Note: I've seen a few people comment that Charles Martel wasn't king of the Franks, and while that is true from a formal perspective, he was the de facto leader of the Franks. The word "king" was used in older Germanic culture interchangeably with "leader" (e.g. Norway had many "konungar" at one point), so that's the essence I'm striving for here. Slightly later Anglo-Saxon translators of the Latin term "dux Francorum" also translated it as "Froncna cyning" (king of the Franks), so it seems like a fairly authentic rendering in Frankish too. Anyhow, here’s another song I wrote and performed, this time in Old Franconian/late Frankish - specifically Austrasian Franconian, as that is likely the dialect that Charles Martel (literally: Charles the Hammer) would have spoken. The song is based on the famous Battle of Tours in 732, where Charles responded to Duke Otto of Aquitaine’s plea for aid against the rampaging Umayyad Caliphate that had recently conquered Spain. Charles and his Franks fought valiantly and prevented France, and likely the rest of Europe, from being conquered and converted. There isn’t a great deal of information available on Frankish and its numerous dialects. As such, there is a bit of reconstruction and artistic license taken at times. This dialect, Austrasian Franconian, was on the verge of “merging” into Old High German at the time the song is set, so elements of the language are consistent with other dialects of Old High German. I followed the pronunciation rules of the time as closely as I could, but naturally, it may not be perfect. I hope you enjoy. Please like, share and subscribe if you do! You could also support the channel by donating at buymeacoffee.com/theskaldicbard. Many thanks for your kindness and support, as always. Lyrics in description! My intention is exclusively to teach history and languages through song. I do not condone, endorse or seek to glorify violence.

I don't think he saved Europe from being conquered and converted. As far as I know, at that time the Moors from the Iberian Peninsula were out for raiding, not conquering. Although Charles Martel's victory at Tours and Poitiers was still very important as the raidings stopped and the southern border of the Frankish Empire was secured. He also tied Aquitaine closer to Francia by this victory. He also secured the power of his family, the Carolingians in the Frankish Empire. His son, Pepin the Short got rid of the last Merovingian King and himself crowned as the first King of the Carolingian dynasty. And Pepin's son was none other than Charlemagne, who became the most powerful ruler in Europe at that time

"Karl dher Hamar, frankono kuning!" gives the same badass vibes as "Harold, Godwines sunu, endenehsta cyning Engla" and "Wæs hāl, Ælfred cyning, gewieldend Dena", choruses like this really give one the urge to fight and die for a king.

I don't know if it's linguistically and historically accurate, but I think the dutch language can be more or less considered as modern day frankish.
@wilhelmseleorningcniht9410
@wilhelmseleorningcniht9410 5 ай бұрын
@@TheMangeGrain Sorta kinda. Old Frankish as a term is only used before the High German consonant shift, before German and Dutch can be distinguished. After the shift when they can be distinguished, then we start using the terms Old Dutch and Old High German The Franks lived in and spoke dialects of both Old Dutch and Old High German, thus this necessitates a 'Low Frankish' and a 'High Frankish' as both are equally Frankish sans adjective (in the case of all forms of Old Dutch and some forms of Old High German) Dutch is modern day Low Frankish, along with dialects of Limburgish and Flemish, making up the Low Franconian family. That's not even a controversial thing, that's the normal description of those languages. High Franconian meanwhile is a bit more complicated because the term Franconian has come to be used to refer to a spectrum of dialects that all bleed into each other, with some on the Upper German side (Upper German being those dialects furthest away from Low Franconian and Low Saxon dialects) having no historical connection to the Franks, although mind the only Germanic language/dialect where a term cognate to Frankish is actually still used is that of East Franconian, a dialect family of Upper German. Between those two extremes you have Western Central German (eastern central German is not considered Franconian) which is broken into Rhine Franconian on the southern/eastern portion and Moselle Franconian on the northern/western portion. Moselle Franconian directly abuts Low Franconian speaking areas, particular Ripuarian dialect like that of the city of Cologne. These central German dialects are the best bets for modern "High Frankish" if you will In this video's particular case, we're listening to a form of Old High German which you can see in for example the pronoun 'ir' (like modern German 'er,' which would have been hie or he in Old Dutch, similar to Old English) so it's actually not as similar to modern Dutch as one might think and modern Dutch certainly doesn't stem from a Frankish dialect that would have been like this.

@@TheMangeGrain No more than many other dialects in Europe, Dutch is based on Low Frankish spoken by the Salian Franks but was influenced by many other languages later and i think it's not really accurate with the exact period but it remains representative of what an ode to the glory of Charles Martel could have been in a defined area of the immense territory controlled by the Franks where obviously not everyone spoke one of the many Frankish dialects at that time. As for Charles himself, we cannot really say that he spoke Rhenish Frankish dialect even if we suppose that Charlemagne (his grand-son) spoke this language, because The Hammer was born in Andenne, an area where people spoke rather "old low frankish" dialects at that time according to my memories of classes and where the Belgians still speak French btw this song still a very good job and as we have very little information on the Frankish languages available this is honestly the best he can do at the moment.

So wonderfull to hear the language of your ancestors (at least a big part of them). I live in Austrasia (Neuss) i even got a ripuarian frankish family name. I love the Franks especially Carolingians. Very interesting to understand a lot of words but not to understand others but when you read them it makes a bit sense. Thank you for sharing.

One small correction. Charles the Hammer wasn't king of the franks, he was Mayor of the palace. He was de facto king but only his son would take the title of king officially
@SkaldBard
@SkaldBard 6 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's just the word "king" in old Germanic culture was used interchangeably with "leader", and that's what I'm going for. For example, Norway had many "konungar" at one point!

Lang leve The Skaldic Bard. Thank you very much for this song. It made me very proud being a descendant of those Frankish warriors fighting at the battle of Tours aka Battle of Poitiers in 732. I live in the southern part of Belgian Limburg, some 35 km from the city of Herstal where Karel Martel was born. I have tried to translate the lyrics into Dutch. I am truly very grateful for that. To me Karel Martel (Charles Martel) is one of the great "Belgian" heroes (born in or used to live in the area of modern-day Belgium). Through this song I finally understood what Nachbarn /neighbors means in German. Because he said Nahgibura( Near borned) nachbarn = those who born close. For a long time, Barn was also a word for children because their birth was not long ago. Today this word is only found in Nachbarn. many words are almost 1:1 like in German. Heilant =Heilant. Bruoder = Bruder. Unse= Unser . Kamf = Kampf . Abur= Aber. Selbo=Selbst. Kuning= König. Dher=Der. Willon= Wollen. Hilf=Hilf. Minan= Meinen. Bidwungan= Bezwungen. Uf= Auf. Almahtic = Allmächtig. Sendida= Sendete, Dhen= Den. Nam= Nahm. Skild= Schild. Sper= Speer. Namon= Name. Hwer= Wer. Dhaz= Dass. Lioht = Licht. In=in. Finstarnessin= Finsternis.Guotliihhin=Göttlichchen. Ist= Ist and many many more. The Franconian influence in the High German language is quite strong

It would seem that Old Frankish is the bridge and last common ancestor to the modern German and French languages. It is well clear that a lot of the phonetics and basic phrases are in "German" but the Gallocised grammer and other half of the vocabulary makes it unique Please continue good sir, your efforts bless those with knowledge of our world with the gift of God!
