon or Colbert after seeing this?) It's sad that so much mainstream tv never got better (talk shows, sitcoms). Thank god for long-form podcasts, HBO, Netflix etc.
