Come hear the organ: www.olrbrooklyn.org/organ-reci...
JAV Recordings lead the effort to restore the pipe organ at Our Lady of Refuge Church in Brooklyn, NY. The restoration of this pipe organ likely might be considered a miracle, it should not have happened, the effort should have failed, but it did not! It took 6 years to raise the money to hire two of the finest organ building firms in the United States to restore the instrument. The employees at A.R. Schopp's Sons and Quimby Pipe Organs, Inc. spent hundreds of hours renewing thousands of parts of this 80 year pipe organ that was mute for years.
The truly amazing fact is, this parish is not financially wealthy today. The money came in through over 1000 donations from people who never had set foot in that church, or in Brooklyn, or in New York. This video is for them, to show them, that their money when to a good cause and WE did it!
On October 18, 2013 this Bishop of Brooklyn blessed the pipe organ and then one of the greatest organists in the world Olivier Latry played a recital before a sold out church. When was the last time you heard of an organ recital selling out?
This video was filmed by De Sales Media Group, Audio by Christoph Frommen, this video was edited and produced by Joe Vitacco of Pipe Organ Recordings www.pipe-organ-recordings.com.
For tons of great information and more recordings and videos and ton of photos of this organ restoration and for opportunities to hear this pipe organ live click here: www.olrbrooklyn.org/organ-reci...

Loved it. OK, this piece is "done to death" and I am grateful indeed to know Dr Francis Jackson (Organist emeritus, York Minster, UK) who, arguably, made this piece "famous" as a Wedding piece. Apparently the story is that Widor wrote it as a piece for funerals, and he plays it much slower! This performance is a very grandioso tempo which makes the piece quite majestic.

Organ recitals can be very exciting especially on large organs. They are certainly popular in Europe. Maybe schools in the US should be more proactive in getting children to experience them, as well as orchestral concerts, but I imagine organs are more accessible than symphony orchestras.

Have also played this piece for an organ recital but not quite from memory. It took an extreme amount of practising! I like his restful way of sitting behind the organ. Some organists are too showy, flaying their arms and hands in the air, and it takes away from the niceness of the music. May God receive the glory for the talent that this man has been given.
@Pipe-organ-recordings

+Marguerite de Jonge an organist that flays their body around while playing is not being efficient in their motion and their ability to communicate the musical idea will suffer. Most important thing about playing, make the tiniest motion possible. That is the sign of a great player.

It always seems to me that American pipe organs at tutti have a very clean and precise tone, where as some of the older European organs have that awesome growly tone that I love (I'm sure the acoustics of the grand cathedrals they are housed in play a major role in there sound), Cavaillé-Coll organs being a good example. Needless to say I love both types of organs and appreciate them for there uniqueness.
@TurtleFL

I think American instruments typically take after English organs myself. As for this one, it also owes a strong connection with theater organs, because it relies very heavily on unification. So it's much smaller than most classical instruments with the same arrangement of stops would be. That also accounts for the really heavy bass on the pedal; it doesn't take more than a few 16s and one 32' to almost overwhelm the instrument, and it lacks some tonal variety a larger and ununified instrument would have.

Much more enjoyable than some of his "improvisations" on a theme. A lot of them sound secular and more like noise. That's not what these instruments are for. Improv has to be rough on the instrument. It is amazing that it was without sheet music.
