The Master of sound! I am so amazed how he manipulates those tones out of his sax! I can listen to his “Live at Monterey-Sunrise Sunset” album, and never grow tired of his playing. Long may he reign!

I havn't listened to Lloyd since the days of Keith Jarrett etc. He was on tenor back then. I believe Michel Petrucciani got him playing again around 81 and they made some records (which I must check out) Nice to hear the alto

When Jason Moran starts using the damper pedal the mellowed tone makes his playing sound like it’s trying to break free from the piano! With a quick release of the pedal his bright percussive tone slices through the air

This is superb! A saxophone player myself, I have never felt comfy with theory. I feel it is a form of dyslexia with me. I couldn't comprehend maths as a child at school - when I became interested in music, I found conventional study too 'mathematical'. Actually became very depressed for a while as I wanted to grow but could not read dots or understand the theory. I had to 'feel' the music. It was the only way for me. Of course it only takes you so far, but what you DO produce is heartfelt and sincere. And it always cooks. Always swings....
@0766578 жыл бұрын
Theory is nothing more than giving a name to the things you hear. If you have good ears theory should be just a way to organize the colors, thoughts... I love math, but I hate jazz theory as it is teached. I hate the altered scale, it kills all the fun and life of transcribing a C.Parker lick using b9 and #9, then finding out that what monk is using in that II-V is the #11 ... etc That's why theory by itself is useless. The altered scale means nothing to me, what does mean something is falling in love with how Charlie Parker puts a b9 in the beginning of his solo in My Little Suede Shoes, finding out how he phrases it...

you all are onto the right ideas, i cannot claim to know what music you've produced as it actually is but what you "play" and what you "know" are only dependent upon each other if you want them to be. even charlie parker had songs that he called "ballads", of course his definition of a ballad is far removed from what the rest of us would call it. the point i think, is to simply remember that as much inspiration as you draw from other people, it's only what "YOU" hear or what "YOU" feel that matters anyhow. what i mean is that you play, and you want to like what you play, and it's gotta be the certain way you like it. nothing about anybody else's playing is gonna change that in the end. you can emulate charlie parker but you can't be him, and as a metaphor: you can't really be anybody but yourself. you're always going to play what you want to, and hear what you want to in a certain way. the truth is that you study theory and keep playing so that you can develop yourself the way "you" want to, with intention. if you can sit down with no theory in your pocket and just work on some embouchure and strengthen your fingers and play blind, and you come out of that doing exactly what you wanted to, then you're done, that's it. you'll be satisfied sitting in your rocker for the rest of your days playing solos to the wind. most of us don't sit down and feel comfortable with that. even when you're satisfied with what you already played, then there's what's next, and what's after that. and if you want to just keep feeling it out, again totally fine, but if you want to study it, learn it, and be able to play it, and play it in the way that you hear, and play it in the way that you hear other cultures play it, and play it the way that they played it back in the 1700's just to fill out your repertoire... etc. etc. etc. etc. you're gonna need a little theory... ;) cheers mis amis
