Long story short. He was dying not dead. Alien allies came and took him saying maybe they could heal him, but don't expect him back. So they went on like he's dead

5:38 Not exactly. In the original series, Gareth attack Professor X, and he was dying. The empire tool him because they had the technology to heal him. However, the empress informs the X-Men that it may take a long time for him to heal. Since they didn't have contact for so long, they assumed he was dead.

This and XMen the animated series from ‘92 stick pretty close the comic books.

You need to watch Xmen 92 to understand where Charles has been and why he is there. And also know the back story of their relationship.
